#140766 Invalid Disc?

Posted by mayhem13 on 30 November 2012 - 01:09 AM in Wii U Hardware

Thanks for the replies and advice. I'll give it a try if it happens again. There is a forum discusson on Nintendo Of America's official forum. It's not normal, but it is happening to some people infrequently. According to the people on the forums, advice from the official Nintendo customer support ranged from the pull the plug for awhile method. To sending the system in for repair. I always hate errors that are infrequent only because they are hard to diagnose and repair. What if you send the machine to Nintendo, they can't replicate the problem. They send it back with a clean bill of health and then it does the error again once you have it back. At least constant errors or obvious problems are there and easier to diagnose and fix.

Nonetheless, I'll try not to worry for now.

#140234 Invalid Disc?

Posted by mayhem13 on 29 November 2012 - 05:10 AM in Wii U Hardware

Has anyone had their machine start giving Invalid Disc errors. This is more troubling then the freezing as the freezing can be easily fixed. Invalid read errors are likely due to hardware issues with the disc drive.

First let me say that when I got my Wii U, it never gave me invalid disc errors on Wii or Wii U games. Suddenly two nights ago. I got one playing my new Call Of Duty Black Ops 2 video game. The disc was clean and inserted properly. In fact it was only the second time I had put the game in the system. So I took it out, put it back in. This time, it wouldn't even recognize the disc. Took it out again put it back in, this time it read perfectly, started up and played. So I thought, ok, maybe the disc is bad.

Then today, I go to play Nintendoland which has played perfect since I got the system. Invalid Disc. Took it out, reinserted it and this time it played properly.

That tells me, the problem isn't the discs and since they were working fine for about a week, it doesn't appear to be the menu or firmware. It seems very likely to be a faulty drive. My concern is if I am getting this now after having the unit less then two weeks. What will happen in 3 months. Will I totally lose the ability to read discs.

This is very disheartening, I really liked the Wii U and the games I played, I liked the GamePad. I felt it was a good system aside from the freezing issues that I had three times since getting the unit. But a system with a broken/faulty disc drive. That's far worse. That's a worthless unit.

So I'm just asking has anyone else had this problem? I saw one video on youtube which is exactly what I'm experiencing, it shows the picture of the game in the disc channel. But says Invalid Disc instead of showing the title. I also notice that if I leave the disc in the drive. Turn off the unit and then turn on the unit later. I have a much greater chance of getting this invalid disc error.

Anyone else, any info?

#139514 Gamepad Analog Stick Problems

Posted by mayhem13 on 28 November 2012 - 02:20 AM in Wii U Hardware

The problem is the analog sticks are actually too precise and sensitive. Things like switching through menus and simple controls will be affected because there is no room for error. But playing a game like Black Ops 2 on the Wii U with a Wii U GamePad will probably feel better then playing it on a 360 with a 360 controller which has great analog sticks that aren't over-precise or over-sensitive. They feel just right for everything. Of course this is a matter of opinion and taste. Most people want more precision in a game like Black Ops 2. You want room for error when navigating menus. You simply can't have both. One or the other. Very unlikely that it will be fixed, that is the way it is. You'll probably just have to get used to it. Or use the touchscreen to select items. The D-Pad is also very accurate without being over-precise. Thats a good option for the menu screens.

If something is legitimately wrong with your GamePad, the only way to know wether your gamepad needs repair/replacement or not. Is to try another gamepad and see if it is the same way. If it is. All those gamepads are alike. You just aren't a fan of it. If yours gives you trouble, but the other gamepad is fine. Then maybe your gamepad has a problem. But I have the same thing, where if I try navigating through menus with the analog stick. It goes all over the place...too sensitive. I just use the D-Pad or touchscreen.
Not to mention the human factor, some people's hands are steady, others are shaky or jerky. That'll effect it too. Some people right now may be reading this right now and say, I think it feels fine, I have no problem with it. They may be very accurate with their handling of the analog sticks. Everyone is a little different in how they operate things and also what they consider acceptable and what they consider to be a problem.

#136086 THQ clarifies 4A's comment on CPU

Posted by mayhem13 on 22 November 2012 - 07:31 AM in Wii U Hardware

THQ is bleeding money and they fund the developers the cash to make the game. If Zombi U, Black Ops 2, Creed III, etc etc. Sell well on the Wii U. You'll see THQ take the risk and fund a Metro Last Light port. It'll probably be released late. But it will be released, especially if Metro Last Light sells well in its own right. No point in releasing a Wii U port if the game bombs. The team excuse doesn't work because you can always lend out the game to another team to handle the port. Like I say, it falls on two main fronts. THQ is suffering and Nintendo has a history of poor third party sales, especially mature titles. So THQ isn't going to waste money making a port to a system that hasn't proven anyone would even buy it. They'll lose money if they do. They don't have anymore money to lose.

