#291459 Florida Father/Son attacked by thousands of wasps after they step on a nest

Posted by Zinix on 24 June 2014 - 08:09 PM in The Café

David Alverez and his son Jordan are lucky to be alive after they went for a stroll in a forest with their dog as they normally frequent until one of them had supposedly, accidentally stepped on a wasps nest and awaken a sleeping giant as thousand of wasps started swarming out and attacking them right after!. And it was extra bad for the father as he was allergic to hornets!.

Since the wasps was attacking the father mostly, it was assumed he had stepped on the nest and that's why he got the brunt of the attack as he had stungs all over his body as his son jordan tried to lead him back to the road to get help as they continued to surround him like a tree. They flagged down a car for help and the wasps got into the car of the man who tried to help him after he opened his window!

fortunately for them, a beekeeper was nearby and was able to help them and save the father as he developed pneumonia and a blood clot from the attack...unfortunately, the beekeeper had killed all the wasps after he arrived as he deemed it too "dangerous" to shoo them away since they were too aggressive.

That's what they get for disturbing nature

#290508 Starbucks to provide free college education to thousands of its workers

Posted by Zinix on 16 June 2014 - 08:52 AM in The Café

Starbucks will provide a free online college education to thousands of its workers, without requiring that they remain with the company, through an unusual arrangement with Arizona State University, the company and the university will announce on Monday.

The program is open to any of the company’s 135,000 United States employees, provided they work at least 20 hours a week and have the grades and test scores to gain admission to Arizona State. For a barista with at least two years of college credit, the company will pay full tuition; for those with fewer credits it will pay part of the cost, but even for many of them, courses will be free, with government and university aid.

Many employers offer tuition reimbursement. But those programs usually come with limitations like the full cost not being paid, new employees being excluded, requiring that workers stay for years afterward, or limiting reimbursement to work-related courses.

Starbucks is, in effect, inviting its workers, from the day they join the company, to study whatever they like, and then leave whenever they like — knowing that many of them, degrees in hand, will leave for better-paying jobs.

Even if they did, their experience “would be accreted to our brand, our reputation and our business,” Howard D. Schultz, the company’s chairman and chief executive, said in an interview. “I believe it will lower attrition, it’ll increase performance, it’ll attract and retain better people.”

In a low-wage service industry, Starbucks has for decades been unusual, doing things such as providing health insurance, even for part-timers, and giving its employees stock options. (Like other food and drink chains, it has also been accused of using improper tactics in fighting unionization drives.) Whether in spite of those perks or because of them, the company has been highly successful; its stock, which closed Friday at $74.69, has grown in value more than a hundredfold since it went public in 1992.

The company says that in its employee surveys some of the most compelling results are about higher education. Seventy percent of Starbucks employees do not have a degree but want to earn one; some have never gone to college, some have gone but dropped out, and others are in school, but have found it slow going.

#291468 Itagaki explains why he brought Devil 3rd to Wii U.

Posted by Zinix on 24 June 2014 - 09:34 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Devil's Third is a bloody shooter. A game obsessed with perfecting the close kill. And now it's a Wii U exclusive.

The shooter's creator, Tomonobu Itagaki, is a man best known for games that titillate with skimpy clothing, or lopped limbs. He's a to-the-point game maker, not shy with his criticism. So it's not surprising that in bringing the game to Nintendo, there were some arguments.

What might be surprising, though, is the idea that this developer — a man who is rarely seen without his dark sunglasses and worn leather jacket; a developer seemingly so different from Nintendo's famed creators — discovered within the Japanese game company not just strong allies, but what he describes as a fundamental design lesson.

"There are also cultural differences between the way that I've worked and the way Nintendo works, which is when it comes down to the basic grammar of games, the method of game creation," Itagaki said through a translator. "And so we certainly fought some, but I think that I saw the value in a lot of the ways that they do things and learned a great amount.

"Now this is close to a trade secret so I can't say too much, but I feel like I learned the most fundamental meaning of what it means to push a button. When you tell someone, 'Push the A button,' there's a wealth of information there. And I feel like all of us who have worked on this project, as a result, have grown a bit."

