#228023 Wii U Save Data Non-transferable, Why?

Posted by Phanto on 01 July 2013 - 03:14 PM in Wii U Games and Software

How is it overkill? It's really simple.

Overkill would be doing something aggressively like doing online checks every 24 hours.

This is passive, and will be broken if it hasn't been already so you can back up your files.

This is overkill in the sense that they are taking needless steps to hinder out experience. If there was an issue with the Wii then this would make sense. Since no hacker was able to do anything to decrypt Wii data I fail to see the reasoning behind crippling our experience as users. It's completely unwarranted.

#227948 Wii U Save Data Non-transferable, Why?

Posted by Phanto on 01 July 2013 - 10:39 AM in Wii U Games and Software

Most Wii owners are familiar with the fact that save data from your games can be transferred to an SD Card, and then onto your computer. This allows you the freedom to backup the saves to your hard drive or in the cloud. I myself have all of my Wii saves backed up on the cloud.

This is not possible on the Wii U, as the file system used to format the external USB storage devices is not recognized my most common Operating Systems (I use Ubuntu Linux and while my computer does recognize the USB device, and I can access the device, I cannot actually see any of the files. However, this could be my own systems settings and perhaps another Ubuntu user has better luck viewing files?).

I am left wondering why this is so. No one was able to crack Nintendo's encryption on the Wii downloads, such as Virtual Console titles, so why the overkill in protecting the Wii U saves? Why cripple our ability to save and share save data? This hinders my ability to share my saved game with another gamer who may have trouble beating a level that I've beaten on my save.

I have attempted to come up with a reasonable answer, like preventing piracy or maybe region locking may have something to do with it, and so far nothing really makes sense. It would appear as the only reason Nintendo have opted to cripple our user experience is for the simple fact that they can. I don't want to accept this, so maybe someone out there has a reasonable answer? How does this improve out experience as gamers? I can't backup my files to the cloud. Therefore, if my Wii U breaks and my hard drive backup crashes, then I lose everything. No cloud backup leaves me with nothing... how is that a good thing?

#227991 Wii U Save Data Non-transferable, Why?

Posted by Phanto on 01 July 2013 - 01:06 PM in Wii U Games and Software

...Unfortunately I cannot try to reformat my hard drive on my computer as it is not compatible with Windows 8.

This is where having a Linux system comes in handy. If you plug a Wii U formatted hard drive into a Linux computer it will recognize the drive and you can then format it to a Windows compatible format. So... maybe run Ubuntu Linux in a Virtual Machine on your Windows PC? That may work, but having never tried it I can't make any promises.

Also, you may want to try and format the drive using Disk Manager in Windows 8.

You can't see the files on the drive because they're using a proprietary file system format.

Most likely Fat32 with some weird crap to make it different.

It's to slow down hacks.

I know they're using a proprietary format.

If it's to slow down hacks then why wasn't this necessary on the Wii? No one hacked Virtual Console games. This is overkill.

Frankly I'd just be happy if they implemented a share method, so I can put my game saves onto a usb stick then plug it into my friend's Wii U to continue where I left off.

Actually, it'd be awesome if they can somehow put a roaming profile onto the USB drive so I can somehow play my downloaded games and access my Miiverse account on my friend's Wii U.

Yes! This is exactly what we need.

#186073 Need for Speed: Most Wanted U [Criterion 'definitive' version]

Posted by Phanto on 25 March 2013 - 07:25 AM in Wii U Games and Software

trophys make the game last longer than expected

for example two people buy a ps3 version and a wii u version, which person will sell theres quicker........ that would be the wii u gamer

I never sell my games, man. Ever. Plus, I've been playing Batman: Arkham City since it launched, I still haven't done everything there is to do, and there are no trophies or achievements on the Wii U version.

So, you're point is invalid.

Ok, confess! Which one of you took Phanto as your EA Origin Account name? Not cool, man. Not cool! I have a backup identity, but no one gets the reference of Botwoon (If you do get the reference I consider you one of the coolest Nintendo fans ever).

I rented this game a few days ago for my PS3 and loved it, would like to get the wii U version, but the PS3 trophies are pretty good.

Life isn't all about trophies. In my own humble opinion trophies and achievements are just a gimmick to get you to play the game, even if you don't really like the game. See, they know that if they dangle the carrot out in front of you, you'll just sit there and suffer through the crappy game because if you do you get the carrot. It's really, really, stupid.

Yeah....I'm not sure about this line of thinking either. So you spent $30-60 on something you probably won't enjoy just for third party support? Would you buy a candy bar you hated just because someone spent a lot of time making it and you wanted to help them? No of course not. They do it as a business and hey, its a great game and I hope you enjoy it, but thats probably not a very good reason at all to spend money on anything.

Well, actually, I would buy that candy bar. If I heard there was a candy bar company that actually put thought and effort into creating something that they thought was going to stand out and be different, then I'd be all about buying that candy bar. Those people actually showed they care about what they do. They deserve support.

I am not a fan of realistic racing games. I enojy the cartoonish weapons and mayhem too much to go without, but I will definitely be buying this game on the day it releases. Let it never be said I didn't show 3rd party devs support for their hard work and effort to release a quality Wii U title.

...I may even play this game a few times.

