#235073 Wonky GamePad Magnetometer?

Posted by Arkhandar on 26 July 2013 - 03:09 PM in Wii U Hardware

There me be times where you need to re-calibrate your GamePad be turning it upwards. It could also be some sort of interference with the magnetometer, or some problem with the GamePad itself.

Be sure that you read the game instructions before playing.

#241584 Wind Waker HD Wii U Deluxe bundle leaked!

Posted by Arkhandar on 25 August 2013 - 06:26 PM in Wii U Hardware

Let me. Get this straight. Nintendo is trying to boost sales by releasing an enhanced version of an 11 year old game running on an enhanced version of a 13 year old processor. ..1 month before the PS4 releases.

This is good?

Yes.

#258302 Will TVii ever come to Europe?

Posted by Arkhandar on 29 November 2013 - 05:27 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Forget it. If the console continues selling like the past 8 months in Europe, TVii is as good as dead.

Hopefully things can be worked out in the EU to make TVii worthwhile, really I don't use the service all that much however I have been playing with it more recently. It's useful if you utilize streaming services along side your cable. Searching is nice and the app itself does contain some nice features to make consuming media more streamlined.

One thing that I never understood well about TVii was, when you select "watch on Netflix" for example, do you need to close a suspended game or does it play the show/movie without closing it?

#256713 Will the Wii U survive next-gen

Posted by Arkhandar on 17 November 2013 - 03:49 PM in Wii U Hardware

i was actually hoping for a fight response just so i can fight for the heck of it.

I was actually hoping Nintendo would put up a fight against Sony, but I guess they'll just let them have all of their sales.

#243240 Will be new to the wiiu family

Posted by Arkhandar on 31 August 2013 - 08:10 AM in Wii U Hardware

There's also great family-friendly games such as Nintendo Land, Wii Party U and possibly Game & Wario (if you're into the style of WarioWare).

The eShop also has great content including Trine 2, Runner 2 and Toki Tori 2.

#258301 WiiU browser screenshot thread. ****SPOILERS WITHIN****

Posted by Arkhandar on 29 November 2013 - 05:23 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Daycare center is probably the most scary areas in all of games, in my opinion... just because it's a daycare.

I didn't like it (too much cliché), aside from the basement section. The bunker was way more scarier imo.

Is it possible to take screenshots from the Wii U Menu? I'm trying to save some to put on Wikipedia, but it doesn't seem possible. Can any of you do it?

#258953 Wii U, The Worst Holiday Gift This Season.

Posted by Arkhandar on 04 December 2013 - 07:58 AM in Wii U Hardware

Do ports count? cause I'm pretty sure some ports made money

Probably enough to break even and give a little bit of profit.

One thing that is completely unforgettable is the fact that Ubisoft won't make a second Zombi U because the first one was "not even close" to turning a profit. It's their fault that the game was in development for 4 years and roughly suffered 3 reboots or something. Selling 500.000 units as a launch title is pretty successful imo. What were they expecting, 3 million?

#258722 Wii U, The Worst Holiday Gift This Season.

Posted by Arkhandar on 03 December 2013 - 07:02 AM in Wii U Hardware

Seriously?  I'm quite happy to have a Wii U and PS4.  I can't see any good reason right now to have an Xbox One though, just not interested in the exclusives.

Sure I still feel I was ripped off at launch price for the Premium, but I do not regret owning one.  Even Eurogamer had an article suggesting that the Wii U is the next-gen console to buy this holiday.  I'm not sure I agree if I had to choose, but I don't think its doom and gloom for Nintendo either.  Although it is pretty embarrassing that the PS4 sold more consoles over the weekend than the Wii U did in a whole year, in the UK.  But Nintendo hasn't been about quantity for years now, its about quality and profitability - things Nintendo excel it.

Who really cares if the Wii U never sells that well, as long as Nintendo and any developers who support the platform are able to make a profit?  There is too much focus on the wrong side of the numbers.  For all their popularity, Sony and Microsoft continue to lose a ton of money on their console businesses and Nintendo has not.  So who exactly is a winner there?

Aside from Nintendo Land, NSMB U and Nintendo eShop games, I doubt any game made a profit yet.

