#281749 What are your expectations for the new Legend Of Zelda game?

Posted by 3Dude on 17 April 2014 - 03:31 PM in Wii U Games and Software

graphics/artstyle: Whatever Nintendo wants.

Main request: Level 4 open world, no forced step by step handholding ruining all discovery. I want to be surprised again when i actually FIND a dungeon.

Towns. Worthwhile towns, with more than an impossibly tiny/obviously inbred number of inhabitants.

New and well thought out items and powerups, including optionals that are rewards for exploration/sidequests BEYOND just another damn heart peice.

Hope you silly patent trolls have patents that predate 1986. Or you are going to get wrecked, counter sued, go out of business, and end up giving your entire patent portfolio to nintendo out of default... Just like the LAST patent troll morons to try the two screens grab.

2yuBuBI.jpg

It clearly states that CryEngine 3 is working in DX11 32bit mode. Any chance that there is something we don't know about Wii U's GPU?

There is a lot we dont know about the gpu. But this has nothing to do with it.

This is nothing more than the result of mass confusion and ignorance created by the gaming media's and modern 'developers' stupidity, ignorance, and ultimate misinformation. So much misinformation. So many people who think the games media and bottom ringers on third hand c teams are standbup and are telling facts, when in reality, all they are doing is committing a load of bs to memory and their beliefs.

There are so many things to this that need to be known to form a whole picture im not sure where to start....

That is not the wii u the game is being run on Its a software development kit, yes, it is a wii u sdk, but its still basically a pc, just with certain specifications. When the game is run on the wii u it wont be done with direct x. Because nintendo would never pay ms to license it (unlike these developers big red button, who have). Thats all it means.

DX11, or more specifically direct 3d 11, is not magic. It is nothing more than a collection of effects and other conveniences wrapped up in a package. Its being used for convenience, that is all it is. MS employees write effects and optimizations for other people to use so they dont have to write their own.

Unfortunately, just because you know how to use the effects provided by ms in dx, does NOT mean you know how to write them from scratch. If you cant program your own shaders, you have no hope of actually porting a dx title to something not dx... And the ever increasing presence of direct x, and dwindling presence of open gl means developers who actually know how to write effects from the ground up, instead of simply calling upon a routine pre provided by a microsoft software engineer, are being reduced to an ever smaller, ever older population.

These 'developers' who are constantly claiming wii u cant handle their dx whatever projects are actually just too stupid to figure out how to write the effects from dx they want to use, in open gl, and so when nintendo's barebones gx2 library first arrived, and they saw no effects of type whatever, they claimed it was underpowered and couldnt be done.

There is absolutely no effect in dx11 or dx whatever, that cant be done on ANY programmable shader gpu of reasonable power and modern feature set.

Sonic Boom will not be running on dx11 on wii u. That is simply a convenience for the dev team. They will export those assets and effects to the custom wii u gx2 based cryengine 3, where they will run on custom written equivilents big red button wrote, just like how they wrote a split screen engine to be added.

Being able to use dx11 on the devkit just means one part of the team can continue making the actual game, while the others add custom applications to the library that will transfer the dx11 effects to their gx2 equivilents.

#282104 whats the advantage of a gpu with high bandwith

Posted by 3Dude on 21 April 2014 - 01:53 AM in Wii U Hardware

@3Dude: I thought about feature set. I know DX is microsoft api and microsoft is the only company that can use it, so no dx for ether Sony or Nintendo, but if feature set of Wii U GPU is same as DX11, than there is something new that we didnt know. Till now, everyone were talking about feature set equivalent to DX10.1. I know there are not many differences between the two, but Wii U's GPU can be more modern in design than we thought.

Thats because those people are too damn stupid to realize (Or they are people who placed their trust in these people, assuming they were competent and knew what they were talking about) that effects written at a certain point in time for a certain version of dx 99% have nothing to do with actual hardware, you LITERALLY have to find a REAL revolutionary leap, like the introduction of gpu's, or the switch to programmable shaders, to REALLY need new hardware (and not just more resources), despite what marketing teams desperately want them to think.

