And because it is even worse the the name Wii. Why Nintendo Why do you insist on these names?
Nintendo explained this a while ago. Look at the Letters.
Wii
It symbolizes "We", as in together we'll play, and the "i"'s are meant to resemble 2 people playing a game.
And that's where the "U" comes in, meaning that the original Wii was about playing with friends and family, while the Wii U is all about... Well... You as the player and how the system is tailored for the individual. (i.e. the gamepad can't really be shared at the same time you' re playing a game and still be fun, just like a portable console.)
