This is great list and Id love to dive in a little deeper.
The system launched without a real 'next gen' value proposition compared to existing competition. This is only based on launch games.
- This is true. When we look into it further, we start to see why. Nintendo released a next gen system, capable of captivating the core gamer, people who want a system powerful enough to do more with franchises like Zelda, 64/sunshine/galaxy style mario, Metroid, New IP's along these lines, capable of giving a mentally stimulating adventure of epic proportions.
ANd then they proceeded to completely ignore this audience.
They ignored this audience for the 120 million wii/ds audience.... Who bought the wii and ds because they liked the simplistic fun, of a non demanding, non investive gameplay experience, and they didnt care diddly squat about graphics.
But wait, thas audience doesnt care about system power increases, which was the entire selling point and reason for existance of the wii u. Whoops. These people only wanted a simple, non challenging, non demanding, time wasters that require no mental investment, something they can now get for 'free' through a device they need to have for personal/work life. A mobile phone.
Meanwhile, Nintendo is devoting 90% of its time and resources to an audience that will never come over, while completely ignoring the audience that bought the wii u for what it could do for real games.
Third parties were given the floor, like with the 3ds, yet failed to deliver.
-Surprise, surprise. Unprecendented partnerships indeed.
Advertising was confusing and delayed until quality software was available.
-Advertising is still 'confusing', barely anyone outside the internet knows what a wii u is. And the quality software is just not enough.
If you look at the split between games like Nintendo land, or nsmbwu, or nsmb3dw, or wii fit, games meant to attract the casual crowd whos scared of deeper gaming experiences, vs say, pikmin 3, or tw101, you will find damn near a 10-1 split in favor of people who have moved on to cell phones.
Just imagine, IMAGINE, if Nintendo had decided to say, make a 50-50 split instead. Every game, of every genre you like currently on wii u, would have 2-3 more games for you to play RIGHT NOW.
The looming PS4/Xbone launch created a 'Dreamcast' effect.-I cant even give this one to nintendo. Nintendo did this to themselves. If they had come out prepared for this, prepared for the Nintendo faithful, instead of ignoring them, We would have first gen first gen Zelda's (remember how much launching with a zelda helped wii?), then BAM pikmin 3, then BAM tw101, bam metroid, oh no, maybe some downtime? BAM hd rerelease of windwaker, bam mario kart, bam smash.
Nobody would give a crap about ps4/xbones pathetic launch line up, because they were being SATISFIED, except the ones who were going to buy one no matter what.
Instead, Nintendo has a starving pissed off customer/fanbase tired of being ignored for no shows.
Quality software debuted when the market was gearing up for the launches of the other systems.
-True, and still, not nearly enough. Nintendo was still downplaying games for people who like investing their time in videogames, in favor of people who just want to waste some time, at a ratio of about 10-1.
Said software has a split priority-Wii Fit/Sports/Play/etc. were never going to drive the install base that has moved on to other formats.
-Oh, you... you... E-hug.
Man, any attempts at using almost any manner of formatting are just not working out for me today.
It is impossible to disagree with anything on this list. A trend is very similar to the product life cycle. The Wii had a great introduction and growth stage. At the maturity stage, or rather, at the end of the growth stage, you had Move and Kinect enter the market. The Wii entered the maturity stage, and Kinect became the new 'it' thing. Then we had the decline of the Wii's casual trend appeal, which went quickly (it seemed like watching Sony's copy again in reference to the rate of decline). Kinect also declined, or rather, the trend died.