ANY PROGRAMMABLE SHADER GPU can do ANY EFFECT provided it has the resources. Its PROGRAMMABLE.

This narrative thats been scripted by marketing dept. of newly written effects only working on the months most recent processor only makes sense in the context of fixed function gpu's, where what effect the gpu can perform is determined when it is manufactured, like the gamecube and wii. Which, aside from the wii, have all dissapeared the way of the dinosaur many years ago.

#282113 Do you blame the success of smartphones/iphones for the decline in console title

Posted by 3Dude on 21 April 2014 - 03:31 AM in General Gaming

No. These people have NEVER been the target audience for deep console games.

Smart phones are nothing new. We used to play similar games all the time for 25 cents a pop. Then home consoles with deeper more engaging experiences took our attention, and we when we left the arcades, we stuck with home consoles. And then when the casuals and fad chasers (The always present market for simplistic arcadey games now making mobile gaming successful) left the arcade scene and they died.

Now simple arcade action is just as cheap, and infinitely more convenient. There has always been a market for simple arcade action at impulse prices, the biggest barrier, inconvenience, has been nuked. Anyone who has a phone, as in everyone, has instant access.

That still has nothing to do with console gamers.

So no, the blame doesnt have anything to do with smart phones, or their games, regaurdless of how crappy they are (there were a LOOOOOT of crappy arcade games).

It has to do with the blind greedy, moronic non gaming, ignorant, clueless marketing background ceo's of major publishing seeing a bunch of people spending stupid money on stupid games, and wanted to quadruple rape the console gamers by making them jump through all the bs they could find and monetizing out the wazoo to do it.

Because, 'games are just games right? If one person who plays one kind of game will pay for it. Than anyone who plays any kind of game will pay for it, because games are games, they are all the same anyway right?'

The blame rests ENTIRELY on AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA publishers who engage in these acts, who, coincidentally (Not really a coincidence), are the ones who have turned their games to complete rainbowe.

And whats REALLY sad, is people who werent around before, they think THIS IS HOW GAMING HAS ALWAYS BEEN. They think that the crappy repetitive nature of the current industry is how its always been, and think 'No wonder, people are just getting tired of gaming'.

But thats not the case. Gaming did not become this repetitive crapfest until a under a decade ago. There were new and engaging experiences, with new, different and interesting ways to play coming out all the time, until corporate asswipes decided they would only focus on making 3 kinds of games with nothing but cosmetic variations.

But people seriously believe this is how its always been. They believe 'thats just what gaming is'. They have been failed horribly. Its not fair, and its not right. But its still true. Just look at Auzzie Wingmans post.

Yes, Auzzie, I still gasm at every great NEW game experience I play. They just arent made NEARLY as much as they used to thanks to the corporate asswipimization of the industry.

Metal gear rising was a blast, vanquish was amazing, The wonderful 101's gameplay was mind blowing when it clicked. Xenoblade was absolutely fantastic. Dragons dogma was delicious.

The reason we dont 'gasm' over every game anymore, is because for 99% of the industry, they only make the same damn 3 kinds of games over and over and over again, with simply a different story, and a different coat of paint, because its cost effective. Its because gaming has gotten much, much, much worse, not because its 'worn off'.

dragomix, on 21 Apr 2014 - 2:53 PM, said:
What about more modern shader design? All the other advantages that came with DX11 GPU's?

Modern shader design is more effecient. thats literally all we got going. We are skimming the bottom of the well until we hit another huge breakthrough.

The wii u (it looks almost certain right now) uses very long instruction word 5, or vliw5. WHat this means, is that each simd 'unti' or 'shader' as it is called, is comprised of 5 alu's.

VLIW5.png

Well, this turned out to be an effecient use of space, but an ineffecient use of the shaders. Because of things like dependencies (problems that require a variable that hasnt been calculated yet), or cache misses, it would turn out that on average, only 3 or 4 of the 5 units would actually be able work, while the others just sat there, not doing anything. Literally 2-3/5ths of your shaders not even doing anything!

