#137659 An honest Wii U review (finally!)

Posted by Eggplante! on 24 November 2012 - 07:34 PM in Wii U Hardware

I think the problem with console reviews is that, for the most part, we have to review the potential of a system. As a piece of hardware, Wii U is a great concept, but not the best execution. However, it is not the best execution because the console is not the best, but because the games to utilize all its features have not been released yet.

A similar thing happened with Wii MotionPlus controls, where Skyward Sword was the first game to reaaaalllly make proper use of them. It is very much up to software developers (other than Nintendo, of course) to make use of the Wii U's capabilities to make the console itself a success.

#137620 Wii Mini

Posted by Eggplante! on 24 November 2012 - 04:22 PM in General Gaming

It probably won't be able to play GC games because the "family edition" removed support for it. So while I can see them making it even smaller... I don't really see a point. Maybe to save material costs while they ride the death out? :/ It's probably a fake rumour.

That's true. It might also be a surprise with perhaps two GC ports instead of four, and just a single memory card slot. Then again, I might be out to lunch. Of course, it would probably cannibalize their own sales if they made GameCube games available on the Wii U Virtual Console/eShop. Then again, how would we manage with controls? Even the Pro Controller doesn't line up with the GC controller unless you remap all the buttons to be inverse (analog on the top, buttons on the bottom).

Don't forget, the Game Boy Micro came out a year after DS when they stopped making GBA games, but that was also a pretty big failure so who knows.

#137372 Wii Mini

Posted by Eggplante! on 24 November 2012 - 08:30 AM in General Gaming

This makes sense and it doesn't. The consoles can only be so much smaller in width because the DVD is a fixed length. The length could be shortened, as well as the height slightly, but there still needs to be enough room for GameCube ports and memory card slots as well, assuming they don't remove those.

The only market I can see for this is the crowd that wants to play GameCube games because they can't do that on their Wii U. Of course, that is a feature that Nintendo could take out of the Wii Mini or whatever it's called.

Given that the console hasn't been announced and the Wii U hasn't been out for more than a few weeks, we just don't see this happening. Then again, more bizarre things have happened before.

#136681 Microsoft Looking to Release 2 Versions of the NextBox

Posted by Eggplante! on 23 November 2012 - 05:42 AM in General Gaming

This could actually work out very well in Microsoft's favour.

A $149 next-gen Xbox for your living room that replaces your set-top box, plays Blu-Rays, has Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube, as well as plays some XBL Arcade games? It does make sense. Don't forget, Blu-Ray players are $100 standalone, so for another $50, you get games and all the aforementioned? Might be good!

#136524 007 Legends

Posted by Eggplante! on 22 November 2012 - 06:49 PM in Wii U Games and Software

I'm a total James Bond nut, personally. I'd like to think I know what makes a good Bond game and what doesn't, but that's just based on what I like from the Bond series. Here's what I know for a fact: 007 Legends sucked.

Here's the first paragraph of my review:

The back of the box of 007 Legends says “Live the legend and relive the world famous spy’s most iconic and intense undercover missions.” Boasting incredible missions – “most iconic and intense,” remember – from Goldfinger, Moonraker,Licence to Kill, Die Another Day, and On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, in addition to some extra missions about Skyfall to be unlocked after the movie has been released in theatres, you would assume the game to be rather good.

Don’t.

#135354 More in-depth Wii U teardown.

Posted by Eggplante! on 21 November 2012 - 09:07 AM in Wii U Hardware

A lot of people like to tinker, so articles like this will come in handy later down the road when people cut windows in their Wii Us or do some other sort of mods. Being the first, iFixit has become the go to because Their guides are simple and detailed.

It will also certainly help those who need to repair themselves and have the confidence to do it themselves.

#135299 HDMI picture and AVMulti out

Posted by Eggplante! on 21 November 2012 - 06:29 AM in Wii U Hardware

Perhaps the only way is to use component video from the other connector. It will still produce 1080p visuals, but you may notice some slight signal disparity between that and connecting via HDMI. For what you get from Wii U and given that launch titles don't look any more stellar than an Xbox 360 or PS3 game, you shouldn't be missing out with Component.

#135298 Automatic Update

Posted by Eggplante! on 21 November 2012 - 06:21 AM in Wii U Hardware

Wii didn't have automatic updates.
It had updates on the disc which you had to do in order to play the game which came on the same disc.