You, very astutely, pointed out that the audience for games like Rusty's Baseball do not want a dedicated game machine. They also do not want the experiences we want (Assault Android Cactus is my idea of QOL improvement). You hammered the nail on the head. I have another post quoted from you below, which shares similarity with other comments I intended to make here.
I don't 100% agree with all these statements. Specifically, the statement that Nintendo is focusing on the casual gamer. I would argue, that they haven't been focusing on any market and that explains why we don't have any ads. They don't know who to target.
At least, that's how I see it
Personally, I think they predicted an 'Iphone effect'. Casuals buy it to have the latest version, and core gamers do the same to have the latest and greatest. Children get it for Mario, and everyone makes money.
The evidence is in the lack of reinvestment in R&D. Six years with the Wii and they are having trouble with HD graphics. I think it is more like the belief of having more time being built into the strategy, combined with the thought of an instant, large, install base generating a similar out pouring of third party support in the first year.
This is the result of 'misreading the market'.
Maybe, if you are looking at advertising. But since they basically HAVE nothing to look at in that department, if you look at the games instead, you will find for every game like say, pikmin 3, or the wonderful 101, you will find 10 games like nintendo land, or nsmbu, or wii fit or wii party or just dance etc.
Its pretty obvious who they were targeting.
You can also tell by the demographics they cater to in their overall corporate strategy. A game like Mario will get tons of promotion. Wii Fit got a forced free trial (in the download sense). Meanwhile, Wonderful 101 is sent to die.
Also, the online infrastructure and eshop design is laid out for the same person that uses the Itunes store. Well, my a dumber version of that person.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[45]
Dr. Luigi
nes remix 1 and 2
game and wario
Just dance wii u - Yes, this was published by Nintendo, so, this one is on the list, though whether you add just dance 2014, and just dance kids is up to you.
Mario and sonic at the olympic games
New super mario bros u
New super luigi bros u
Nintendo land
Sing party
Pokemon rumble U
Super mario 3d world (yes, it is a 2d mario, just in 3d, it appeals to the simplistic, easily intimidated 2d mario players, as anyone waiting for an entry in an actual 3d mario style game will quickly tell you)
Wii fit u
Wii party u
Wii kareoke U
Wii sports club U
oh yeah... its just 2 games. Oh wait. No its not. The wii u is a veritable clogged toilet overflowing with party games, singing games, mini game collections, 2d sidescrollers, and other casual fare.
When you add in 3rd parties, what little 3rd party we have, the ratio gets much, much worse.
90% of the titles available on the system, offer nothing attractive whatsoever, to the people who own a wii u, or who WOULD own a wii u.
That last 10% is FANTASTIC quality stuff. But even if it was the greatest game ever made, it cant be expected to be replayed over and over and over again for the next year or two straight and keep someone happily satisfied. Its just not possible.
Which is the EXACT situation wii u owners are in. RIGHT NOW.
However, f you take that gigantic list most of which was casual garbage no one bought, and split it in half, all of the sudden, those wii u owners have 3-4x the games to play through over the next year or two, instead of a gigantic pile of NOTHING.
We know of MK 8, Smash, X, Bayonetta, DK TF, Yarn Yoshi, and Fire Emblem (if it isn't canceled). There may be more, but that is all I know of (and the plethora of indie games that be awesome (Shovel Knight!). Oh, and Sonic Boom, which looks like Uncharted: Sonic to me.
Seven games. However, they all will not be out this year. Realistically, we see 5 of these. I am in complete agreement with your point, as Metroid, Star Fox, Wave Race, Battalion Wars, etc. goes on the back burner to fund the casual stuff you describe. Imagine if Wii U was the must have accessory console. It would be with what your describing.