#248339 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 27 September 2013 - 01:23 PM in Wii U Hardware

Why do you need source, if you own a Wii U then you should have experienced that hands on... Many people noted that games load faster and ran better.

I'm sorry, I call that fanboy BS. I own a Wii U since day one and I can confirm that that's just wishful thinking.

#248267 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 27 September 2013 - 05:35 AM in Wii U Hardware

Do you honestly believe that Nintendo would rather pay for an extra gig of ran than a better flash storage unit? It's just an utter lack of optimization.
Iwata himself admited in the Wii U Iwata Asks that once they had developed all these Wii U services, they had a really a bad time sticking everything together into the OS. That not only translated into an horrible UI, but also resulted in wasted hardware resources, which is probably the case with the internal memory speeds and the 1GB of RAM allocated to the OS.

Eye_Of-Core, on 27 Sept 2013 - 12:06 PM, said: OS is most likely the problem, do you seriously think that Wii U's OS is not the problem I mean when it was updated then games were less laggy and had less frame drops and more stable frame rate.

Source?

#248207 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 26 September 2013 - 03:25 PM in Wii U Hardware

Like I said before, name one console that has EVER had a CPU clock increase via a firmware update other than a portable (which wasn't overclocked, it was actually UNDERclocked in the first place to save battery power).

The Xbox One had its clock speed increased from the "theoretical" specifications, not overclocked, because it wasn't finalised yet.  You test what its safe to clock at once you have final silicon.  If Nintendo WERE able to suddenly bump up the clock rate it would suggest they didn't do that testing before launching the console, which is very VERY unlikely, it will be clocked as high as they considered safe for reliability and that's it.

Its not like we even know how hot it could potentially run at when executing a fully optimised game, because no developer has maxed it out yet.  Plus, you can't judge how hot the cores are running at based on the outside of the case or the heat coming out of it, as that depends on how much the case in insulated and how efficient the heatsink is.  The heat coming out of my PC doesn't seem that hot, but the CPU cores are still actually running at only 10C short of the rated maximum when fully loaded.  With such a tightly integrated chip as the Wii U, it could very well be that say the embedded RAM is already running at close to its maximum temperature and the CPU cores not, but overclocking the CPU would overclock the RAM too pushing it over the limit.  Its just not that simple.  The reason you can on PCs is because they ARE clocked down from their maximum potential, to fit a specific price bracket, consoles are not - they are pushed as close to the limit as practical because its more cost effective to do that.  The Xbox 360 being a prime example of where they actually pushed TOO hard and long term reliability of the console suffered.

I still firmly believe the biggest issue with the Wii U is its hobbled by only having the optical drive to pull data from, so open world games have high latency when streaming in data.  That and the internal memory is clearly carp (hence the frame drops for downloaded games and slower download speed over an external HDD/memory stick).  Neither of those things can be fixed now, the design is final.

Just one correction there. The internal memory is far from being carp. That's just how flash memory works: very low write speeds and moderate read speeds.

#248726 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 30 September 2013 - 06:16 AM in Wii U Hardware

When I said I'd hate it because I don't use my TV to play wii u games, it was in reference to the notifications being shown only on the tv screen.
And if they showed on the upad it'd be stupid as you'd see it twice if the game was something like zombiu.

A little Off-topic here, but this is where Nintendo failed. This is just an example (summing up to the 3DS/WiiU Virtual Console disaster), but they failed to deliver a decent ecosystem where something as simple as Off-TV Play doesn't even offer you a streamlined ON and OFF switch.

If in the future Nintendo wants to implement features that are Off-TV Play dependent like the example you just gave, where "it'd be stupid as you'd see [the notification] twice", they're screwed because there's no way the system can tell if a game is being played on the TV+GamePad or GamePad only.

Only now with the release of TW101 and Pikmin 3 this is starting to get fixed. In these 2 games you activate Off-TV Play using the minus (-) button. Perfect. And TW101 even goes a step further allowing you to optionally emulate the GamePad's screen on the TV. Why the hell wasn't this available since the system's launch, for every single game that uses Off-TV Play?

