#133645 Is your gamepad rattling?

Posted by Eggplante! on 19 November 2012 - 12:58 PM in Wii U Hardware

Its actually not the gyro and accelerometer that is the culprit for most of the noise. The stylus as well as the face buttons make a lot of noise when the GamePad is shaken.

#133282 Official Nintendo Network ID Sharing Thread

Our Nintendo Network ID is, as you may have guessed: Eggplante

Add us and let's get our game on!

#132852 Wii-U box not sealed

Posted by Eggplante! on 18 November 2012 - 06:54 PM in Wii U Hardware

It seems like Nintendo is going cheap on as much as they reasonably can given the fact that they're losing money on the Wii U (the first time they're losing money on their hardware). Things like the trays in the box aren't colored and numbered like the Wii, there really should be tape on the white Wii Us if the black ones have it, etc. it's very interesting.

Hey guys - the confusion seems to be the black versus white unit. We've got a bunch of units floating around here at Eggplante, and our white ones have no protective tape, but the black ones all do. Our guess is that the black one smudges and scratches easier.

In any case, there is nothing to worry about. All the packages are unsealed, as is usually the case with Nintendo hardware, and there is only tape on the black units.

#132482 Wii U unboxing video thread

Posted by Eggplante! on 18 November 2012 - 01:40 PM in Wii U Hardware

I'm uploading mine now, should be up soon :D

Looking forward to it! IGN always has good coverage of this kind of stuff (and they're usually first), but it's always awesome to see how gamers comment on the unboxing while they do it.

#132479 The size of Wii U games

Posted by Eggplante! on 18 November 2012 - 01:38 PM in Wii U Games and Software

a 50 GB game...my ISP won't allow that XD

There will undoubtedly be games that will not be available on the eShop. I don't foresee massive titles such as Pikmin 3, the next Zelda, Smash Bros., etc. as downloads.

Some great points, Desert Punk, but it's also worth noting that the Wii U will likely feel hindered by its relatively small disc capacity in a few years time. With that said, the laser in the Wii U could probably read dual-layer discs, but whether or not the discs are made is another story.

#132243 Wii U Speed.

Posted by Eggplante! on 18 November 2012 - 10:28 AM in Wii U Hardware

The Wii U does feel a bit slow, yeah. The Wii seemed to load games faster and had far more bearable load times. The noise of the machine is also quite ridiculous for a Nintendo console. It is at least as loud as an Xbox 360.

#132241 Wii U Review from Eggplante!

Posted by Eggplante! on 18 November 2012 - 10:26 AM in Wii U Hardware

The hardware seems to be extremely powerful so far. Don't forget that the console is creating not only a full 1080p picture, but also a near-720p one as well. Without the screen, the visuals would easily beat out what we've got with 360 and PS3 right now, but I'd personally rather have a few new ways to play than marginally better graphics.

Take a look at my review on Eggplante.com, but overall, the software seems a bit sluggish for my tastes.

#131812 White Charging cradle and stand for console and controller

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 10:11 PM in Wii U Hardware

The only cradle and stand available are black, unfortunately. I think a white one would even look great with a black GamePad.

#131737 Is the "hardcore" label being used wrong?

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 07:12 PM in General Gaming

I think most non-gamers assume hardcore games involve anything with guns or heavy subject matter. Gamers (true gamers, that is) should understand that hardcore gamer means a passionate player of any genre of game.

#131606 The Wii U should have some kind of 3DS player

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 03:47 PM in Wii U Hardware

I'm thinking 3DS functionality could happen with wireless streaming, as Jakester mentioned. Of course, it would require a Wii U and wouldn't just be a TV out function for the 3DS. Then again, Nintendo might decide to be nice and give us a sort of player attachment. In all likelihood, they could sell the player at a huge margin. A player for $49.99 would easily cost under $5 to make given that all the software and processing power is in the Wii U itself. The player would simply be a 3DS cart card reader. And we all know how cheap it is to make an SDcard reader.