So they switched to arranging their blocks in units of 4 instead. That was called vliw4.
VLIW4.png
Now, on average, 3-4 of these will work (for the same reasons as stated above), and only the occasional odd man out is left not doing anything. so, now you have 3/4's of your shaders working (with the occasional 2/4 or ugh, 1/4 working). So, even by having the same exact number of shaders, and the same exact resources, you get a 25% increase in performance.

Heres a diagram showing how ineffecient vliw shaders can be if used sloppily. This is vliw4, if it was 5, youd have even more unused shaders. Actually, before that, I need to post a diagram of the wavefronts, and how they are dependent on each others results.

Demo-Wavefront-Queue.jpg

Okay, now we feed the wavefronts into the vliw4.

VLIW4-dependency-handling.jpg
Now remember, you can add one more unused unit to each of those if this was vliw5... (Which is why they got rid of it, it made no sense to organize that way when almost half the damn things never got used!)

While this is nice, it still literally has no effect whatsoever on what effects these gpu's can do. Its just one has more performance than the other.

Now we have 'GCN' or graphics core next, or the incredibly non descriptive, ridiculously marketing named architecture modern gpu's, as well as ps4 and xbone are using.

Despite its horrible, horrible gimmick name, its a pretty good job.

Using those same wavefronts, we feed it into a gcn architecture.

Compute-unit-dependency-handling.jpg
Well, gcn has a compute unit, that can ORGANIZE wavefronts, and single out ones that would cause a stall because they are dependent on others, and put them on hold and execute other more viable wavefronts instead, that dont need to wait, and then once the needed data comes in, the wavefronts put on hold can go through. There is more to it, but this is the basic gist of the situation.

So now, we have much more effecient use of the shader units, with most of them being used all the time.

Very cool. Less shader units go a lot farther, and more shader units, even farther still.

But again, this does NOTHING WHATSOEVER TO PROVIDE EFFECTS VLIW ARCHITECTURE CAN NOT DO. There is no revolution here. There is no 3d accelerateted hardware vs... Not. THere is no programmable shader vs matrox fixed function. Its just more effecient. They can do the same things, so its not a matter of can it do this effect, its a matter of, how many can it do at once?

Now, I dont know what the heck is REALLY going on in wii u's gpu. All signs point to using a vliw5 architecture with 128 shader units... Except... The games visuals. Mario kart 8 is mindblowing for these specs if they are true. I dont know how they are doing it, but if they are using vliw5 architecture, they must have found a way to increase effeciency. I dont know what it is. Maybe they have AMAZIBALLS prefetchers, maybe its the on the same die cpu and l3 edram cache. I dont know. But its not your run of the mill vliw5 performance. At least not what Nintendo has been showing.

That being said, the 'dx11 range gpu' crap is just that. It is LITERALLY barely anything more than marketing to get people to think their year old gpu is somehow horribly, irrefutably, useless and outdated (Lets face it, thanks to ps4/xbone being WAAAAYYYY underpowered compared to ps360 reveal point in time, several year old computers now have a free ride for another console generation, if you are packing an icore, you are good to go, with minimal upgrades of ram and maybe a mid range gpu in a few years) and buy the 'dx11 compatable' gpu like the good little lemming they are.

#282210 Help me upgrade my Gaming Rig

Posted by 3Dude on 22 April 2014 - 08:01 AM in General Gaming

an old c2q board?

Im not gonna lie dude, while processing power wise you are going to still be doing pretty good... For those last gen games you mentioned.... Upgrade wise your future is looking pretty limited.

That T socket probably isnt going to be compatable with any ram you can find, or even WANT to find on store shelves.

Unless you have an X48, X38, or P45 board, you can forget about upgrading ram.

Even if you did, these boards really dont make much benefit out of ddr3 anyways.

Id highly suggest scrapping the c2 and getting an icore.

Probably scratch up an i5 for 300 easy, add in ram and a good deal on a midrange gpu, and you can put an xbone to shame for less than it costs.

