Gamepad is just fine. Most wii u owners love it. We don't want the same console just with better hardware, we want a different console and wii u is different. 8th gen should be about innovation, not about graphics, power etc. If somebody wants excellent graphics, he'll play on his pc not on xbox1/ps4/wii u.

POPULAR

The money spent developing the GamePad alone and producing it could have been spent on better hardware or reducing the cost of the console.

If I could change things right now I would start by selling remastered collections for Zelda, Metroid, Mario, etc. This would move Wii Us off the shelves incredibly fast. Just look at how popular the Master Chief Collection is for the Xbox One and the remastered version of The Last of Us is for the PS4.

If that isn't possible at least sell downloadable GameCube and Nintendo 64 games on the eShop.

Do you actually own and frequently use a Wii U? If you do you in the incredibly small minority of people who do and don't like the gamepad.

The console also doesn't need to be cheaper. It's the cheapest 8 gen on the market by half.

The hardware doesn't need to be better. Games look run beautifully and look beautiful doing it. No matter ow much you put into a console PC will be better. It's a waste of time. It's also a waste of time because Nintendo already has a terrible reputation with people who think hardware make games fun. No matter what Nintendo does, they won't change those people's minds because those people are idiots. They would never believe a Nintendo console can be powerful. That's why stupid rumours like the Wii U being less powerful than PS360 are still widely believed.

Also it takes time and money to remaster games. That money is better spent creating new experiences. Just cause other companies are doing it, doesn't make it a good idea.

Well, I'm not a fan of the gamepad, and while I don't own a Wii U, I do use it somewhat frequently.

Whether he does or not though, there's nothing wrong with him being against it.

It is when he's indicating that, if he had the opportunity, he would force everyone else to not be able to use the gamepad either.

edit Yes I deleted one of my sentences, it was not necessary. Everyone has their own opinion about what Nintendo needs to do, but removing the gamepad really doesn't make sense. It's currently integral to the OS and it would add confusion thanks to the number of games that depend on it being there (All of them actually. Even the ones that just use it as a second screen will need to be patched.)

Do you actually own and frequently use a Wii U? If you do you in the incredibly small minority of people who do and don't like the gamepad.

The console also doesn't need to be cheaper. It's the cheapest 8 gen on the market by half.

Could you be anymore condescending? Yes, I actually own a Wii U. I've had one since day one of launch and considering the fact that  I have 14 games on it already I think its safe to say I frequently use it.

So far I've yet to play a game on the Wii U that puts the GamePad to great use and that's including all the best exclusive Wii U Nintendo titles.

I suppose I found it somewhat useful for ZombiU and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate because I could quickly navigate through items but it's nothing worth bragging about. Nintendo Land is the only game I can think of that truly shines with the GamePad and that came out at launch. I mean if you have a game that truly shines with the GamePad please share it with me because I don't see it anywhere.

The hardware doesn't need to be better. Games look run beautifully and look beautiful doing it. No matter ow much you put into a console PC will be better. It's a waste of time. It's also a waste of time because Nintendo already has a terrible reputation with people who think hardware make games fun.

"The hardware doesn't need to be better" but let's go ahead and develop the Wii U which has better hardware i.e. better graphics than the Wii and advertise it as the HD Nintendo console, please. Don't you think you're kind of contradicting yourself? And obviously a PC is always going to be better but the entry level cost of a console is a lot cheaper and it will last for years to come with exclusives. This is coming from someone that is a hardcore PC gamer. If someone is looking to get into gaming I'm going to recommend they just buy a console, plug it in and play. The only things anyone is missing out on PC gaming is a few extra fancy settings which are nice but are hardly noticeable while playing unless you do a side-by-side comparison with consoles.

"No matter what Nintendo does, they won't change those people's minds because those people are idiots" how did you rationally come to that conclusion? You should really be careful with thinking like that because you're just stereotyping everyone that isn't rushing out to buy a Wii U. You're completely generalizing. All I am saying is the GamePad doesn't seem to be a selling point for the Wii U anymore just look at Nintendo at E3. They are focusing on games. This is the common formula for a console's success and Microsoft has quickly shifted focus away from their gimmicky Kinect to focus on games as well because that is what Sony was doing with the PS4. It's nothing to be ashamed of. If anything the GamePad should have been a peripheral and sold separately and I'm sure people would have bought it if they were more interested in it.

Obviously it's too late this topic is titled "If you were in charge of Nintendo..." so I wanted to just say that I would have gone about launching the Wii U differently. You can disagree with me but the launch wasn't exactly the most successful. I bought a Wii U because I am a hardcore Nintendo fan and of course I'm going to buy their consoles but up until Mario Kart 8 my friends refused to buy one. And even with Mario Kart 8 making my friends run out and buy a Wii U the game itself doesn't actually glorify the GamePad. Nobody bought Mario Kart 8 for the GamePad they bought Wii Us entirely for the game itself and completely ignored the GamePad. That says a lot about just how much of an impact the GamePad has had when your best title on your console proves its almost irrelevant. Super Smash Bros for the Wii U is once again going to be one of the best games on the Wii U and I've yet to see any focus on the GamePad with that game. The total opposite actually with the bundled GameCube controller and adapter for more GC controllers. That practically screams "Hey what's a GamePad and who needs it because we are playing this game with pro controllers and gamecube controllers!"