#136080 Wii U 'Has A Horrible, Slow CPU' Says Metro Last Light Dev

Posted by mayhem13 on 22 November 2012 - 07:25 AM in Wii U Hardware

Like anything if effort is put into making the game, you'll get a good port. Maybe it won't be better then the 360/PS3 version. Maybe it will be better in spots and weaker in other places. But the fact is, you do need to put some effort into it. Don't forget with the PS3, it had this rediculously powerful CELL processor. 90% of the games for the system barely take advantage of it. Because many developers claim it is too difficult to figure out or use. So they use it in a very basic way. The end result were games that looked as good or maybe just a tad bit less then the 360 version. Well...there is an example of an extremely powerful processor that no one wanted to develop for properly beyond a few companies. But they still did. So like I say, all the time, if the money is there. The port will be there. For the money to be there, the games must sell for the system.

Shame of it is...if you want a system to sell and games to sell for it. You need good third party support. Well alot of third party support is afraid to support the Wii U because of poor video game sales on the Wii. So it plays against Nintendo. Third party needs to see that the Wii U can sell third party games before they'll be willing to risk an attempt at making their game. So hope that Black Ops 2 and Zombi U sells like crazy. Because that is what is going to get those third party companies who are not commited to the Wii U to reconsider. Rockstar doesn't care how well Mario sells, they want to see how well a violent game sells, before they consider making their violent game for that system.

Nintendo has a long history of weak third party support. The last Nintendo console that had truly great third party support was the Super Nintendo. N64 as great as it was lacked good third party. Gamecube was a little better but still far behind Xbox and PS2. Wii obviously had horrible third party support. It's an uphill climb for Nintendo as far as the third party thing goes.

I know I keep bringing up third party when the thread is about CPU processing and the comments of a developer or two. But the thing is...If the Wii U was like the 360/PS3 and video games sold well on it. All these third party companies would make a port on the Wii U. They'd want the money. It's all about money. The CPU processing excuse is just a way for them to defend not releasing games on the system. Its not cool to say, "we want to make money". People don't sympathize with that. So they say, oh, the CPU is not 100% to our liking. Thus that is the reason for not making a Wii U version. No it's not, it's because you saw that third party mature Wii games sold like crap and now you want an excuse that you can give to the public without coming across as greedy. That applies to any third party companies excuse.

So to make it simple as far as these "hardcore" mature games go from third party companies: if the sales are there, the money is there. If the money is there, the third party is there.

#136064 Wii U freezing problem...

Posted by mayhem13 on 22 November 2012 - 06:51 AM in Wii U Hardware

Freezing is both normal and harmful in this day and age. Of course there will always be those few people that don't have any trouble (some are lying, some are honest). I mean there can be so many causes of freezing, if you were getting ready to get an RROD with the old Xbox 360's. Freezing would start becoming more common before the RROD actually occured. 360/PS3 were not above freezing due to games (Fallout 3 anyone...I love that game but it freezes alot in comparison to others). PS3 even froze during the menu from time to time for me. Wii froze, it was less likely but it did. Also some units had weak lasers the discs would give disc read errors. Thats not technically freezing though. At this point, its a combination of all this rediculously powerful technology, giant games that make glitches so much more common. Also, an over reliance on updates/patches. Why make sure the game/system is bug free when you can just patch it to be bug free over time and rush it to release. I wish systems weren't as freeze happy and games weren't as bug filled, but it is common place now. If you don't like it, stop playing games. That's the only answer. PC is no better, lots of bugs in games, hence why every game is almost guarenteed at least one patch. Really not surprising, I mean more and more video game consoles are becoming like computers. Computer games have always been a little fragile even with a powerful PC. Required patches to make the game more stable. So if a console is alot like a PC now. Is it surprising that those consoles and games need patches/updates now too. It's just the way it is. This is modern day gaming.