I believe the Wii U's problems are obviously tied to the success of the Wii, or rather, Nintendo's thinking that the same core strategy could work again. However, if we break this down a little more, and in no particular order:
- The system launched without a real 'next gen' value proposition compared to existing competition. This is only based on launch games.
- Third parties were given the floor, like with the 3ds, yet failed to deliver.
- Advertising was confusing and delayed until quality software was available.
- The looming PS4/Xbone launch created a 'Dreamcast' effect.
- Quality software debuted when the market was gearing up for the launches of the other systems.
- Said software has a split priority-Wii Fit/Sports/Play/etc. were never going to drive the install base that has moved on to other formats.
Nintendo drastically misjudged the market. Their conservative nature prevents them from making knee jerk reactions, and this has paid off (do a current ratio from their recent financials to laugh off this Nintendo is doomed nonsense).
I hope 2014 is about the gamer. QOL can mean many things. People assume it means more fitness games. However, as we see with the Rusty Baseball IP, it can mean many different things (good feelings through software interaction).
Now that the PS4 and Xbone are out, I actually think Nintendo may have a better chance with the Wii U. The hardcore market was probably presuming a Wii-360 gap in power, combined with shovelware support.

You might be but me and many others aren't. I don't know what games you got or what you are even remotely interested in but I bought my WiiU last april with MH3U, well that's the only game I didn't like and resold a few weeks ago. But I still need to finish ZombiU, have had loads of fun in the MP. Got TTT2 just so I could lay with my bro. I just finished my second playthrough off Pikmin 3 and only got 1 platinum medal in mission mode so I got a long ways to go. I'm playing WWHD for the second time and on hero mode. I still have to get into CoD Ghosts online MP. I got to 100% Rayman Legends. The only games I haven't touched in a while are Sing Party, AC:III and the Batman games.
I might not play every day but I games wise I'm no where near bored. That's the whole reason I skipped on buying 3D world, I hope that by May I got some time on my hands to play MK8.
Oh god no...just...my heart...can't take...
LOL. Just having fun.
See everyone, this guy is playing games as intended. A reasonable backlog with a full intent to enjoy each purchase.
Remember when we all did this? Before we discarded a game after being led through a glorified interactive movie, we would get everything out of these titles that we could.

Not to be an apologist or anything, but they started and stopped the game play at precisely the same time.
I am not seeing the big deal.
Plus it was one level. With tweaks to the interface...
Apparently this is too far over my head to be relevant.

Nintendo's problem is that they have a lot more franchises but aren't prepared to use them. Iwata has said Nintendo's target market is children and families i.e. casual gamers, therefore games like Star Fox, Fzero and Metroid are probably not really on their radar when these games along with games like Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart will help shift units.
Furthermore Nintendo needs to get to grips with the fact that third party developers and publishers want nothing to do with Nintendo and who can blame them when Nintendo seems to isolate themselves from the rest of the industry. Microsoft and Sony turn up to E3, Nintendo? Nah they'll deliver a pre-recorded Nintendo Direct rather then turn up in person to the largest show in the games industry calendar.
I agree with you. If you have limited funds, it would only make sense to buy the system that has what you want to play right now, and what is coming on the horizon.
Right now, if a primarily Mario-only fan looks at the Wii-U, he has a great selection. Action game fans have a great game, and one other coming. The PS4/Bone do not really have this mega strong line up, but people know the games are coming.
Anyway, if you are that Zelda fan, you have probably played Windwaker. Do you spend $300 on a Wii U, or do you drop $400 on the PS4 now, and pick up the Wii U later, when the price drops?
I think the mass market, the one buying these machines for software first, sees it this way. If your not buying software, the Xbone is fantastic in the living room, but way too overpriced for what it is good at.

-snip-
People just don't want Nintendo's hardware, they want Nintendo's software but are not prepared to buy Nintendo home console hardware to play those great first party games on.
The problem is that the overall cumulative effect of Nintendo's software is not really as enticing as it seems to Joe Schmoe. In other words, You have situations where someone likes Mario, but they do not care for Zelda.
A large variety is required, as the people playing Mario will buy similar games, like Rayman Legends, yet these people will not give Assault Android Cactus a chance. The FPS crowd is like this. They may like Zelda, but they do not like it enough to buy a Zelda machine.
People like us are really a smaller segment of the market than those that will buy one system for a few years because it offers variety in their genre of choice.

