#311574 Splatoon download requires just 1,800 MB of disk space

some of its from compression, some of it may also be from not not using a unique asset on every surface in your game, and other expensive small details.

#311420 Wii U - Shin Megami Tensei & Fire Emblem Crossover Project Gameplay Trailer

Posted by tboss on 02 April 2015 - 08:45 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Didn't really know what to expect when it was announced, still don't really know what to expect now.

I was wondering if the game takes place in the future of one of the lands in fire-emblem, in which case one or more of the games will have taken place in the distant past. Of course the interview also says modern day japan. Not sure if that's the bases or the actual location.   The game play doesn't tell me much ether, except it is unlikely to feature the battlefield general in a obvious way.

Judging from the little game-play we saw, there appears to be at least some positioning. As well as enemies/players not necessary attacking in turns but in a specific order, that changes throughout the battle. At this point I doubt it will be instanced turn based battles, though that is still possible, but we may get something in-between what came from code-name steam and ff12/xenoblade style combat. This also makes me wonder if you can control multiple squads in how and where they fight, but that is pure speculation, can give the game a tactical feel.

Not sure how this crossover is going to go, I don't trust it to be good, but still interested.

#311416 Retro Studios - New Game Engine? New IP Or Metroid? Wii U

So a rumor of what most of us assumed retro would be doing regardless?  Though it may be a little unfortunate how little the engine will be used =/

#311151 Nintendo Direct - April 1st - NO JOKE 6pm EST / Treehouse Live Afterwards

so probably BS EU direct, Also some of the supposed announcment would make more sence in a global direct, unless Nintendo is releasing regional versions.

#311006 Man at arms-Master Sword/Hylian Sheild

definitely well made,  They did leave out the link is left handed, and the shield was built for right handed people, Though im not sure how much it effects the shield itself, but they did bring up that fact in the video.

Does the sniper rifle have a scope in game? In a recent video I didn't see a scope, but this model shows it..    Either I missed it or it's something you can get from the shop for it?

splatoon-3-640x640.png

at this point, i doubt it will have a traditional sniper scope mechanic. The game seems to use a laser so far to say where you are aiming. That said it may have a zoom or over the shoulder zoom. At-least that would subjectively fit the game better from what we have seen so far.

As for the above, Nintendo seem to be solid supporters of rule 34. At minimum, aren't bothered by the US's comparatively conservative attitude for that sort of thing.

so Nintendo is still considering allowing one of their ip's to get into a movie or tv show.

#310865 Official Nintendo Software Emulation Question

Posted by tboss on 22 March 2015 - 08:58 AM in Wii U Games and Software

emulators need to be able to interpret the hardware commands from the game, and then convert them to commands for the operating system, and later, to machine code. This means your computer needs to operate several times faster to make up for having to do multiple extra steps for each 1 step the original system had to do. Note if Nintendo used a new hardware architecture, They wouldn't need to be as powerful in comparison to normal PC, as the emulator can skip several steps such as translating to the OS first, then the actual hardware, it can just translate straight to hardware. That said, it will still have to be noticeably more powerful for 1:1 emulation.

#310546 If nintendo uses X86 on their next console, will you buy it?

Posted by tboss on 14 March 2015 - 08:35 PM in Wii U Hardware

i would still probably buy it, though it they do go x86/64 They better do things to make the change worthwhile, though that would be assuring ports and working with PC, as well as options for custom servers and similar.  They should be able to emulate wii/GC regardless.

realistically i doubt it.  Also I wouldn't call going full back words compatibility to wiiU a good idea, simply because of the game pad. You will need to bundle a gamepad which adds a 100+ cost to the console, or have people buy a separate pad. You cant use the pad from your old wiiU as it will need to be sold with the console to buy the new one, if your keeping your wiiU, the backwards compatibility is worth about as much as changing the HDMI, assuming you don't have enough ports.

Though we may eventual see the wiiU converted to a handheld, and be compatible as a controller to whatever nintendo's home console is at the time. Though by the time this happens, wiiU may be emulatable.

#310541 new Splatoon gameplay!

Posted by tboss on 14 March 2015 - 07:57 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Well I do own COD on the Wii U so I'll give it a try at some point. My only memory so far was of trying it on the Wii and finding it an absolute nightmare. I think it was Goldeneye I played.

wii-mote was powerful in golden-eye =/

as for CoD, that game's ir aiming has many of the features for customization, so should work fine. also think blackops 2 had an glitch that stopped you from turning with wiimote, so i wouldn't recommend it. As for getting used to the control scheme in general, start with a game with lock-on, such as the prime games, it helps greatly with learning the control scheme and using it well.

holy shiznet at the new music download. Makes up for the videos music.

That music sounds very... out of place.  I can see it working as the battle theme for one of the alien races, or a specific area, I hope its not the song that plays whenever you fight some random monster =/.

#310296 new Splatoon gameplay!

Posted by tboss on 10 March 2015 - 10:41 AM in Wii U Games and Software

What do you mean with the separate axis? I' ve played the demo on Gamescom and you can controll the camera either with stick and gyro in all directions.

And with the Wiimote you can play fast shooters really good, you only need good setting adjustments Marcus T.

as in you can use 2 different input methods for aiming in different directions. This can, and probably will, help with aiming and increase accuracy as it allows you to use each individual control method a little more accurately than you would normally.  That said i would still take wiimote aiming over stick+gyro atm.

#310270 new Splatoon gameplay!