#131586 The size of Wii U games

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 03:19 PM in Wii U Games and Software

I did notice something interesting in the wiiu game boxes it has clips for a extra plastic sleeve for aditional discs.

A lot of DVDs and even Xbox games are doing this now. It is cheaper to manufacture one case with the clips and manufacture the extra shelf only when needed than it is to manufacture two entirely different sets of cases. That's probably even more true for the colour of the Wii U cases being a non-standard game case.

#131583 Wait What?

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 03:16 PM in Wii U Hardware

In Canada, as well as the US, it is illegal to sell products with any sort of material rating (ESRB, Film Classification Board, etc.) before the street date.

In Canada, fines are anywhere from $15,000 for a single title to $140,000 for multiple offenses if I remember correctly. This applies to movies, games, hardware, etc.

A lot of smaller stores sell games and hardware before street date because this is the only way they can make money. A mom n pop games store might sell 500 copies of Halo 4 two days before launch because once it comes out, everyone will go to EBgames / Wal-Mart / wherever they buy games to get it.

#131566 The Wii U should have some kind of 3DS player

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 02:39 PM in Wii U Hardware

I understand Jakester897, but I'm saying that the person wouldn't need to buy a 3DS to play the game if Nintendo follows tradition with their Game Boy attachments.

#131328 The size of Wii U games

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 06:57 AM in Wii U Games and Software

It is not the size of the game that is really the issue for making great games, but rather the size of the world.

Smash Bros. will likely fit on a single layer disc, and probably come in around 10-20GB by my estimation. This is because they reuse a lot of graphics, and there is limited area to render. However, with a more open-world game like Zelda, there is a LOT more art required, more audio and speech, and different game mechanics.

Of course, these are estimations, but I'd go ahead and guess that the next Zelda would easily crack the 25GB capacity of the current Wii U disc.

#131327 New Zelda Game On The Wii U Rumored To Be Released In Fall 2014

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 06:54 AM in Wii U Games and Software

As much a Zelda fan as I am (I've go a Triforce tattoo, in fact), don't expect a major Zelda title (portable not included) before 2015 at the earliest. Between Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, there was a five year gap. Also, realize that Smash Bros. is on the way, likely a new Mario, etc.

I actually have it on official word from Nintendo that they are actually working on a new Zelda game, as I talked to Nintendo of Canada's Matt Ryan a few weeks ago:

#131325 ZombiU's a remake?

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 06:51 AM in Wii U Games and Software

A remake is trying to keep the same themes and gameplay from the original, like Ocarina of Time.

A reboot is changing major components like gameplay, graphics, audio, and the overall game. Much like Kid Icarus.

#131323 wii u system review in progress

Posted by Eggplante! on 17 November 2012 - 06:48 AM in Wii U Hardware

I'd recommend Eggplante.com but that would be a bit self-serving, I think.

Either way, you need to keep in mind that IGN's review is in fact a review in progress, and you'll notice they're not really commenting on hardware and rather making vague impressions at this point.

Nintendo has actually embargoed the media from releasing hardware reviews until 12:01 PST on Sunday morning, and there's no way IGN will break that.

It is dangerous to read a review of a product half-way through, because there is a lot that could surprise in the first few days. Of course, there is also the fact that IGN is just one site. Imagine if all you read was GameSpot's Skyward Sword review and how you might think the game isn't nearly as good as it really is.

#130967 The Wii U should have some kind of 3DS player

Posted by Eggplante! on 16 November 2012 - 02:28 PM in Wii U Hardware

There's also the possibility that any games you buy on eShop become cross-compatible with the Wii U, just like Sony and their Vita Cross-Play, Cross-Buy functionality.

Nope, the 3DS charger doesn't fit either. Just checked :)

#130959 The Wii U Surprisingly Portable (kind of)

I played about an hour of New Super Mario Bros. U in bed this morning without getting up. Of course, when I wanted to switch to Ninja Gaiden, up I got.