Now the game is back with the same drive to reinvent the up-close-and-personal kill in shooters, and to bring the game exclusively to Nintendo's Wii U. That the game is coming to the Wii U is in part due to Danny Bilson, the former senior vice president of creative development at the now defunct THQ.

It was to Bilson that Itagaki first went with his game all of those years ago.

Devil's Third, despite its jump from Sony and Microsoft consoles to Nintendo's Wii U, remains mostly unchanged. Itagaki said that 90 percent of the game's concept hasn't been altered. But that remaining 10 percent, he said, was shaped by Nintendo. Specifically, he said, Nintendo's Hitoshi Yamagami and Yusuke Nakano loved his project like their own and both helped and taught him.

"That other 10 percent I think really has been flavored by this cooperation with Nintendo," he said. "Now, as I'm sure you're aware, Japan is a small country in terms of landmass, but it still has an amazing concentration of lots of different cultures within it, and I think that Nintendo culture is one of those, and I had this opportunity to learn about Nintendo culture through the years working with them."

#292467 Coma victim reunites with family after 50+ years of separation before reuniting

Posted by Zinix on 06 July 2014 - 04:39 PM in The Café

A New York woman who lost her memory after waking from a two-year coma was finally reunited with her family in Mississippi. Celestine Gandy Thompson’s family hadn’t heard from her in so long that they assumed she had passed away.

Gandy Thompson, 70, left Mississippi when she was a teenager and lived in Buffalo, N.Y., for more than 30 years. In 1992, she survived a fire that left her in a coma for almost two years. When she awoke, her memory was in tatters.

When she tried to recall her family, all the would pop into her head was one name: Clarence Woolard. Woolard is her nephew.

"The girl asked me, she said, 'how long has it been, and did you ever find any of your biological family.' I said, 'no baby, I wouldn't know where to start.' She said, ‘just give me a name,' and his name popped up in my head," said Thompson. "So she went into the phone and she found him, and that's just how this came together."

Woolard spread the word to the rest of the family that Gandy Thompson was alive and well.

After 50 years of separation, she reconnected with her family to find she has 23 nieces and nephews, 64 grand nieces and nephews, 66 great-grand nieces and nephews and 34 great-great-grand nieces and nephews,

"In our minds, me and my brother was talking that she wasn't here anymore, because we hadn't heard from her in so long," said her nephew Donald Davis. "You know, we were overwhelmed and overjoyed when we found out that we had gotten in contact with her."

"That was wonderful. I've been thinking about her and wondering would I ever see her again. Would I ever get in contact again, but I was overwhelmed when I heard from her," said her niece Helen Woodward. "I was joyful. I was very joyful."

"It's a blessing. I prayed for this day. That the good Lord would let me live long enough for this day to come together to be with my family again," said Gandy Thompson.

#298343 Burger King Phone Mixup Inspires Hilarious Series Of Pranks

Posted by Zinix on 10 September 2014 - 05:46 PM in The Café

There's a guy in Chicago whose office phone somehow got listed on a Burger King website as the contact number for one of their local restaurants. As you might imagine, he gets a lot of calls from people looking to complain about service, apply for a job, or check on when their shift starts. But rather than complain, our friend made the best of the situation by pranking the crap out of everyone who calls him.

Above is a recording of one of those pranks, in which "Kevin" takes a call from a new Burger King hire who is just wondering when her first day is. "Kevin," who is a pretty damn good prankster for an amateur, lays out a series of nightmare scenarios that the poor woman will have to participate in, including "feathering and butchering" and "blood duty." He isn't completely heartless, though, and comes clean at the end of the call. They both have a good laugh, and everybody goes merrily on their way.

Below is another recording that the prankster sent to us, in which he plays the role of a salty Burger King manager blowing off a woman who calls to complain about rainbowty service:

#294488 The Walking Dead' cast and producers promise that 'every single thing...

Posted by Zinix on 30 July 2014 - 05:26 AM in The Café

st episode will be a spoiler.