#136053 Slow CPU Will Shorten Wii U's Life - DICE Dev

Posted by mayhem13 on 22 November 2012 - 06:30 AM in Wii U Hardware

All these clown developers (and their big mouths) are doing is essentially giving out their early reason why they aren't making games for the Wii U....yet This is a front. The real reason they aren't releasing games for the Wii U is because they are still petrified from the horrible third party sales of the original Wii. They are worried that the Wii U will be the same way. They don't have confidence in Wii U to sell their game. If The Wii U can prove good GAME sales (more important then CONSOLE sales to third party companies). These developers will suddenly and quietly support the Wii U. Because they want money like anyone else. Don't forget PS3 started out with fairly poor console sales. But video games on the system sold well regardless. Whatever amount of people that had the system bought the games first party or third party at good sales. On the flipside, The Wii as a console had tremendous sales, and no one bought any non-Nintendo games third party games. Third Party companies only care about money these days. So even when the PS3 was ailing and the Wii was thriving. They still would rather make a game on a system that could actually sell their game. It's common sense. As far as the Wii U and the slow CPU. Hey...if your a GOOD developer. You can make a good port of a game on anything. If it isn't equal to the 360 or PS3 version, you can at least make it close. You know Mortal Kombat 2 was a game made for the arcades, then ported to many systems of the time included the Nintendo Gameboy. Could a system be anymore different then the arcades, then a Nintendo Gameboy? But they did it anyway....why? Money, gameboy games sold. All Wii U has to do, is sell games. If it does that, third party companies will come around and release their games. If it doesn't, Wii U will be just like the Wii. We'll get good Nintendo first party games and alot of crappy budget kiddie games from the third party. Its so simple, it's hard for people to understand I guess.

You know overall the Wii U's launch lineup isn't much different from the Wii's. Look at who supported the Wii on launch Ubisoft, Activision, EA, Sega. Maybe the quality of games is better. But the same companies that supported the Wii, are still supporting the Wii U. That's great. Nintendo needs to get back the rest now. They need Bethesda, they need Valve, they need 2K, they need Rockstar, etc etc. If we start seeing games from those companies come onto the Wii U. A good sign but if all we are seeing is Ubisoft, Activision, EA, Sega...they were all there during the early days of the Wii. At the end of the day, Nintendo always has the aces up it's sleeve...Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Kirby. Especially Mario and Zelda, those franchises are so big, they can sell consoles on that alone.

As far as the so-called Xbox 720 and PS4. If anyone uses that argument now, when those systems haven't even been officially acknowledged by Microsoft or Sony. That person is clearly a troll or a troublemaker. Obviously partial to Sony/Microsoft or anti-Nintendo. If those systems are more powerful, lets talk about that when they are released or close to release. Seems more sensible.

#135490 Wii U freezing problem...

Posted by mayhem13 on 21 November 2012 - 12:12 PM in Wii U Hardware

Thats true, I am cranky. I don't mind losing...its a game, losing my progress with a freeze, twice, that can be annoying. I'm sure they'll sort it out. Yea I went through two 360's because of that darn RROD. I always envied those few rare people who bought an early 360 and never had any RROD problems. LUCKY. The freezing is annoying but I love the Wii U so far, I feel its got alot of potential to say the least.

youll have to deal with it atm, is the launch of a system things like this can happen, i hope they release a patch or something soon if its software related

i prefer the freezing than the RROD of the 360 that carp lasted 1 year until the first 360 revision came out, and that was a hardware problem nothing that a patch can fix

#135414 Wii U freezing problem...

Posted by mayhem13 on 21 November 2012 - 10:28 AM in Wii U Hardware

I've had NSMBU freeze twice now on me on the same world/section (different level) and since you can only do a real save twice, midway and the end of the level. That meant I had to redo the level twice, a pain in the ass to be nice. The Wii U is alot of fun so far and shows potential to be a fantastic system. But things like this drain the fun out of it and if it is a Nintendo console and it is not fun. Well, forget about it. Thats what Nintendo is about. My freezing occurs both on TV and the GamePad while the game is switching in between the map and the level. It goes black and never comes back. I have to pull the plug to get the machine to restart. Wether its the integration of the Miiverse that is the cause, glitching within the game itself, the gamepad itself or something wrong with the console itself. I don't know. I pity the people who have to make the update for this thing because there is so many reasons it could freeze. I understand its a launch system but come on, 3DS didn't freeze this badly with the exception of one game. They always say avoid buying a launch system but the Nintendo geek in me can't avoid it. It is annoying. The load times I can handle, I have patience, I grew up in the NES/Genesis/SNES era and then went onto the Playstation/Saturn era of long disc loading times. I'm used to it. But freezing, that is annoying and you know, it can hurt the console. Pulling the plug out the back of a live console is not a good idea in normal circumstances.

