Sounds good but proof is in the actual gameplay shown off and announcements made.

ceo of gear box, randy pitchford said this will be the best version out of the consoles. Not only better looking then xbox/ps3, but also cool integrations with the game pad.

#148626 Anyone else having this problem with their gamepad LCD screen?

Posted by wiiufoo on 16 December 2012 - 03:17 PM in Wii U Hardware Help

Once you turn the screen on, it doesn't really show.

What you have there may be Newton Rings. The "gasoline" like mark you see is caused by interference between rays of light reflected by the top and bottom surface of the very thin air gap between the two pieces of glass. In Wii U case its one piece of clear plastic and glass. Although figure 1 shows an ideal situation- it gives you an idea of why Newton Rings form on the Wii U gamepad. Google Newton Rings for more images.

Posted Image

Figure 1. Basically the two bands of light interact with one another to form rings of light and dark areas, or rainbowy colours. This is because the light ray reflected by the flat pane of glass has to travel a further distance (Δy), and is out of phase with the light ray reflected by the curved glass.

Now why would the Wii U's gamepad do this? Well because of the nature of the resistive touch screen. Unlike capacitive touch screens which has two straight glass panels, resistive has one lower glass panel and the upper is a flexible plastic screen (In figure 2 it is Polyester). Like trying to stretch out a really big bed sheet with someone so its perfectly flat, the middle of the bed sheet will alwase be "domed" down due to gravity. My guess is that the Polyester upper screen (Assuming it is polyester, which is a plastic) domes downwards a little (due to gravity? electrostatic force? Not %100 sure.). The upper plasctic surface being curved and the tiny air gap underneith causes this circular interefernce pattern we call Newton Rings.

Posted Image
Figure 2. Wii U vs Ipad (I know the top sais figure 1 lol, just bare with me XD)

I don't know why the game pad has that particular pattern in that location, perhaps its wrinkles in the material or local depressions in that spot or maybe its humidity causing the material to warp (I'm not a materials expert). Most images and figures are highly idealized anyways, which means in nature it doesn't alwase appear as nice concentric circles, like figure 3.

Figure 3, Ta-Da!

Please excuse any bad writing and please feel free to criticise any bad science(science is about disproving a theory until you find one that can't be disproven!). This is just my theory on why there are "gasoline" marks, feel free to interject.

Also hot blowdryer and plastic isnt a really good match... seriously though you can only really see it when the pad isn't displaying anything, no biggy. I've been using mine like like that since launch, it really not noticeable in my opinion. The call is yours to make if you want to take it back, but I personally wouldn't try to fix it by heating or anything, it may warp the plastic top Resistive Screen surface (and void the warrenty).

***Update***
Heres a solution I found on Acer's phone website.

Newton rings on touch screens

Why do I see alternating light and dark rings on my touchscreen?

In some cases, you may see light and dark circles show up on a touchscreen. These circular reflections are called Newton Rings and do not have any effect on the proper functioning of the LCD panel or on the touch functionality.
CAUSE
Due to temperature or pressure differences, the film used for the resistive touch screen may not perfectly adhere to the glass layer of the LCD panel. This can cause reflections showing up as coloured rings.
SOLUTION
These rings go away as the panel warms up during use, and may return again when the system has cooled down. Their occurrence is a known limitation of the used technology and does not indicate a product defect.

awesome, thanks for posting that!

I wouldn't jump to conclusions as the plastic isn't exactly flush around the ends, I believe its to make it easier to remove.

The plastic also never guarantees dust free, its only to prevent scratches during shipping not dust. Its perfectly possible for dust to get on the console at the factory before they even put the plastic on.

The real question is, does the console work properly?

You're right. I brought the new one home today and the film coverings looked the same as last. What's strange is it was packed slightly different. There was green tape on the console holding all the ends together. The gamepads foam cover looked a little different.

So I guess not all will be alike.

This ones gamepad also had that water mark on the screen. So this is normal. Like people said on neogaf, this can be dryed out and will eventually go away.

#148461 Anyone else having this problem with their gamepad LCD screen?

Posted by wiiufoo on 16 December 2012 - 12:16 AM in Wii U Hardware Help

found a thread on neogaf which stated its from humidity and that it can be dried out. So I put it up to my heater on high setting and its starting to dissapear.

