#138872 Tally-ho, pip pip and Cheerio, it's the British Wii U Launch Thread.

And would you like a scone to go with that?

#138869 WII U SURROUND SOUND PROBLEM SOLVED!

Posted by illogicology on 27 November 2012 - 03:09 AM in Wii U Hardware

Pure bull... I have a Logitech sound system, and its one of a few cheaper sets that supports a pc at 5.1, and now if I want 5.1 on my console I need a whole new system because they chose not to go with the industry standard, or at least give the option? Pure ridiculousness.

Surely if it's a PC system, it's using three 3.5mm jacks right? That's their usual setup a no home A/V stuff uses that input.

Nobody is really losing anything from this decision. The Wii U is pretty much an HDMI only device, you can't output picture via HDMI and audio from the MultiAV port either so people without HDMI receivers were out of luck anyway.

Though, there is one silly decision according the American WiiU owners of NeoGAF. When you're listening to a stereo source, instead of sending a stereo signal it still outputs 5.1 but only sends information to the front channels. This means that if you do have it hooked up to an HDMI receiver, you're not going to be able to get ProLogic or DTS:Neo6 surround sound extrapolated because the receiver thinks it's getting 5.1 already.

Good morning, Chaps.

Now, as you all know, Professor Nintendo's Fantabulous Wee-ooh Gaming Machine ™ arrives at the White Cliffs of Dover within a week. To celebrate this remarkable state of affairs, I am introducing this thread for the rest of us charming Gentlemen to discuss the impending launch. Feel free to keep us updated on deliveries, stock issues, UK Wii U news and even excitement when it finally arrives. Nothing too vulgar, if you please. At the end of the whole sordid affair, we can tidy up and swap NNIDs.

I'll get the kettle on.

#138857 WOOP WOOP ASDA ORDER IS ON ITS WAY TO YOU

Awesomesauce!

Which reminds me, we could use a thread for us Brits/Europeans to talk about the impending launch, delivery dates, woes, swap NNIDs etc. Do we have one of those yet?

This is crazier than that time my nephew asked me what a GameBoy was.

#136761 IGN's Wii U game reviews are bad

Posted by illogicology on 23 November 2012 - 10:00 AM in Wii U Games and Software

Batman and Mass Effect reviews seem pretty fair. They're great games and while the ports aren't the best, they differences really don't seem to be much bigger than you'd see between some Xbox 360 and PS3 games. A lot has been made of the PS3's poor ports from 360 games, but multiplatforms have been closer than ever before in this generation. That the Wii U titles are getting the same kind of parity as the PS3 is pretty good and PS3 ports usually get the same score too.

I promise TO share them, is that alright?

#136732 CAPU's Pikmin Club visit and enjoy a daily dose of pikmin

Posted by illogicology on 23 November 2012 - 08:27 AM in The Café

Pikmin 3 is the reason my girlfriend and I are getting the Wii U. I'm a big fan of the series. As for my girlfriend, she's completed the first so many times. She plays it at least once every six months. Speaking of which, we'll have to get the Wii version of Pikmin at some point since the Wii U won't play Gamecube games.

#136716 Wii U 'Has A Horrible, Slow CPU' Says Metro Last Light Dev

Posted by illogicology on 23 November 2012 - 07:10 AM in Wii U Hardware

Have you even read about the PS4/nextbox rumors? Other than power they sound stupid. So I think the Big N is safe.

Rumours are just that, rumours. This Wii U is a very risky move and releasing now means it has to fight for a market share during two console generations. Launching a console a year ahead of the competition, with less power than the competition and relying on more unconventional features to differentiate yourself in the market is a risky strategy. It paid off for Nintendo with the Wii but that was in a very different economic climate and with an industry in a very different place. Furthermore, in a year's time the Wii U isn't just going to be fighting against the new consoles, but against the Wii's reputation which was soured towards the end of its life. There's a section of the Wii owning market that felt marginalised in the last generation and they'll be more cautious this time and so all Microsoft and Sony really need to do to win over that demographic is promise a steady supply of mainstream, modern games.

#136667 Wii U 'Has A Horrible, Slow CPU' Says Metro Last Light Dev

THQ aint in the position to be picky. The Wii U seems to be a profitable train to ride on and if THQ doest want to cash in on it so its THQ's loss and perhaps their eventual death.

It is right now but that might not be the case for long. Nintendo has been pretty clever in getting the jump on the competition like this, but AAA titles can take years to develop well. THQ might miss out for a year, but the truth is that the Wii U is something of a gamble, and nobody knows where Nintendo will be in 2014. I can think of another console that launched a year before the competition, did very well for a bit and then died, taking the whole hardware division of its parent company with it.

#136663 If the wii U gamepad was it's own system, would you still buy it?

Posted by illogicology on 23 November 2012 - 05:12 AM in Wii U Hardware

Not really. As a handheld, it would be a pretty poor design. The Vita is already at the limits of a good size for a handheld and the Gamepad is bigger and fatter than that. If it were a handheld, you wouldn't get Wii U quality games either. I like the Gamepad from what I've seen (still waiting for release here in the UK) but its interest for me is in its contribution to console game, not the device in itself. You might as well ask me if I'd buy a DS without the top screen.

#136635 007 Legends

Why not just wait until it hits the bargain bins. The reviews are poor and its unlikely to hold full price for long.

That's my plan. Can't justify paying full price with reviews as bad as they are, but I'm a big Bond fan so I'll probably play it eventually.

#136623 So for the final time I have to ask, should I get rid of my PS Vita?

Posted by illogicology on 23 November 2012 - 02:27 AM in General Gaming

I wouldn't. The Vita isn't doing so great, it's true, but Sony does have a good track record in supporting their systems for a long time. The PSP was getting some pretty awesome games very late into its life and if it weren't for this philosophy then the PS3 wouldn't have had its 2008-2009 revival that was really great for the console. Plus, while they're a bit thin on the ground right now, when you DO get those rare great Vita games, it's tremendous fun.

#136028 UK Video Services?

Posted by illogicology on 22 November 2012 - 05:13 AM in Wii U Hardware

Given past events, I wouldn't even count on Netflix. The iPlayer will turn up eventually no doubt, but 3DS and Vita users in the UK are still waiting for Netflix support.

Hey welcome to the forums, I'll be going to a midnight release of the Wii U at my local GAME, I've Pre Ordered a ZombiU Bundle with Assassin's Creed 3 and Tank! Tank! Tank! I did have Scribblenauts Unlimited Pre Ordered but I found out today that it's not a launch title so I canceled that one, thinking about getting Darksiders 2 or New Super Mario Bros U instead :D

Awesome, we'll have to swap IDs when the 30th rolls around.

Confession time, folks. I am not actually Gromit.

#135656 Playing original Wii games on the Wii U second screen.

Posted by illogicology on 21 November 2012 - 03:49 PM in Wii U Hardware

I don't think playing Wii games on the Gamepad really makes sense. I mean, for most Wii games you're talking about co-ordinating the Gamepad and Wii Remote which is just really awkward. Sure it would be nice if it worked for games that support the classic controller but that's really not that many games. For Virtual Console stuff there's just no excuse though. I know the Wii U's own virtual console is coming soon, but it will be quite disappointing if Nintendo expects us to buy the NES Super Mario Bros. all over again just so we don't have to play it in their fenced off little Wii Mode.

Hey folks, another European Wii U waiter here. I've got my pre-order in with Amazon so hopefully will be opening the system bright and early on the 30th. Any other folks grabbing a Wii U in the UK?