Ok well I agree on PC. I haven't played a game that does shooting with the wiimote very well in a situation where you have to run and gun. I thought the wiimote was excellent in RE4 but that was largely because you stop when you shoot. What games have done it well for running and gunning? And how did they deal with problem of turning the screen to aim?

the screen turns in the direction you aim, which is perfectly viable, and often times preferable to run'n'gun play styles simply because it lets you aim, and react much quicker than the other 2 control scheme, but sacrifices ease of use, as the player needs to track their courser in relation to the player and the camera.

The screen turning from your aim does make the wii-mote as a whole harder to use effectively, and one of the reason's the sensitivity options are much more complex then a bar, with dead-zones, turn speed, acceleration based-on distance from the dead-zone/box/center of the screen, ect.  It does make the control scheme a little harder to use competently, but it doesn't sacrifice from the precision or effectiveness of the controller as a whole.

other note, the lack of the camera responding to where i was aiming on the scheme through me off and it made it a little harder to respond to things like getting flanked, though it does make the control scheme easier to use for people new to wiimote aiming, i would have added the option for more traditional ir aiming where it controls the camera, and had floating scope for the snipers, as having them fixed on screen made snipers only useful as pre-magnum magnums.

Here is a example, this is of COD and there is much room for improvement to the IR in this game, but it is a example, atleast until (if one is even made) there is a well made shooter with IR controls on wiiU.  This player can also benefit by resting his arm/wrist on something to help stabilize his aim. People who are used to the control scheme also tend to crank the sensitivity.  If turning with the mote throws you off, just make big dead-zones so you rarely do it while you are aiming.

Also some PC games control the same way simply because fixing the pc in the center doesn't always work for the game.

This is of star citizen which uses the same kind of controls, though its a bit harder in this game because it uses actual physics, and thus the ship/camera can't respond perfectly to the motion and thus instead needs to accelerate in the direction you aim. It does still work in the same way basic way wiimote ir works.

We will see how Twinstick+Gyro aiming turns out in Splatoon. I hope its good and customysable. I'm a big supporter of Wiimote aiming though, so i hope its an option too^^

it separates vertical and horizontal aiming onto 2 separate axis's, which should be an improvement, but i doubt it will reach ir or kbm quality.

#310215 new Splatoon gameplay!

Hard to imagine how it would be. You surely need twin sticks for a shooter. Ok you don't NEED twin sticks but it's definitely the optimum method.

only thing duel analog (twin sticks) offers to shooters is comfort/ease of use.  It is inferior to wiimote and mouse/keyboard in accuracy and precision, to make up for this they add enough aim-assist that the game literately aims for you at times.

wiimote offers near identical precision to PC, but suffers from less options for button layout, and a much harder to use/learn aiming settings, though its worth it once you adjust to it.

PC works for button mapping and easiest to get the precision out of with the least effort, and you don't have the ease of use problems like hand stability and sensitivity settings. Its also less immersive and lacks good movement options in comparision.

Is there one more presentation before release in Japan?

If they do a story trailer, this trailer showed a little of the story.

Also, you can change who is in your party in this game, only saw 8 slots in the menu (4 for members and 4 reserve), and well over 8 in the direct, want the English translation for this one.

#309554 My impressions of heave... Smash Bros. Wii U

Posted by tboss on 23 February 2015 - 08:27 PM in Wii U Game Reviews

id say 9.8. Game is great but I only have minor grips with the game.

Casually there is nothing wrong with it that I can think of.

Competitively, Many defensive oriented options have alot of viability overall, which can lead to people forcing defensive games and help encourage defense oriented play. This is bad as it greatly slows down the pace of the combat and can lead to boring styles of play, as well as excessively long games. In a fighting game Offensive options should ALWAYS be overall greater than defensive options to encourage more engagements and styles of play. I don't think defensive options shouldn't exist, just that they should be noticeably weaker than they are in sm4sh.

Second issue is with diddy and any other easy to use top tier characters. I was fine with sheik and ZSS being potential top tier, as both took a fair amount of skill to use effectively, Diddy doesn't, Its the same issue with metaknight in brawl, though not to as severe of a extent, Hopefully the meta developed enough that Diddy becomes easily countered, but for now its a problem. In short easy to use characters should never make it to top tier, hard to use characters should make top tier much more often, with the exception of under powered 'challenge' characters. Yes distinctly under-powered characters serve a purpose in the games design, and overall benefit it. This wasn't a issue in melee or PM as the top tier characters took alot of skill to use effectively, and that skill was needed at high levels up play, in Brawl with MK, and to a lesser extent, Diddy in Sm4sh, neither take as much skill as most if not all of the other high tier characters.

I do not find issues with things like how long it takes to kill a stock in this game. The game and engagements are overall similar to past games with the main difference being more time in the neutral game and more engagements need to be won to effectively take a stock. All you should need to do is drop the number of stocks needed.

#309553 Devils Third - More New Tidbits

Posted by tboss on 23 February 2015 - 08:12 PM in Wii U Games and Software

given the game is more then a shooter, but an action one as well, ir pointer controls and transitioning into melee combat would be difficult. imo

That will depend more on what the actual controls are, or how the game handles melee weapons, More likely than not it will be mapped to buttons or button combinations, which is more than fine on the wii-mote, unless implemented poorly, the way around it is usually giving the player complete control of button remaps. Yet every game i played had disabled a button mapping option i wanted or restricted the mapping itself in some way with the exception of cod, unless they changed that in one of the newer ones.

in other words to have good wiimote controls, you need to give the user near complete control of the button map instead of presets, as well as a extensive actual IR options.

no option for ir pointer controls =(

Beyond that, this game still reminds me alot of TF2 so far, which is much more good then bad.  Hope the release date doesn't come to close to splatoon.