So anyone else with this issue put a blow dryer or heater next to it and it should resolve your problem. Just from humidity.

i should also add, the last one i returned has this problem as well. It was much worse than this one. Strange thing is it didnt have the prolbem for like 5 days and then out of no where appeared all over the screen. Must be something with climate change.

well i decided to start opening up the packaging covering the console itself and started to notice the plastic films that cover the ends of the console look like they've been put back on, and theres a bunch of dust and bigger particles.

This is making me very mad to the point where I just might wait to get another one.

Im definitley bringing that back to target and getting store credit.

does anyone remember the plastic packaging for the manual being sealed? I thought it was like that on first one i got. This manual isn't sealed.

Ah, so you took it out hardcore, by the way you made it sound you were only taking a peek.

I initially took a peek. I found the picture I posted on Neogaf.

You opened a brand new never opened up Wii U? If so what your describing may be the plastic they put on electronic devices to help protect them.

Heres a picture of what I'm talking about.

Not sure if this due to weather changes or what but theres strange watermarks under the lcd screen. Kind of looks like when you push in on an lcd screen monitor or like that glare gasoline gives off the ground if that makes sense. Kind like a strange chameleon color look.

Anyone one else having this show up on their lcd screen? Wondering if this goes away or what?

I already returned my wii u once(glad i didnt buy anything from eshop yet) and i opened this one and just checked the gamepad quick without leaving fingerprints. I saw what I described above on the screen and just quickly packed it back up.

Hoping this is a temporary thing that happens to the screen otherwise its going back to the store.

Seems like quality control isnt that great at the moment with the gamepads at least. I've had dust marks on the glossy finish and other things like the gamepad protective foam had a hole in the middle and the gamepad had a mark on it. It came off though.

as far as motion controls in this game, reviews have said its not as good as mario kart. this might be fixed with a patch, but you cant beat using numchuck with wiimote.

The wii version bonus addidtion adds outrun bay track and challenges, metal sonic and mods. You can also play with 5 ppl online with one console. Theres two extra party games in the wii version.

The gamepad can be used as weapon cam, rear view cam and a map. You can also use wiimote to drive while u have ur gamepad on a stand as a map.

only negative is no online chat.

^^^

I rarely get the boost at the start as well. Never read how to do that. It comes down to being able to do chains of combos with boosting. Always drift when possible and try to chain together that with the boost pads on the ground as well as knowing parts where to do flips to get more boost. Drifting while flying is probably the toughest to pull-off(depending on the track lay-out) so that makes a big difference as well.

Also try to spread out your drift boosts with any ground boosts. If you overlap them I believe it's a waste(I think...). So make sure you time it where you drift boost is pretty much all out before you hit a boost pad so you're chaining them together. Always hope to hear the announce yell, "Super chain", or is it "Super combo"? Can't remember right now...

It also helps being good at using your items especially while looking behind you. Also, it shows which items your foes have in the race so always pay attention to that and make sure to be cautious of whatever item that is.

I ended up picking it up for buy one get one 50% off at toys r us. They might still be doing that.

I promise you if you're a fan of sega and karting games, this is a must own!

One of the best karting games made. I guess you cant just call it a kart game though since some levels you fly and drive a boat(mind you that you do all three in the race). The flying feels great and driving a boat feels like playing hydro thunder. Very fun.

What's great too is the game depends more on your driving skills then using items. It isn't clustered with things flying everywhere so you're not always feeling that uneasy tension in mario kart games. It takes more skill.

I remember reading that people who helped develop pure and project gotham racing worked on this game.

Anyone else pick this game up?

I never really considered it until I played it at a friends house. I must say it's my most played title out of the three I have(Nintendoland/NSMB/+sonic).

Even If I had other games like AC3 and BLOPS2 I'm sure I would be playing this game more. I think it deserves more attention.

The gameplay is fantastic. Each form of vehicle has its own feel to and everything flows nicely. The music remixes in it are amazing especially if you're a sega fan. The fan service they give in this game it's just so much.

If anyone is a fan of karting games and sega, pick this game up now!

I already put 17 hours into and Ive only had it for 3/4 days. There's so much to do in it and unlock things. As well as multiplayer modes online. I only wish they have included voice chat but this might come up in a patch.