Just keep in mind, all amd partnership games are going to require an 8core cpu for minimal specs, as part of a promo deal to help amd move their horrible cpu's..... (stupid beroucratical bs needs to stay away from mah games!!!!)

Cant say I really believe current Capcom is capable of delivering a resident evil game worth my time..

Especially now that its blatantly obvious capcom makes games for the intent of checking off investors 'generic marketed game formula' boxes, instead of making games for people who play them.

The only thing real capcom has left is the monhun team, and its only a matter of time before they destroy them.

#282242 Resident Evil 7 will be Revealed at E3 2014

Posted by 3Dude on 22 April 2014 - 10:34 AM in General Gaming

As long as they have the people they do now in the US branch there is hope for Capcom. They get it. Japan side of Capcom is the clueless ones wanting these western heavy games. Without the US branch never got Strider back for example.

No, unfortunately, they arent. Stryder was designed by the japanese studio, with grunt work provided by double helix.

From an osaka studio staffed by displaced production studio 1 (among others) members.

Capcoms recent woes are the result of investors turning the company into a corporation. Being successful and making money is not enough for these people. They demand constant quarterly growth year after year after year after year.

Seeing the fact that some crap quality mobile games that cost no money to make have gone on to be stupid million sellers, and that cod annual releases are always million sellers have them demanding Capcom follow suit, or they will pull their investment, leaving capcom high and dry.

Since capcom no longer has their own money, they are now entirely at the mercy of their investors.

Enjoy gems like Stryder. Things like that are quickly going to transition from endangered to extinct if something doesnt change.

No you don't get it. The fact it exists is because the US branch pushed it upon the thing ever happening. My boy has lunch with them and drinks with them often.

No, YOU dont get it.

1. That game actually happening, and who requested what has jack all to do with the capability of making a resident evil game thats not 6 and operation racoon city garbage. Which was, you know, the entire point of the first post you quoted, and what you responded with was completely off the subject and context to the point of being non sensical as a reply to what I posted.

2. Things like that happening, are virtually done now. Maybe you missed the memo, but capcom 'intends to double down on only established iterative franchises for aaa games. And heavily persue the lucrative mobile games market.'

People who make games like strider. People who like innovating, and trying exciting new game concepts, or just not being forced to make mobile crap, or cookie cutter numbered repititions, wont stay and be forced into that crap.

They will leave.

Like how the people who created mega man left. Like how the people who made resident evil left. Like how the people who made Okami left. Like how the people who made devil may cry left....

So what the hell good is some good guys in Capcom USA trying to greenlight good projects going to do, when the only 'talent' left to make said projects are a bunch of tree climbing crap flingers?

Nah you're the one write all the essays you want but Capcom USA made it happen fact. Wikipedia all you want but the fact is my boy knows them personally and they made it happen. Capcom Japan has some talent but it's a family run business with rainbowheads running the place and always been like that. Just they stopped listening to ideas and made one bad decision after he next. They need a management change.

Not even reading your long winded rant. Nothing you can say I don't already know unless it's tech specs. I live and breath this industry from morning til night and will do so into death ashes in a console and been doing it for a long time.

You havent read ANY of my posts; not even the first one you responded to, because NONE OF YOUR RESPONSES HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT IVE SAID.

For example. I NEVER REFUTED THAT CAPCOM USA GREENLIGHTED THE GAME (Greenlight means they gave the call to start the gamesKE production).

I refuted the SUBJECT of your post, 'Capcom will be all right as long as the us branch has dem guys', NOT that you claimed they were responsible for greenlighting the game.

I simply stated they didnt DESIGN/MAKE THE GAME.

And then I posited the logical argument that you dont seem to be able to understand:

What good is a couple of suits who greenlight games like Stryder IF THERE IS NO LONGER ANYONE LEFT WHO CAN MAKE A GOOD GAME?

Holy crap its like im talking to saturn.

#282321 Why NES Remix is not on the 3DS.