I think Ecorsbie is referring to the notification (via the blue light) that updates were available. The Wii lights up when something is ready to be downloaded and installed.

#135296 Gamestop screwed my Wii U preorder over!

Posted by Eggplante! on 21 November 2012 - 06:20 AM in General Gaming

In Canada, GameStop (EB Games here) didn't get enough units to fulfill pre-orders. Rather than organize by when people preordered, they decided to do a line-up for people who pre-ordered. I was okay, but some people in line who had pre-ordered in September were beaten out by people who had only pre-ordered a couple of weeks ago. Not the right way to do it.

#135139 HDMI picture and AVMulti out

Posted by Eggplante! on 20 November 2012 - 09:25 PM in Wii U Hardware

The Wii U will only support one output of audio/video signal at one time. However, any HDMI port that is built to spec (anything on a TV by a name brand manufacturer) will be able to receive incoming audio. TOSLINK is available in addition to HDMI for devices that support it (some Blu Ray players and other home theatre equipment) but it is not necessary. HDMI is designed to carry both HD video signals as well as full surround audio signals.

#135138 Wii U supply not a issue....Yet.

Posted by Eggplante! on 20 November 2012 - 09:22 PM in Wii U Hardware

Don't forget that Wii demand was very limited only after Black Friday sales that year. The first few weeks was all about initial reception from gamers, but now that the console is out, once news media get hold of the story and put Wii U on all the holiday must have lists, you can bet supply will plummet.

#134943 Nintendo Says It’s Not Making Anymore Wii Games

Posted by Eggplante! on 20 November 2012 - 04:00 PM in General Gaming

I predict seeing a lot of dual-discs coming out in the next year or so. A game with a Wii disc that also has some sort of (very basic) functionality for he GamePad. They'll be transitional games that are made to bridge the gap between Wii and Wii U. They will not be by Nintendo however. There is little reason to buy a Wii U if you can get Nintendo's latest on the Wii. Smash Bros. Wii? Nope. Wii U? Certainly.

#134578 Is your gamepad rattling?

Posted by Eggplante! on 20 November 2012 - 10:34 AM in Wii U Hardware

Not trolling at all. It'll help by making sure you don't hear it. Just like the user above me said with the sound on, you barely notice anything.

If you guys would like me to stop posting, I have no problem doing that :)

Like I said, I'm here to be a member.

I had the chance to meet Reggie at E3 this past June. The first thing he did was whip out his 3DS and say, "Okay, are you Eggplante?"

Really awesome guy. Here are a couple of pics!

#134470 Wii U Pro Controller Review

Posted by Eggplante! on 20 November 2012 - 08:07 AM in Wii U Hardware

nice little review :) .

On a side note, would it be possible to use the Pro controller with pc games, like you're able to do with a 360 controller?

We haven't tested anything yet, but our guess is that the USB cable only draws power, not data. Also, drivers would have to be written to utilize the buttons. You can't connect it wirelessly since it uses a Wii U-specific frequency for data transfer, but theoretically, it would be possible if the USB cable carries data.

#133977 How do you transfer games from tv to gamepad?

Posted by Eggplante! on 19 November 2012 - 06:59 PM in Wii U Hardware

While Sonic does support it, keep in mind that some games do not. It would be great to have virtual console games with GamePad support so you can play classics on a quasi-handheld as they were intended (titles like A Link to the Past or Pokemon Red Version) but that doesn't seem to be happening either :(

#133973 ***EB GAMES HAD 2 DELUXE MODELS TODAY***

Posted by Eggplante! on 19 November 2012 - 06:56 PM in Wii U Hardware

There will be a few shipments trickling into stores over the next few weeks, but they will be in one or two unit shipments and be completely unpredictable. As far as we know, Nintendo is not planning on another mass shipment of Wii U until it can produce a large batch, will not be until after the holiday season. They also like the hype of the machine so there is not a ton of added pressure for Wii U production. It is a big piece of what made the Wii as successful as it was outside of gaming circles while it was widely just a "meh" console within gaming circles.

#133971 Is your gamepad rattling?

Posted by Eggplante! on 19 November 2012 - 06:54 PM in Wii U Hardware

If Apple had made this, the device would have design tolerances so small, the buttons would be perfect. But then Wii U might cost $549, not $349.
