#276256 Vine bans all sexually explicit content

Posted by Zinix on 07 March 2014 - 06:01 PM in The Café

Vine has previously taken steps to hide pornographic and sexually explicit videos shared by its users, but today it's outright banning the content. The company has updated both its rules and terms of service to prohibit sexually explicit material. "As we’ve watched the community and your creativity grow and evolve, we’ve found that there’s a very small percentage of videos that are not a good fit for our community," the company said in a blog post. "For more than 99 percent of our users, this doesn’t really change anything."

#276248 Zorro' to be rebooted, gritty Nolan/Dark Knight style

Posted by Zinix on 07 March 2014 - 05:49 PM in The Café

Ever since Antonio Banderas last donned the cape in 2005's The Legend of Zorro, rebooting the Zorro franchise has proven a Sisyphean project for Hollywood. The last we heard about a Zorror film was Fox's Zorro Reborn, a post-apocalyptic interpretation of the hero that was to star Gael García Bernal. That was two years ago. In the meantime, it looks like Sony Pictures -- the studio behind the Banderas films -- is moving ahead with its own competing project that was originally announced around the same time as Reborn.

Deadline reports that Sony has signed Chris Boal to write the studio's Zorro reboot. Not only is Boal a screenwriter, he's also a playwright and competitive fencer.

While that combination may sound like a perfect fit for the franchise, the direction in which the studio reportedly wants to take the story will rankle some Zorro fans. Insiders say that Sony's reboot will take the Dark Knight route, featuring "gritty realism and an emotional core." The swordplay inherent to any Zorro story will remain, but it will be accompanied by European martial arts that combine "swords, daggers, grappling and bare knuckles."

This rumor is amusing considering that the Dark Knight himself was largely inspired by Zorro. In fact, in the comics, Bruce Wayne's parents were killed as the family was leaving the theater where they had just seen a Zorro film.

You don't understand. It's because you're phattt.

Go read on proper nutrition. Too much sodium in any diet is dangerous. You're part of the problem .

That isn't the point.

The majority of America is obese. Just because I don't eat there doesn't mean they shouldn't have nutritional standards.

McDonald's is going with Mac sauce for its newest premium sandwich, the Bacon Clubhouse.

Along with Big Mac special sauce, the burger comes with either a quarter pound beef patty or grilled or crispy chicken, thick-cut Applewood-smoked bacon, caramelized grilled onions, white processed cheddar, leaf lettuce, and tomato on a shiny egg-washed artisan roll.

While already available in some markets, the Bacon Clubhouse is set to launch nationwide on Monday, March 10, 2014.

Some of you might remember the burger from last year when it was being tested out in Florida.

#276087 Staples to Shut 225 Stores as Online Competition Hurts Sales

Posted by Zinix on 06 March 2014 - 02:21 PM in The Café

Staples Inc. (SPLS:US), the largest U.S. office-supplies chain, will close as many as 12 percent of its North American stores and cut as much as $500 million in costs as online competition continues to hurt sales. The shares fell.

The annual pretax savings, which the company expects to achieve by the end of 2015, will come from areas including the supply chain, sales force, marketing and information-technology services, in addition to the store closings, the Framingham, Massachusetts-based company said in a statement today.

The retailer is facing increased threats from Internet-based rivals such as Amazon.com Inc., a challenge that spurred Office Depot Inc. to merge with OfficeMax Inc. last year. Staples said sales in its fiscal first quarter will fall from a year earlier, the fifth straight quarterly decline, and profit will be as much as 22 cents a share, trailing analysts’ 27-cent average estimate.

STORY: Staples is Shrinking, Radio Shack is Sinking
Staples’ sales slowdown “reflects both tough industry conditions and underperformance” by the chain, Denise Chai, an analyst with Bank of America Corp. in New York, wrote in a note to clients today. She has the equivalent of a sell rating on the shares.

The shares fell 15 percent to $11.35 at the close in New York for the biggest one-day decline since May 18, 2011. The stock has slid 29 percent this year, compared with a 1.6 percent gain for the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index.

Store Closings

Staples shuttered 42 stores in North America last year, ending 2013 with 1,846 in the region. The plan announced today calls for as many as 225 closings. Kirk Saville, a spokesman for Staples, didn’t immediately respond to voice mails and an e-mail seeking comment on how many jobs will be eliminated by the cost-cutting plan.

STORY: Why Angry Postal Workers Should Buy Staples Stock
“With nearly half of our sales generated online today, we’re meeting the changing needs of business customers and taking aggressive action to reduce costs and improve efficiency,” Chief Executive Officer Ron Sargent said in the statement.

Fourth-quarter sales at stores open at least a year fell 7 percent, while sales from Staples.com gained 10 percent, the company said today.

Staples joins a broad swath of retailers shutting stores amid sluggish U.S. sales. Kids-clothes seller Children’s Place Retail Stores Inc. (PLCE:US) said today it would close 125 stores through 2016, including 41 locations it shut last year, while forecasting profit this year that trailed analysts’ estimates.
