#15967 Xbox 720 to display Avatar-like graphics

Posted by Biohazard on 18 July 2011 - 10:26 PM in General Gaming

Technology company AMD (supplier of graphics hardware for the Xbox 360) is claiming that the Xbox 360's successor will be capable of producing the kind of visual detail seen in James Cameron's Avatar, as reported on examiner.com via the August issue of Official Xbox Magazine US.

Cramming the kind of technology it took to render every frame of the eyeball-searing Avatar into a console within the next year or so sounds impossible, but AMD is claiming the next Xbox will launch with this within reach.

AMD would not confirm it was actually working on the next Xbox but director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison, has said that gamers have a lot to be excited about. Beyond visual fidelity Robison claims that the AI and physics capabilities of the next generation will allow for every pedestrian in an open-world title like GTA or Saints Row to be an individual character with a unique personality. This would mean NPCs would react in a whole host of new and different ways to in-game actions.

Of course, this is far from the first time this sort of hyperbole has been tossed out into the public. Gamers have been teased with promises of Toy Story graphics for the PS2 and Toy Story 2 graphics for the original Xbox before.

#16425 GoldenEye 007 Wii remake remade for Xbox 360 and PS3

Posted by Biohazard on 22 July 2011 - 01:03 AM in General Gaming

As far as I know, Nintendo only (partially) owns rights to the original N64 title. They don't really own the name itself. E.A. made GoldenEye: Rogue Agent across all last-gen platforms. Activision currently owns rights to the Bond license and the GoldenEye remake was so different from the N64 game that it didn't infringe anything. They can make it on other platforms other than Nintendo's any time they want.

#17627 COD MW3 Wii U

Posted by Biohazard on 31 July 2011 - 01:43 PM in Wii U Games and Software

While I do agree that the series has gotten gradually stale (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was very well-received by gamers), I am willing to try out Modern Warfare 3. There hasn't been any significant innovation to the franchise, but I can always count on the series to deliver entertaining popcorn-style action. As for Modern Warfare 3 heading for the Wii U, I would prefer an all-new game when Activision realizes it's time to change the formula for the series. But if they want to expand its audience, I would like some sort of a collection pack, containing all three Modern Warfare games, for the Wii U.

#18250 Sequels destroying gaming?

Posted by Biohazard on 03 August 2011 - 10:37 AM in General Gaming

For instance: Capcom. The worst offender of (And namer of) Capcom Sequel Stagnation. They will release games that are called 'sequels', but are really just the same game with tweaks. While that might have been ok back in the arcade days, in the modern day of update patches and DLC, this is unacceptable.

When Capcom announced Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (which was to be expected), I felt sorry for the people who bought the Collector's Editions.

#18297 COD MW3 Wii U

Activision just announced the Wii version (not Wii U).

I just got word that Emily is a demon, and that every time we access her blog, our souls get sucked.

#19141 Wii U's Rejection.

Posted by Biohazard on 05 August 2011 - 05:33 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Given what we know about the Wii U, I don't know if I should be worried about the system or not. The E3 2011 unveiling basically offered a cursory idea of where Nintendo is taking the console. I doubt Batman: Arkham City, Darksiders II, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Ninja Gaiden III, and Metro: Last Light are the only titles in the pipeline. Keep in mind, Ubisoft is possibly creating an all-new Assassin's Creed title. As for Nintendo heavily relying on third-parties to carry the Wii U, they may have decided to contribute more input for the system after seeing how that strategy for the 3DS backfired. Nintendo has been very aware of their mistakes in the past few months, so I don't think it's a stretch to think they may have re-evaluated their strategy for the Wii U. After all, Pikmin 3 could very well spearhead the launch since Miyamoto stated it's been making a lot of progress. The Wii U will not launch until after April 2012, which means Nintendo has plenty of time to effectively market the console before the release date.