And don't get me started on the information available on retail boxes. They're so full of carp that you can't even correctly tell what goddamn controllers you can use with the game. And you're looking at someone that's been gaming for years now. Imagine what a 3-year-old kid whose parents  don't give a carp to what their kids buy would think?

Oh you, messy messy messy Nintendo.

#243423 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 01 September 2013 - 08:29 AM in Wii U Hardware

The reason for this is the price. I got Assassin's Creed 3 for 18$ a few weeks ago. The Eshop version costs 98$(!) So in order to cut down on loading times and noise, as well as wear and tear on the disc drive and, I would have liked to install it unto the USB memory. I consider this a standard feature, since the Xbox 360 (which is 8 years old now) has had it for years.

The average read speed for USB 2.0 disc drive drive is about 28 MB/s and the Wii U's disc drive is 22.5 MB/S. I don't think loading times would be substantially dropped with this setting. Xbox 360 is a different case because its HDD is connected through SATA, not USB 2.0.

#248182 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 26 September 2013 - 02:19 PM in Wii U Hardware

It seems that Wii U's OS is not perfected yet, games downloaded digitally suffer from frame drops and I can only point out to the OS and September/October update could be major patch for OS. I was searching the internet for more information on Wii U's GPU and I found this;

http://www.ign.com/b...775697/page-199

So couple of guys at IGN forums did some research, had some findings and speculated... So guys at Beyond 3D that say Wii U's GPU is 176Gflops are way off, guys at NeoGAF had a rough estimate based on amount of SPU's that it has 352Gflops and guys at IGN forum considered if some things are cut and if it is based around Radeon HD 6000 series that it could have 500 to 600 Gflops performance of 2x Xbox 360 or 3x PlayStation 3 GPU performance.

FLOP comparisons are useless unless you're also putting other variables into the equation. And 500 to 600 GFLOPS... please.

The Wii U is no powerhouse (neither is the Xbox One nor PS4, no matter how much EA wants you to believe it). The Wii U is a system based on experience, not pretty graphics. If you want a real powerhouse buy a PC.

#248715 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 30 September 2013 - 05:28 AM in Wii U Hardware

A lot of people would hate that.
I'd hate it because I don't usually use my TV with my Wii U.
If It's unobtrusive, I'd be okay. Even Steam notifications annoy the hell out of me sometimes.
Something like colour-coding the little LED instead of just having it flash for everything, I'd love that. Like the 3DS.

Like I said in the "Accomplishments" discussion, it's the choice that matters here. Being able to choose something to fit your own personal preferences is a big part of what makes a great user experience, especially when we're talking about video game consoles that are not simply video game consoles anymore.

You want accomplishments? Sure you can have that. You want on-screen notifications? Well, why not? Want to customize the UI? Go ahead.

As long as it is optional (and that's the magic word here) it shouldn't make anyone mad.

*Color coding has its limitations. Some of us can't see them all. And unlike on the 3DS, I'm not looking at the GamePad all the time.*

Seriously what are the expectations with this update? Not what u guys want but rather what Nintendo will do? Or is it that hardcore that no one has any clue?

The only confirmation that we have is that the update will speed up the OS. Other than that, we're in the dark.

Nollog, on 30 Sept 2013 - 6:02 PM, said:The game can tell. If the OS really does run on 1GB of RAM and the game runs on the other then it should be able to read the hooks pretty easily.

No, it can't. There is no universal Off-TV Play feature, only a couple of games that support it with different settings and lines of code.

It's all flowers and roses when you offer complete freedom to developers. Or is it? Remember what happened to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection?

#248482 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 28 September 2013 - 12:59 PM in Wii U Hardware

as much as the last one did to speed things up, it made very little difference i do not hold much hope for this update either, it's been out nearly a year & they are still trying to get the OS up to a speed that can be used without frustration, this should of been done & sorted before the WiiU was launched, there is no excuse for it being so slow, no reason at all other than Nintendo don't know what they were/are doing.

will there be a update on the loading times on games as well, also 3DS integration & games tied to gamertags/accounts & not the hardware in with this update as well ?

Game loading times would need to be fixed with a patch on a game by game basis. 3DS integration, like what? Games are already tied to your NNID, but only on one console at a time.