Just need more people online play it!

Happy to have this in my collection and is some of the most fun I've had playing game since the experiences in the 90s playing classic sega arcade games and the likes of that.

#147232 Wii U is in a precarious position

Posted by wiiufoo on 12 December 2012 - 06:17 PM in Wii U Hardware

Actually Nintendo I think is safe this time because it set itself apart from both Microsoft and Sonys Consoles.

The new Playstation and Xbox will be very similar with their approach to gaming(that is going for horsepower) opposed to the Wii U's innovation with the gamepad. It's such a difference experience where it's worth getting even if you own an xbox/ps3.

Sony this time around is going be in the most trouble as they are already in financial trouble and on top of that have to compete with Microsofts when they both launch.

The Wii U has at least a year head start with the upcoming consoles. Who knows, we might not get one or both of the next gen consoles until 2014?

So before the next two consoles even come out, you can expect to see a $50 price drop on both versions of the console in 2013 sometime(most likely fall/holiday time). This will make the basic 250 and the delux 300.

The Wii launched at a $250 price rang and that seemed to be the sweet spot. Microsoft and Sonys new console will be at a higher price where the casual consumer would rather get the Wii U.

If you have noticed there isn't much marketing for the Wii U. My idea on this is there's no need for it since there isn't any competition and the systems price point is at its highest since it just launched. Why spend all that money now? I believe Nintendo is waiting for the games and maybe a price drop and you can guarantee to see the Wii U marketed all over with commercials and what not before the next two consoles come out.

On top of all this, Nintendos 1st part titles are easily system sellers and have always carried Nintendo through any tough times.

I think Nintendo is safe. ;)

#144278 12-5-12 NoA/NoE Nintendo Direct Discussion topic

Posted by wiiufoo on 05 December 2012 - 08:32 PM in Wii U Hardware

Seems nintendo kept it mellow as they want a homerun(possibly grand-slam? :D) at E3 this year. I have a feeling they're going to have a big showing...smash bros is confirmed to be shown(I believe I read that :). Hopefully first footage of a 3d mario and some more footage of the 3d zelda. Of course it'd be nice to see what Retro is working on as well. Here's to hoping for a metroid game thats online as rumored as a possibility.

Still got some great games coming out beforehand. Raymen Legends, Monster Hunter 3, Pikmin 3, Lego city undercover. These should hold me off for some time.

I've never owned a gamecube or a wii so I never had the pleasure of playing a pikmin game. This one looks awesome and I'm excited to play it. As stated above, also looking forward to lego city undercover. The wii u is getting some good exclusives pretty early on. Rayman demo! Where are you!?

#144258 How do you clean your gamepad?

Posted by wiiufoo on 05 December 2012 - 06:51 PM in Wii U Hardware

Thanks for feedback. I'm still not sure wether to use a screen-protector or not since I like to draw on the gamepad. Not sure if it affects sensitivity that much.

#144256 Thank you Target...

Posted by wiiufoo on 05 December 2012 - 06:48 PM in Wii U Hardware

Ran into some minor problems with my wii u gamepad. For instance, stuck pixels and some strange marks on the pad. I called up Nintendo first to see if they could send me a replacement pad in which the lady said they could only repair it and not sure if it would cost me money. I decided to call up Target and the guy told me to bring it right in. Took  me literally about 2 minutes from start to finish. Told the lady at the counter the problem, she says, "okay go grab a new one and bring it over here". She could of cared less what the problem was. She just made sure everything was in there and that the serial matched up with what was on the receipt.

So now I got a brand-new wii u and hopefully this one turns out better.

Anyone in the same boat as me, try and exchange at your store instead of going through nintendo.

It's interesting that Nintendo claims stuck/dead pixels isnt a big enough issue to offer a free exchange.

"turns out that Nintendo doesn't think it's a big issue either. Specifically in the manual (page 52 to be exact) it state:

Due to the characteristics of liquid crystal displays, a small number of pixels may not illuminate or may always stay lit. This is normal and not considered a defect unless the number of pixels that dont function normally increases over time."

Target rocks! I'm sure other places will do this as well.

it seems inevitable that nintendo some where down the line will release an improved gamepad. Who here thinks we might get one with a 3d screen? technology would have to catch up as the viewing angles would have to be great.