When unexpected, I, too, get angry when someone knocks on the door. Most of the time it ends up talking to jehova's witness, jewish and other idiots bothering me with the most random crap. At some point I just stopped answering.
I have a different problem with B2B sales people. Mostly benefit coordinators. I take the non-violent approach of setting up a meeting and nagging them with endless questions. Of course, I will schedule these meetings on 'dead' days. I find this funny. Of course, I am also the person to put the new guy's stapler in Jello or fasten a bullhorn under a co-worker's chair.
I love the religious people though. They are perplexed when I question them about my (fictional) drug and sex addictions. I pretend we are on the Ali G show when they knock on my door.

If this was a professional company they wouldn't have taken such obvious jabs at Ubisoft and EA. It's simply not professional. I'm calling either a fake, of a decent to bad indie game
It is not professional per say, but it is great marketing. If I was making a game as an indie developer, my advertising budget would probably be my time away from making the game (I would presume these guys do not have much equity on the balance sheet).
So, this rant gets their name out there in a viral fashion, and we do the work for them.
Plus, if you had low overhead, a great game, and a viral campaign, you would have a very ripe market for a higher tier indie title, exclusively on Wii U.

I never liked sonic... never understood the draw to him or the games. Sonic Boom will be the first sonic game on a home console (got generations for my son 3ds) that i purchase. What Sega are trying to do is connect with the western audience. I feel Nintendo needs to do this with one of their IP's (Starfox, Zelda, new ip, shooter). I dont think you do this trying to hit a home run (10 million in sales out the gate). You do it to show you can step out your box and do something that you dont usually do. Sega got a VERY experienced Dev team to make it, got it running on one of the best engines for pushing tech, and I praise them for that. This is what people have been asking Nintendo to "try" for years. Give us something new. Who in here would not play a starfox, metroid, or new exclusive shooter on Wii U built on cryengine, made by an "experienced western dev? It would just be to have something new. Another thing is Sega has their main sonic team in tack working on a mainline sonic game this game is like a spin-off of sorts and I think its pretty cool what they are doing. DAY 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will have to say that I agree in one aspect-attempting to connect to western audiences. I feel like this should be through software, hardware, and through value-added mechanisms (unified accounts, online ecosystems, etc.).
It looks like Nintendo designs a system for Japan, and only then tries to bring it overseas. So, from a top down level, I completely agree.
From a software standpoint, allow us to look at the Prime series, and how Metroid was handled well, and how it fell apart when it attempted to reach a western audience (Other M).
Metroid Prime was a work of art, and I strongly believe, had the ability to use online multiplayer been implemented, it could have done better (I do not want this, but some do, and this would have been the game to do it with-imagine space pirates vs bounty hunters).
Other M was a movie, with Samus as a weaker protagonist. Oh, and and those darn pixel hunts. By 'movie', of course I mean, the addition of voice acting made the product come off as something more aimed at a western audience.
So, I wish Nintendo could fix the bigger picture, and make games with the ELEMENTS that western gamers find attractive without losing the things that make Nintendo unique.

The share buy backs simply allow Nintendo to be more at ease in calling all the shots without worrying about hostile takeovers, investor retaliation, etc.
No doubt they've heard of a guy named Carl Icahn who likes to sweep in, invest billions, profit from untimely share buybacks (which he pressures the board to do), and leave companies devastated in his wake -while he profits handsomely.
Much like EA profits from liquidizing game dev studios.
Nintendo IS hurting. They aren't going anywhere soon, but they are smarting from this generation console. They are erecting protective barriers now. Very smart.
Buying back the shares doesn't profit them financially until they sell them again. This is their second recent buy back and they are not doing it for money. It's for security.
This way they can still be allowed to take risks (necessary for any company worth existing) and not have to worry about short term knee-jerk reactions.
It's a reason to trust the company -even if they seem to be finding their way blindfolded (blue tinted of course)at the moment.
Thank you for illustrating the effects of share buybacks. The proxy war comment was there to suggest Nintendo having more leverage to pursue whichever strategy it saw fit. Of course, share repurchases will naturally drive up demand, and thus the share price.
My point-Nintendo holds their cards to their chest. It would be foolish to enter this meeting with specifics. Right now, the speculation is of a traditional sense-fitness, learning, Skylanders-type products, and so forth.
I would presume that there will be something dramatically different when speaking of QOL and 'health' in particular.
The share buybacks offer the security you suggest, through leverage, when these original concepts come out. I do not expect great reception at first.