Fans have been weighing in with their thoughts about the new Walking Dead season 5 trailer that debuted at Comic-Con in San Diego, but what about the cast and producers themselves? What do they have to say about it? After the awesome experience of watching them watch it on a monitor while backstage at their panel, I asked TeamWalking Dead their thoughts later when they stopped by the Entertainment WeeklyRadio (SiriusXM, channel 105) studio at the convention, and now you can hear the entire conversation by clicking on the audio player icon below

Joining us were none other than cast members Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, and Michael Cudlitz, along with executive producer Scott M. Gimple and co-executive producer Denise Huth. So what do they make of the clip, in which, according to Cudlitz, “it certainly looks like we’re heading to DC” to find a cure for the zombie outbreak? It seems the cast has been getting a kick listening to fans hypothesize as to what it all means. “The theories are fantastic,” says Gurira.

So exactly how much did Gimple stress about putting the trailer together, especially when “every single thing in the first episode is a spoiler,” according to Huth? Listen in to find out. And you’ll also get to hear Reedus, Yeun, Cohan, Cudlitz, and Gurira share their fondest Comic-Con memories as well as the debut of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Michonne.” Plus, who freaks out on set over the proper way to eat an Oreo? The answer can be found by clicking on the audio player below. And for more Walking Dead scoop,

The SPOILER is that everyone dies.

As Parsons explained to me, players are free to tackle the campaign alone or with two friends. Every mode is played with groups of threes, incidentally – even adversarial multiplayer – as Bungie feels it offers the best balance for the three available classes. Each mission contains both private and public spaces, meaning some areas are dedicated solely to your three-man team, while other areas will be filled with additional players

#276793 Monster Hunter creator talks 10 years of MH, series' status in the West,...

Posted by Zinix on 11 March 2014 - 12:34 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Mar 11, 2014 by RawmeatCowboy | Comments: 6 | Show/Hide

Coming from a Eurogamer interview with Monster Hunter creator and producer Ryozo Tsujimoto...

E: This time last year you told me you hoped Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate would help secure a breakthrough for the series in the west. Do you feel you achieved that?

Ryozo Tsujimoto: It would have been impossible to imagine five years ago we would be able to get over 100 people together to bring their game systems to play Monster Hunter in the west. We definitely aren't sitting on our laurels with the achievements we've had with the last title and its sales. But we want to bring the title to even more people and increase the player base with the next iteration of the series.

We've definitely developed the community greatly from when it started in the west, from when the first title was released here. We've got to a great place now, but we're not stopping. We're going to keep going and we're looking forward to being able to achieve greater heights with the community and with the next Monster Hunter titles over here.

E: But what can you do beyond what you've done previously to increase the popularity of Monster Hunter in the west?

Ryozo Tsujimoto: Monster Hunter 4 has got online play for the first time in a portable entry in the series. That's going to mean we've got a whole new stage we can bring the community to. We have our community members now who love to meet up and play the game on local wireless. We hope they can be ambassadors for the title, so when we get more people into the next one and they want to play online, they've got a whole gang of people waiting there who know the game inside out. If they're newcomers to the series and not sure what to do, or they want to go on a quest but they don't want to go alone, if we can use our built-in community as a way for people who are new to say, don't worry, we're here and we'll give you a helping hand, then that's going to be a great way to expand the size of the community.

And then of course people who join that way, perhaps through online play as a first step, will then hopefully get involved in the game community itself and then they'll be motivated to come and join some of the meet ups and get involved in the whole community spirit. So, the online functionality will be a big step in the west in growing our community size even larger than it is today.

E: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is coming to the west on 3DS. But you haven't announced it's coming to Wii U, as Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate did. Do you plan to release it on the Wii U? The reason you should is because if you did, you could call it Monster Hunter 4U.

Ryozo Tsujimoto: Yeah, that title naming would be a lovely coincidence. That would be pretty sweet.

At the moment we're focused on 3DS, purely because with the previous title, the 3DS version couldn't go online on their own. There was a system to bring them online in conjunction with the Wii U console, but they were only local wireless play by themselves.

In 4 Ultimate, it will be online play just on the 3DS. We really want to see how having just a single platform online multiplayer game works out. So at this time we're focusing on the 3DS version. Monster Hunter 4 in Japan was also 3DS only.

E: Monster Hunter is 10 years old. What will it be like in another 10 years?