I did play Nintendoland and didn't have any freezes though I didn't get far into it. Last thing that happened was they put Miiverse players in my game. So maybe a freeze could occur due to that. But for me, it played fine. I have Zombi U coming today. I'll see how that goes.

I can't accept flaws with a $350 machine, even if it is a great item with flaws. If they don't fix it in two weeks, it goes back or gets sold. I hate to do it. But no one wants to play a Mario game on pins and needles that it will freeze. That is not fun.

The Xbox 360, PS3 does freeze, but occasionally like a PC game. Acceptable. Even the original Wii wasn't above a freeze but it was rare. The Wii U I've had a day and a half day, two freezes. No that is too much.

#131179 New Super Mario Bros.: Wii vs Wii U Graphical Comparison

Posted by mayhem13 on 16 November 2012 - 11:37 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Hmm...well it looks better. I'm a little bummed out, I thought this was a full on sequel in the series. It looks more like a remake with some small and large changes here and there. On one hand that video made me excited, on the other hand, it bummed me out. I've already played the hell out of New Super Mario Bros on the Wii. I sure hope there is some exclusive stages or something truly new that stands out. Mario is in dire need of a new 3D based game (in HD) and a NEW game in general. As in a game that doesn't just re-use old soundbytes and stage ideas and actually tries to be different. The re-using, remaking retro trend WAS fun, it is starting to get stale. Be that as it may, I am still getting it during the launch. But yea I was thinking it was a full on sequel, all the websites says it is. That clip makes me think its a juiced up slightly changed remake.

#131171 Lego City: Undercover

Posted by mayhem13 on 16 November 2012 - 10:59 PM in Wii U Games and Software

I think it looks great, of course, I love open world. I was never a big Lego fan as far as video games. They are good, but not really my style. But open world is all I need. I'm sold. GTA, Fallout, Lego whatever. If it's open world, I'm in. Definately buying when it gets released.

#131165 Mass Effect 3 WiiU port have technical issues

Posted by mayhem13 on 16 November 2012 - 10:51 PM in Wii U Games and Software

Now you wonder if the Wii U will have the ability to patch the game and fix the issues, yea glitches shouldn't exist. But nearly any involved game these days comes out with glitches and occasionally ports do too. Part of that reason is because they are rushed and part of the reason is because the makers are reliant on game updates/patches that the 360/PS3 do very well. Sometimes they can be fixed up. So far though, no Nintendo console has offered a real game update/patch system. 3DS offers a half hearted solution but its not a real game update system. I am getting the Wii U but if they don't have game updates. Forget about DLC for the most part. Forget about fixing bugs. Forget about Bethesda....because they can't release a game without bugs. People have said there will be game updates on the Wii U. I'll believe it when I see it. People said Wii had game updates, it did not. People said 3DS has game updates, not really. An update on a 3DS either has to go through a system update which is rediculous and relies on Nintendo too much or if it is a downloaded game, you have to redownload the entire game. Otherwise, it can't be patched. Alot of third party companies with alot of overall good games, will not make video games on systems that do not allow patches/game updates. I am excited for the Wii U but also cautious. Alot of misinformation floating around the internet. Assumptions. Oh well, anyway with Mass Effect 3, lets hope they somehow can sort it out and fix it. Launch Titles sometimes do suffer from bugs and so do ports, it's not an excuse but it does happen.

#131088 Wal-Mart Shipping of Pre-Orders?

Posted by mayhem13 on 16 November 2012 - 07:05 PM in Wii U Hardware

They shipped my Zombi U and New Super Mario Bros U today. Still no shipment of the console. And they have delayed my shipment of the Official Wii U Pro Controller to "two to three weeks before Christmas" and switched it to a Black Pro Controller (instead of White which I selected). The way they word the email explaining the delay of the Pro Controller makes it hard to tell if they are out of stock despite my pre-order or if Nintendo has delayed the Pro Controller's release. Has anyone gotten the delay notice who purchased the Walmart Bundle Pre-Order? Anyone gotten a shipped notice for their Pro Controller (any color)? Now I'm all worried and paranoid that Walmart will "delay" my Wii U console. Who knows, they did switch the color of my controller from white to black. What is not to say they won't be able to fufill the pre-order. Though they did say they would ship the console on time, for what that is worth. I've never pre-ordered with Walmart before, I don't know how good or bad they are.

Has anyone had their console shipped?