Mergers usually are done with like companies. That would be Sega. And it's a perfect fit. They should also acquire Platinum already. Serious talent there.
But Nintendo also needs to recapture their old image-where they WERE gaming. People looked to Nintendo as a hardcore gaming company.
A merger and/or a series of acquisitions may be the shot across the bow that the world needs to reset their minds on the company.
The "blue Ocean" Nintendo speaks of is already I festered with bigger, better predators.
http://bits.blogs.ny...type=blogs&_r=0
http://www.fitbit.com
http://store.nike.co...nike fuelband 2
And health apps/games/etc are too many to list.
Can't see Nintendo competing here.
Wii fit started the craze. Wii u fit hardly seems a worthy upgrade and even xbox one has a worthy fitness game competitor.
Wish Nintendo would focus and what they are good at.
I'm seeing Iwata just not understanding why the Wii U has not picked up traction.
Seems like he's grasping.
Hopefully, he doesn't invest too much in this blue ocean health arena. Because Iwata may be colorblind. That ocean ain't blue, neither in software nor hardware.
You are right. However, I am presuming the presentation was so general, and it covered a lot in scope, that the overall 'health' concept could be wrapped around something else.
I am hoping that this meeting, and the reference to the Blue Ocean Strategy, was a mechanism to calm investors and throw off competition.
I mean, share buy-backs can also give you more leverage in a proxy war.

The only thing they can do is focus on their main market. They need to give people like us what we want, and ignore the desire of importing the Wii/fad audience from their phones and tablets.
Essentially, the only way to 'turn the Wii U around' is to reduce the cost of sales and make it profitable while at the same time building a steady base for the next console. At the same time, add to what they have with regard to online and for god's sake, listen to developers for the next iteration.
Anyway, the Wii U needs Metroid, F-Zero, Earthbound, and any other IP that will appeal to the hardcore market. The Wii Fit's are fine, but they are obviously not the bread and butter of the market, as the 7 million plus PS4/Xbone's show us.
The machine will not be able to directly compete with the PS4 or Xbone unless they can get the install base buying the software from third parties.
I guess I am saying that the Wii U will need to be a must have for a large number of exclusives. A large portion of the cash reserve may be needed for reinvestment in order to remain relevant in the console space at this point (provided the mass number of games do not hit their targets).

A Christian here, but, if I am wrong, I suppose the afterlife will be experienced the same way I experienced the earth during the middle ages. Or during WW 2. Perhaps the same way it was when I was experiencing the Great Depression. I am 28 today, so let me put it in perspective, everything before this day in 1986 is how it will be after death. Emotion comes in to change that, yet I am positive the experience is the same if you cease to exist.

Not everyone is a hardcore gamer. COD is the epitome of most people's gaming exposure and advertising dollars play a lot into that. Also two COD games are usually in the top selling every year, as it releases late in November anyway.
Exactly! The second sentence feeds the first.
Not everyone was a hardcore gamer playing SMB in 1986. Same for those playing Star Fox in 1993. Ditto with Mario 64 in 1996. Same again with MGS in 1998. The original Halo brought something new in 2001, which had people playing DOA 3 along side it. Even 2005-2007 brought us Mario Galaxy, the first Crysis, and, unfortunately, COD 4 (at this point something novel).
Since then, it has been a race to singularity. Almost like 2014's version of pong and space invaders with different skins.

