#203368 Why do you hate english dub?

Posted by Azure-Edge on 03 May 2013 - 08:02 AM

Honestly, I think all the hate for English dubs is pretty stupid, and I'm both a long time anime fan and someone who knows Japanese to the point where I can almost go without subs (depending on the content of course). There was a time when a LOT of dubbing was pretty awful, mostly I'd say in the 90s when they were trying to edit a lot of anime to make it more G rated for kids. And I don't mean editing as in just changing meanings around, but as in they would actually cut up and doctor up episodes. Some shows had entire episodes that would never be shown, some had orders changed around, some were combined, etc. If you knew this was going on, it was pretty easy to hate any anime done in English. Bad voice acting was just the cherry on the cake.

Nowadays though English dubs have come a LONG way. Funimation's series have consistently put out VERY good dubs throughout the past several years and there are a lot of English voice overs that have gone on to surpass the Japanese originals. So really, I think there are a lot of people who hate on the dubs just for hating on the dubs. Now, if you just prefer the Japanese voices, then that's your thing. But to act as if most dubs are still crap is pretty shallow. Oh, and to the people who mention that there are sometimes things lost in translation, that happens regardless. You can't blame them for changing references when translating for a culture that would never understand the references in the first place. A straight copy/paste translation is NOT a good translation. In fact that is where you will have the most meaning lost. A really good translation comes when you have people who not only understand the cultural references/subtexts but also are able to figure something comparable in the language they're going to. That's a good dub job.

As for me personally, it really depends on both the show's content/context, AND the quality of the voice work. Things that are meant to take place in the west with western characters and names. Those are the ones that I DEFINITELY want to watch in English. It's not that the Japanese voice overs are bad, but it just doesn't fit well with the context, and unfortunately the Japanese butcher our language just as badly as we do theirs. I hate hearing them try to struggle to say a western name right and there are vowel sounds that shouldn't be there. It's not their fault, it's just that there are so many sounds in the English language that aren't in Japanese, so they just do their best.

Hellsing Ultimate is a perfect example. This show is not only about vampires, but it literally takes place in England and everyone in the show is European. I mean hell, they have Nazis! In Japanese, not only do I have to listen to them try to use English names and phrases accurately, but now they've thrown German in to the mix. It just pulls me out of the show. The dub on the other hand is well done. It flows better, the English fits in the context and they're even able to have accurate accents (well most). A few other notable mentions that I think are better in English would be Panty and Stocking, Fullmetal Alchemist (either one), and Code Geass. On the other hand, I think shows like Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh, and Sailor Moon are more fun in Japanese. Then there are those that I can go either way on such as Baka and Test.

#203251 Why should I buy a Wii U?

Becasue I'm some guy off the internet, and therefore the person who should be making your purchasing decisions for you.

Now go forth and buy a spicy chicken sandwich.

#203153 What do Nintendo IPs have that SONY IPs lack?

Posted by Azure-Edge on 02 May 2013 - 04:11 PM

Just get a PS4 when it comes out. You've been doing nothing but negatively criticizing the Wii U as of late. I don't understand why someone lets themselves be unhappy over something they have control over. And you'll most likely ignore my post by writing me off as a Nintendo fanboy and make another thread/comment/status about the same thing.

Maybe he's Buramu's successor.

Watching how people have been reacting to this today is just freaking hilarious.

#199156 Satoru Iwata to become the new CEO of Nintendo of America

Posted by Azure-Edge on 24 April 2013 - 07:27 AM

I just hope this means that Iwata gets a better understanding of the US gaming world. I'm not saying they should westernize, merely that when he wonders why the 3DS isn't doing as well outside of Japan, he can see that many big games haven't been localized. Perhaps the dots will connect in his head. If Nintendo systems start receiving the kind of TLC in the US like they do in Japan then I have no doubt they'll do better.

But yeah, overall this is a good thing since it will hopefully decrease the time in between things going on in Japan and here in the States.

#198684 Nintendo expected to announce second straight loss Tuesday as Wii U flops

I can see a lot of people on here who are blinded by fanboyism.

The Wii U is failing at the moment and that is a fact. You cannot just dismiss everything as "doom and gloom" and compare it to the 3DS which is completely different to the Wii U (one of the biggest factors is that it has hardly any competition in the handheld market right now).

The Wii U really has no upcoming games that are system sellers right now and if Nintendo doesn't sort things out then yes the Wii U will be in serious trouble. It isn't fair to expect everyone to just accept that "games are coming". Nintendo has made a series of bad decisions with the Wii U and now they are struggling to get games out. We shouldn't have to wait until Holiday 2013, a whole year after Wii U was released, to get some decent titles. After E3, Nintendo need to start releasing AAA games both 1st and 3rd party on a regular basis otherwise they will never sell consoles.

It's fine being optimistic, but people also need to be realistic.

That's very interesting, because all I heard the first year, and even through most of the second, of the 3DS was how doomed it was. How pointless a dedicated handheld was compared to smart phones. How the handheld market has been made irrelevant. How super amazing the Vita was going to be for sure and how it'd get all of the games because it had better tech, etc.

I get the feeling you've either never been through a console launch in your young life, or you obviously don't remember it (like pretty much every other person in this industry). First years of systems are not very interesting, nor exciting. You're lucky in your first year if you get 5+ games that are actually worth playing. And believe it or not, consoles don't exactly fly off shelves as soon as they're out either. They start out slow and gain momentum as they continue on. They get bundle deals, lower prices, larger libraries of games, etc. Value of owning consoles increases with time, but it takes time for consoles to pick up steam. You think the PS3/360 just launched with their current line ups? You want to know what the 360's killer app was when it launched? King Kong. :/

#197381 I think Nintendo should buy SEGA

Posted by Azure-Edge on 20 April 2013 - 11:11 AM

Megaman would be awesome as a Nintendo IP. ^_^

He definitely fits in with the rest of the Nintendo characters, and he'd be boss to have in SSB. Plus if he was a Nintendo IP, he'd actually get some of the TLC he needs that Capcom obviously doesn't have anymore of. We'd actually have Megaman games again.

#196498 Wii U release dates "leaked"

Posted by Azure-Edge on 18 April 2013 - 09:05 AM

Yeah....I'm going to have to call complete BS on this. The header itself is ridiculous and unprofessional, it totally gives it away. They're not going to put 'Super Secret' in green lettering and up it in size. Plus, this basically says they're blowing their entire load right there in the fall with nothing spaced out at all. Again, BS. They're going to spread their releases out more. I seriously doubt we're going to see Bayonetta 2, Smash Bros., or 'Xenoablade U' by the fall. We literally have ZERO info on any of those games. One of which hasn't even been officially introduced, and the other two have practically no gameplay footage. This is a pipe dream.

Not to mention, if this was legit they wouldn't call the X game 'Xenoblade Wii U'. They most likely know the name of the game by now and would refer to it as such.