#19147 3rd person vs. First person

Posted by Biohazard on 05 August 2011 - 05:51 PM in General Gaming

First-person shooters are great for giving gamers a more personal experience, or even adopting the personality of the character. Yet, third-person shooters allow more dynamic gameplay options. For example, melee combat in first-person shooters haven't been refined yet (The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim doesn't really count), so third-person shooters win me over with that because developers have been very flexible in seamlessly incorporating both shooting and brawling in games like Uncharted.

#19155 COD MW3 Wii U

Posted by Biohazard on 05 August 2011 - 06:01 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Ah, oh well but there's still hope for a Wii U version.

An all-new Call of Duty title when Activision decides its time to innovate the series sounds more preferable for me. If there ever will be a Wii U version, they better release them in one of those collection packs (Modern Warfare trilogy). There's no doubt that Activision will do it. Bobby Kotick really needs to fill his swimming pool of money to go skinny dipping in.

#19548 Future of Graphics

I don't see the gaming industry giving up polygons any time soon, seeing as how much progress has been made on them.

My favorite is Pac-Man where they added "OM NOM NOM NOM."

#21023 Do you think Nintendo should move to the iPhone?

Posted by Biohazard on 13 August 2011 - 12:04 AM in General Gaming

Wouldn't it be a better idea if Sony (or the second-party companies they own) made games for Nintendo? Wouldn't it be awesome if Killzone, Resistance, inFAMOUS, God of War, or the Ratchet & Clank series were played with the innovative Wii U tablet controller?

#21053 Future of Graphics

Posted by Biohazard on 13 August 2011 - 04:06 AM in General Gaming

It looks like tessellation/displacement mapping may be the next logical step for graphics. From what I read, this technique may solve some of the problems with blocky and bland areas in polygon graphics (as that video points out) even though that has yet to be proven. It is not yet completely embraced and may take a while for it to be, but there has been some implementations in popular titles like Crysis 2 through the DirectX 11 update.

#21153 Republican Presidential Candidate inadvertently quotes Pokemon theme

Posted by Biohazard on 13 August 2011 - 12:36 PM in The Café

One of the weirdest moments of last night's Republican debate probably slipped completely under the radar for most viewers. This moment occurred in Herman Cain's closing statement, when the former pizza-chain CEO recited a favorite inspirational quote: "A poet once said, 'life can be a challenge, life can seem impossible, but it's never easy when there's so much on the line.'" Nothing strange about that on the surface, until you Google the quote and you realize that these words of wisdom were uttered not by a poet, but by disco queen Donna Summer in her song "The Power of One." Even more bizarre, this isn't even one of Summer's classic hits — she recorded it just over a decade ago as the theme song for Pokémon: The Movie 2000

While there is a dispute as to whether or not video games are art, there is no doubt it is relevant in the realm of politics.

#21498 Wii U's Rejection.

Posted by Biohazard on 14 August 2011 - 10:15 AM in Wii U Games and Software

For all the naive people (and thats alot!), i think its pretty much about image. I dont really think nintendo helps the wiiU by making it seem casual and childish (plastic white and still having wii in the name, WII LOOKING CONSOLE?), why cant it have an cool image? (stylish black and awesome name etc?, i mean if nintendo doesnt launch some cool commercials, everyone expect nintyfans will believe its just an upgraded wii (like the ds to 3ds, everyone believes its an dsi with 3d). And guess what? Its almost too late (i believe), many people already believes that the wiiu is just and expansion controller for the wii (i didnt see a console in the e3 video :-/ )

The plastic white design has a sleek and universal appeal, not "childish". The casual look helped the Wii shake off gamers' memories of the GameCube's "toyish" look, which made it easy for Nintendo market the console to a wide audience. Why abandon it with the Wii U? You seem to forget that Nintendo has always offered variety of colors with their consoles and handhelds, including the Wii. The Wii U will eventually have a black finish if the console stays throughout its lifespan.

As for the the Wii U, it has an all-new controller, and Nintendo plans to recapture the hardcore market that they have been criticized for abandoning throughout the Wii's lifespan. And, no, it's not too late! None of us know anything else beyond the controller. The console won't be released until after April 2012 (with Holidays being an ideal time), so Nintendo has plenty of time to market the console.