Posted by 3Dude on 23 April 2014 - 03:08 AM in General Gaming

I'm not saying it wouldn't struggle, but it shouldn't take that long to optimise it for the 3DS, heck we have a very nice smash bros on there running 60 fps. shouldn't be that hard for a company like nintendo

You would think so. But timing perfect emulation is EXTREMELY deceptively, stupid hard to do.

You should take a look at m2's interviews at how much trouble they had with the ps2 genesis collection. (these are also the guys who do a lot of virtual console stuff)

Doing the emulation is incredibly easy. Doing it PERFECT timing wise is damn near impossible, especially for certain exotic console architectures, and requires surprisingly beefy hardware. Its not the games thats the problem, but the inscrutably high standards nintendo has for absolutely perfect control timing.

They arent saying it cant be done, but, for a title like nes remix, which is just a downloadable eshop title, and not a huge AAA main game release, that needed to come out quickly, likely to help fill out the barren release scheduele, the time it would have taken to get the timing to reach their sky high nintendo standards on the 3ds, would have been too much work, and take too long, on a system thats not hurting for quality software, and thus makes less sense than the far easier, far quicker task of meeting those same high standards of the far more powerful wii u, which is in desperate need of content.

Posted by 3Dude on 23 April 2014 - 08:42 AM in The Café

Makes sense. I wouldnt want to be anywhere near georgia without a gun.

Theres a reason Patton brought out a company of Shermans and threatened to blow Phenix city off the face of the Earth. (True story place is diiiiiiirty)

BUT on a serious note:

Hey Captain canada, must be convenient to pretend things like the Sheldon massacre dont exist. I mean, it was SSOOOOOOO long ago. Like 2006. Thats back when the wii and ps360 came out, its like ancient history. Its like, so old those 8 defenseless law abiding men who were shot to death are alive again already.

Also, 2011 study by Dr. Caillin Langmann found no beneficial effect on Canada's homicide or spousal homicide rates as a result of any of Canada's major gun control legislation since 1974, including FAC and PAL licensing, storage laws, the characterization of many types of firearms as prohibited or restricted, magazine restrictions, etc., all of which were enacted in that time period.

'The Langmann study concludes that the Canadian gun control laws which created and tightly regulate "restricted firearms", such as handguns and AR-15's, have had no effect on homicide.

'Currently, shooting and stabbing represent the two most common mechanisms for homicide in Canada, each accounting for approximately 30% of murders.'

firearm suicides declined by 55% (1287 individuals to a low of 568) [41] while the number of non-firearm suicides increased by 52% (2,046 in 1977 to 3,116 in 2003).[citation needed] In response to the 2001 registration requirements, some psychiatric doctors have argued that the legislation is not as effective as treatment in the prevention of suicide, given alternate mechanisms are available for suicide.

Oh, and unlike canada, whos homicide rate only dropped 5-10%.

The US has seen a 50% decrease in firearms homicides since 1993.
http://www.pewsocial...public-unaware/

Gun control doesnt decrease homicides and crime. Fixing the damn economy does.

But hooray for blind hate, unthinking intolerance, and ignorant arrogance.

Well, you are going to be losing a LOT of floating point power in the cpu. But thats okay, ps360 were kinda anamolies in that regaurd. arm flops compare pretty poorly even compared to x86 flops as they seem to be limited to 2 flops per cycle for FMAC and 1 for non fmac for 64bit precision... Which ps360 already have beat and with about double the cycles available...

The architecture was benched at 0.

2 mops per hz, so thats a pretty easy calculation for you.

Your gpu is where you want your flops, and with 96 shaders (bummer its not using the 330), you are looking at around 86 gflops.... Also pretty handedly beat by ps360.

Its a pretty fair beating all around.

The kraits best trait is that they are usable with devices that run on batteries, Something ps360 dont remotely care about.

Still, it is a more modern shader set, with modern support. For a one man or small team job, like you said, it is more than powerful enough for you to do what you want. And certainly more than powerful enough to make a fantastic looking game in the right hands.

(I think anything as powerful as a ps2 meets that criteria)