This is crazy. If you look at the top 10 selling games across the US, UK, and Japan, you can correlate 2013 to a bad year. The USA, sigh, has 2 COD games on the list. TWO! The UK, while slightly different, mirrors similar concepts that also work well in the USA.
Japan is different, yet would you, as a publisher, focus on that market or the larger territories? Do we have data from a company that tried to? Wait, we do, and they are going to lose hundreds of millions of dollars.
2013 sucked for the first two top 10 lists, as the trend will continue. Play virtual paintball, dance like a prick, buy sequel number 39, but do not support originality in this industry.
Look at the top 10 cross-platform sellers of the year for the US (http://segmentnext.c...g-game-2013-us/):

6. NBA 2K14

8. Just Dance 2014
9. Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition

I've slept on it a night but I have to say that if this was the case I wouldn't bother with Nintendo anymore. When I buy a console or a game I don't want to be limited in my activities. I don't want an 'incomplete' console for €99 and then having to pay another €200 just so I can play normally, the same with games.
The ad thing works, but it works on mobiles and why. On my iPad I don't mind ads during my play session, as it is only 5-10 minutes long. Because these are so short I don't bother with getting the full game as the ads are just there in the bottom and don't intterupt my game. An console is designed for long play session, this would mean that during my 4 hour play session I would get in total 12 ads of 30s to a minute long. Not only does it break your sense of emerging but that wait time is also deadly in multiplayergames like CoD. I'd get increasingly annoyed up to the point I'd drop the system and I think most of the (cassual)gamers would feel the same.
This makes sense-presuming it was done like that. I would hope that there would be an annoying, yet unobtrusive, bar across the bottom of the screen with ads, and a dedicated section on the homepage. Almost newspaper style. Something annoying enough to make people like us want to buy in, yet not so bad for the impulse crowd (I refuse to play those phone games-I have not tried one yet that was not concentrated garbage).
The market appears to be going in that direction, at least substantially enough to where an expensive home console will be back to a core fanbase (think gen 6).
Nintendo is going to have to do something radical to compete for that core market at this point (the steps are listed elsewhere). I cannot think of a better way than for a low cost value proposition, or mass market trojan horse to earn revenue without actually needing to make sales.

Great video. The biggest dilemma facing the economy is to be found in low consumer confidence and capital reinvestment occurring outside of this country.
The minimum wage argument is tricky. $10.10 will be the new $7.25 due to inflation, just at the $3 trillion in bond buying by the Fed will lead to rapid inflation if it leaves banks at a quick pace. However, everyone is working and they can handle it, presumably.
The failed premise in this video is the disregarding of risk. If I work for a company, increase in productivity, earn 3x (for the company) than what I am paid, but have no associated risks, how am I going to complain?
Do I deserve 3x the money, effectively leaving the shareholders with the overhead burden and profit-less? That is nice of them for assuming all of the risk for me.

Ever played a Zyinga game?
I have watched people play them, and I never thought the ads were too intrusive. Let me flesh this out a little:
You buy a Wii U for $99.00 flat with ad support at retail. You then either pay the $200 difference at retail to receive an unlock code tied to your NNID and console, and you have no ads. Games at retail are full price (no getting around this with discs and cases, and shelf space has to be factored in).
The games on the eshop are $0-10 dollars for every AAA, honest to goodness console game. The ads would be annoying, like an interruption between 20 minutes of playtime for this version. Almost like a limited commercial break.
HOWEVER...you can pay MSRP at the store or on the eshop for the full game and skip the ads altogether.
I saw Ouya being brought up, but this would be a little different, as Ouya would not really have the reach that Nintendo could have. Imagine, a Console and handheld within impulse range for many people (OK, credit card impulse range), with a flood of publishers eager to make ad revenue. Nintendo makes money every time the machine turns on. Alternatively, people like us pay full price.
Point being, the ads would not need to be obtrusive. Purist will keep buying. The people who bite at $99 will probably make enough ad revenue in some cases to buy 3 or 4 consoles.

Could you elaborate? This is a good idea but poor execution would kill it. It would annoy people to death and it makes Nintendo seem like douche bags in the long run

Where has he said he hates platformers? I thought he hated the overabundance of them over the other stuff available elsewhere?