Ryozo Tsujimoto: I wonder if I'll still be working or retired by then! My first instinct is to worry about my own health!

It's never going to be drastically changed out of the fact it's a multiplayer action title. We'll still be pursuing the ultimate we can make in that arena. And we'll continue to use this process I mentioned.

It's like World of Warcraft, whenever they put out an expansion it's always had a lot of feedback from the fanbase incorporated into it every time. They keep putting it through that cycle. We will do the same thing we have been doing, which is every time a title comes out we take the player base's concerns seriously and try to plug that feedback straight into the next title to develop it.

If I have to think about what I hope it will be in 10 years, I'd like to think we will have refined the action part of the gameplay even further, that it will get better and better with every iteration. Trying to picture that title in my head is quite difficult.

#286352 Sheriff Confirms Seven Dead in Isla Vista Shootings

Posted by Zinix on 24 May 2014 - 07:28 AM in The Café

Brown said the initial call came in to dispatch at 9:27 p.m. Friday night as multiple gunshots.

Deputies in the area found several victims and received information about the suspect and vehicle involved.

Witnesses described seeing a black BMW speeding through the streets, spraying bullets at people and various targets near El Embarcadero and Segovia Roads and the top of the loop along Del Playa.

Brown said at 9:33 p.m. the suspect exchanged gunfire with deputies then veered down Del Playa and crashed into a parked car. Deputies found the suspect inside the BMW dead from a gunshot wound to the head. Brown said he did not know if the suspect was shot and killed by deputies or if the wound was self-inflicted.

The sheriff said a semi automatic handgun was recovered from the scene and believes the suspect acted alone.

In total, the sheriff confirmed seven people were killed, including the gunman; seven others are hospitalized either with gunshot wounds or traumatic injuries -- one with life-threatening injuries; there are nine separate crime scenes.

The time frame between the first 911 call to the discovery of the dead suspect was ten minutes.

Multiple witnesses say they saw two people inside the suspect's vehicle, however, during the press conference, Sheriff Brown would neither confirm nor deny whether there was a passenger in the car.

At this time, the sheriff is not releasing the suspect's name, although he has been identified.

Brown called the suspect "severely mentally disturbed" and said, "This was a premeditated mass murder."

Word on the street quickly spread about an ominous YouTube video posted by a young man who identified himself as Elliot Rodger, titled "Retribution." The nearly seven minute long rant blasts women who've ignored or rejected him over the past eight years and warns that he will "punish you all for it."

When questioned about the video during the news conference, Sheriff Brown indicated investigators were familiar with it and are looking into whether Roger was connected with the crime.

The victims include someone who was shot dead inside the I.V. Delimart on Pardall Road. The market windows are pocked with bullet holes. Another crime scene is marked near the 7-11 convenience store.

Xavier Mozejewski told NewsChannel 3 reporter Victoria Sanchez that he witnessed some of the violence and described it as an "old western shoot-out."

Michael Vitak, a student from the Czech Republic, told Sanchez what he witnessed.

"Guys in a BMW. Maybe they were trying to prove they're tough," Vitak said during a live televised interview. Vitak saw them shooting at two girls; one was shot dead, the other was critically hurt.

"I heard shots, screams, pain," said Vitak. "All emotions. I hope she is going to be fine," he said.

Vitak said it was too dark to see the suspects' faces.

About the same time the drive-by shootings occurred, the California Highway Patrol website logged a hit and run along Del Playa that left someone with major leg and head trauma.

NewsChannel 3 senior reporter John Palminteri said via phone, "It is a horrible scene out here."

Palminteri described multiple ambulances, a black BMW that slammed into as many as two cars, and a body covered with a yellow tarp lying in the road on Del Playa. He indicated the deceased may have been shot by a deputy or police officer.

By 12:15 a.m. Saturday morning, Palminteri updated viewers that he'd seen a total of four body bags.

One woman identified as Sierra told Sanchez she was approached by two men in a black BMW. The driver flashed a small black handgun and asked '"Hey, what's up?"'

Sierra, who was visibly shaken, said she thought it was an airsoft gun and kept walking. She said seconds later, she felt something buzz by her head and quickly realized they were bullets. Three or four of them.