#248015 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 25 September 2013 - 03:21 PM in Wii U Hardware

It seems you two guys are in denial, are you pretendos?

DS and 3DS had locked hardware features and later when it was unlocked, either games and OS performed better. Wii U at maximum consumes 40 watts while PSU is 75 watts so they have head room to increase clocks, specially clocks of the GPU. We know that Wii U's OS was kinda wonky and now it is okay, so Wii U could be rushed and if that is the case then maybe some features were not been usable and stable because of OS.

I'm sorry, but you're the one in denial.

Look, I have a Wii U and I like it. Of course, there are some (major) things that need to be addressed but what you're suggesting isn't going to happen.

Iwata himself clarified that the although the PSU is rated at 75 watts, the Wii U is only going to receive a maximum of 45 watts, because that's how PSU's work. That's it. It's a well balanced system, already working on its max on the hardware level.

Now on the software level, OS optimization wouldn't really give anything special in extra performance, believe me. Optimizations needs to be done by developers on a game by game basis, not in the OS. That's already optimized, even though what you see (the UI) is still slow as carp.

PS: DS didn't have any locked power, and Nintendo only gave developers the option to disable Wi-Fi to get more power from the CPU. No locked hardware features. Sorry.

#248501 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 28 September 2013 - 03:27 PM in Wii U Hardware

I hate to be hard on Nintendo but I am pretty frustrated by it as well, especially the time it takes to go back and forth from Miiverse to a game.  Why are things so slow when the system has 4x as much total RAM as the Xbox 360/PS3?  Didn't they only have 512 mb??

You bet. But don't worry, that will hopefully be fixed soon enough.

Xbox 360 only reserved 32 MB for the OS during games, so the Wii U... well, it doesn't even deserved to be compared with it.

#243239 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Yes, I've had the most recent firmware for months and the problem is still there. How can you install retail discs onto the USB/HDD? I haven't seen that anywhere.

Oh, I thought you meant installing eShop digital titles onto the HDD. Why would you want to install retail discs onto the HDD, if you bought the retail copy in the first place?

#248347 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 27 September 2013 - 02:07 PM in Wii U Hardware

I am sorry that I can't stop you from going full r*****, if that was wishful thinking then there would not be droves of people of forums claiming that after OS update that their games had no stuttering and/or frame drops eg more consistent frames. You most likely did not noticed, you are probably only a few or never owned couple of games like that had issues with frame rate and got resolved after OS update.

Game performance can be affected by OS, don't be in denial you tech illiterates.

Like Goodtwin said, the OS during games is really just a kernel. Either the was a complete a disaster before the update (which is definitely not true) or the "more consistent frames" are just wishful thinking. I'm sorry, but that's the truth.

I own both Zombi U and AC, which were both "reported" to have better frame rates after the update. Did you know what I noticed after the update? Nothing. And believe when I say I have a good eye for these things. I'm more of an "fps whore" rather than a "graphics whore", per se.

Just one last thing. Insulting other writers isn't going to make it true.

#248422 Wii U Summer/Fall Update

Posted by Arkhandar on 28 September 2013 - 03:37 AM in Wii U Hardware

I really don't give a sonic rainboom about all of this perceived performance issues/improvements. What I want to now about the next update is this:

When exactly is it coming out? Can we nail it down to a week?

What are the noticeable improvements? (User interface changes, account and file management changes, unanimously agreed-on performance improvements, etc)

Don't worry, it's coming. And surprise! It wasn't delayed (again).

Nintendo announced that there will be extended Nintendo Network server maintenance from September 30 to October 1. This means, you guessed it, the update will arrive between October 2 and 4. Yay!

http://www.nintendo....work_status.jsp

Emily Rogers also confirmed this in her twitter account saying that the "Wii U firmware update is sooner than you think".

https://twitter.com/Emi1yRogers

Now, this updated will obviously bring performance improvements, but that's just for the OS and system apps such as Miiverse, Nintendo eShop, etc. It won't affect game performance whatsoever, just as previous updates never did. So, don't get your hopes up for anything "earth-shattering". We're getting exactly what we were promised back in January.