#184629 Need for Speed: Most Wanted U [Criterion 'definitive' version]

Posted by Phanto on 20 March 2013 - 01:53 PM in Wii U Games and Software

I purchased this game today, and it is being shipped to my local store for pick-up (free shipping that way). I am very glad to support this developer, even though I'm not really a fan of this series. They have put so much effort into this title that there is no way I was going to NOT reward their efforts.

Hopefully I have a few minutes of fun when I finally bring it home. :-) This purchase was all about supporting a developer who actually cares, and not really much else. Here's hoping that voting with my wallet pays off.

Just got my copy, had a quick look and compared it to the PS3 demo, looks noticeably better to me, much better anti-aliasing/less jaggies and much sharper looking. I'll be giving it a good blast later tonight.

I could look this up through Google, but I'd rather just ask someone here. Are there any online features?

#181905 Nintendo E3 2013 Lineup

Posted by Phanto on 12 March 2013 - 07:46 AM in Wii U Games and Software

I am looking forward to everything you listed, and I'm hoping for a few surprises. I know it's not a good idea to get too excited, because two E3 conferences in a row have been huge let-downs, but I can't help it.

I just want Nintendo to finally show us what an amazing year they have planned for us!

#176750 What is Retro Studios Working on?

Posted by Phanto on 26 February 2013 - 03:36 PM in Wii U Games and Software

The fact that "stylized" graphics were mentioned scares me. When Nintendo did a cartoonish Zelda I was 100% on board. That universe fits the sylized cartoonish look very well, but when you start talking about a cartoonish Metroid game, you've lost me. The Metroid franchise just works best with realistic graphics, and an epic story.

If Retro is working on a Metroid game, and it turns out to be a "stylized" game, I will have a very hard time justifying the purchase. I will probably buy it and I might even enjoy it, but unless they can really impress me with gameplay/story I will find it hard to get past the cartoonish look.

#182013 PS4 launch=Wii U price cut?

Posted by Phanto on 12 March 2013 - 01:24 PM in Wii U Hardware

I don't want to see a price cut. Not for at lest three years or so...

What? I spent hard-earned cash on my Wii U, and I don't need Nintendo to devalue it so close to launch. That money took a lot of effort to earn, dagnabbit.

#220270 Nintendo E3= Disappointing?

Posted by Phanto on 12 June 2013 - 09:24 AM in E3 2013 Archive

I am buying a PS4. Now, that doesn't mean I'm abandoning my Wii U. My plan is that when a multiplatform title is coming to both PS4 and Wii U, I will purchase the Wii U version exclusively. The PS4 is for all the exclusive titles Nintendo won't be getting.

#219776 Nintendo E3= Disappointing?

Retro lied about doing a game people wanted them to, no one wanted another donkey kong

I did! And I can't wait to play this new adventure. Speak for yourself, man.

#209547 Xbox 720 Official Reveal Thread

Posted by Phanto on 21 May 2013 - 10:59 AM in General Gaming

it's strange to me that people seem to decide what they are buying before they even know anything about it.

I have to agree. It doesn't make much sense.

#210016 No Hate - But People Are Taking Another Look @ Wii U

This is definitely not what I was expecting, but I'm very glad that this is the way things have turned out.

#141416 Where the crap is sonic?

Posted by Phanto on 01 December 2012 - 08:44 AM in Wii U Games and Software

Well, as far as I'm concerned, there hasn't been a great Sonic game since Sonic the Hedgehog 3. I attribute that to the fact the original Sonic Team doesn't even exist anymore. To be perfectly honest I would much rather not have any new Sonic games until Sonic Team can really give us something amazing.

But that is just my own opinion on the matter. I'm sure if Sonic Team put together something like Sonic Generations on the Wii U then people would buy it. I like Sonic Generations just fine. It was actually a pretty good game, but it wasn't perfect by any means. I'd probably buy a sequel if they made one.

You know what else concerns me about these modern Sonic titles? Eggman. I hate that name. Hate it! I call him Dr. Robotnik. He will always be Dr. Robotnik. Death to Eggman!

#217033 NINTENDO E3 2012- Your Speculation!

Posted by Phanto on 07 June 2013 - 08:31 AM in Wii U Games and Software

With only days left until Nintendo's E3 presence, I hope for only two things:

1. Announcement of Pokemon Scramble U to be released in North America, Europe and other regions. Hopefully a release date as well.

2. More information on Yarn Yoshi.

#242986 Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze box art revealed!

Posted by Phanto on 30 August 2013 - 08:14 AM in Wii U Games and Software

You know what? I'm actually very much looking forward to this game, and I think what has sparked that is this box art. It reminds me of Donkey Kong Country 3, for the Super Nintendo.

Definitely some good box art. :-)

#218456 Ubisoft Press Conference

Posted by Phanto on 10 June 2013 - 01:14 PM in E3 2013 Archive

I don't know if this is really worth watching. Any chance we'll see some Wii U titles? EA conference was pretty bland and pointless... except for a few things sprinkled throughout.

#172768 Amazing Spider Man Wii U March 5th

Posted by Phanto on 18 February 2013 - 01:34 PM in Wii U Games and Software

As I am 100% in support of any 3rd party release, I will be buying the game as soon as it launches. I don't even care if it turns out to be a bad port. I'm just giving 3rd party Wii U devs my support.