Also it takes time and money to remaster games. That money is better spent creating new experiences. Just cause other companies are doing it, doesn't make it a good idea.

There is a lot of people who have missed out on classic older titles so a remastered collection is the perfect opportunity to introduce those people to the games and welcome back veterans to enjoy their favorite games again. You are aware that the Wind Waker HD is a remastered game right? It got great reviews, the bundle was attractive to customers and helped get more Wii Us off the shelves, and the game felt brand new to me because it was remastered with better graphics and I love the nostalgia of playing it again. But you probably didn't think about the success of Wind Waker HD before just jumping on the anti-every other console idea that isn't Nintendo's bandwagon that you seem to be obviously a part of. Other companies are doing it and Nintendo has done it already. And what I'm saying is a gorgeous Zelda, Mario, or Metroid Collection could go a long way for the Wii U. Just imagine the glorious collector's edition of those collections. You seriously wouldn't want to revisit some of these classics in full remastered HD glory? I loved the Wind Waker HD and I hope Nintendo does more HD remasters.

Which would leave us with what? The Wii had the wii remotes which was it's smash hit, plus it had a buttload of games at launch, and the games kept coming. If the Wii U never had the Gamepad then sure it'd be maybe $50 cheaper, but it would also have nothing at all to distinguish itself from other consoles. It's proven that Nintendo's IP isn't enough to draw in new customers, and the old ones will only buy the latest and greatest for so long. It wouldn't have any of the touchscreen-designed ports, and all other multiplats would no longer have an edge that their prettier versions on PS4/XBone don't have. Hell, Nintendo had the Gamecube which ran circles around the n64 and the PS2, but that didn't stop it from losing to the PS2.

And I'd love to hear what you think is "better" that Nintendo could've done. Virtual Reality is still an expensive concept and we're a long ways away from something like The Matrix or Holodecks. It's easier to say that someone could've done something "better" but in practice "better is not always possible at the time. I can say Edison could've done something "better" than vacuum tubes and point at my laptop to prove it, but that doesn't make it true.

You guys are definitely too defensive of Nintendo, considering that none of us are actually in charge of it.

If i had made the Wii U, well, ignoring the fact that I wouldn't have made a 'sequel' console, I would have made a more standard controller. Something that allowed more serious gamers to actually consider the console as something other than a kid console. Something with a convenient shape, a good amount of buttons, etc. The current Wii-motes are made for motion control, and really that's all they are good for, and while the gamepad is a step in the right direction, it still is a bit too gimmicky for me. I'd take an ordinary gamepad over it any day.

Just opinions of course, no reason to get mad or anything.

You understand the gamepad is a standard controller it just has a screen in it. The whining about thr gamepad I will never understand. It is what makes the Wii U different. I think it is fine as is. I am enjoying off-tv gameplay 95 percent of my gaming on Wii U comes from off-tv gaming. I do thing Nintendo needs to stop giving these publishers/devs excuses to skip content on their platform. I say that meaning stick with industry standards. I wish Wii U was x86 just so I do have to hear developer after developer delaying games becuase Wii U architecture is so different and requires more work to get the game running. I dont think nintendo has to play the spec for spec game with sony/microsoft but you have to make it easier for devs and dont give them reasons to make excuses.

I'm not being condescending. It was an honest question. Even if the gamepad isn't put to great use in your opinion, fact is, most Wii U users like if not love it. Without it it would just be another generic PC knockoff. Most owners don't want that, you being the incredibly small minority. People who aren't buying because of the gamepad or because of RAM will either already own another console or are just full of crap trying to pretend their bashing Nintendo is reasonable. In other words you would gain zero sales by getting rid of the pad. People either already have a "better" version of the system, or they were never going to buy it in the first place.

I'm saying the hardware on the WIi U doesn't need to be better and you took that to assume  meant the hardware on the WIi doesn't need to be better? No point going any further there.

But if you're going to recommend a console for price and games why does the Wii U need more RAM? It already has the best of both the things you mentioned (of the 8th gen consoles).

In fact you're saying the only thing nice about PC is that it has a few extra settings? In other words settings made available by the extra RAM. So if that's not worth you recommending PC over a console, once again, why does WIi U nee more RAM.

Now that's actually contradictory

I actually explained how I came to that conclusion. Ridiculous rumours about the power of Wii U? Another is something I believe 3Dude posted somewhere around here where because MK8 ran 1080p (upscaled 720, I know) at 60 fps, that it must just be easy to do, and that any half decent game dev could do it with a game like MK8.

Idiotic statement. People purposely blinding themselves from the truth so they don;t have to admit the Wii U is actually pretty powerful as it is now.

Also you clearly missed the part of E3 where Nintendo talked about Miyamoto, their most famous dev working on games made to make great use of the gamepad, and then showing several of his ideas off for hours...

Microsoft shifted away from the kinect because no one actually wanted it, Xbone owners included. Once again, this is not the case with the gamepad.

Kinect was also making the console some one-hundred-something dollars more expensive. The gamepad (as previosuly stated) is making the Wii U about $50 cheaper.

The extra money for the kinect was making the Xbone the most expensive 8th gen on the market. Even with the gamepad, the WIi U is the cheapest 8th gen on the market by nearly 50%.

See why the two aren't comparable?

And if the gamepad hadn't been mandatory, no one would have otheres to develop for it or put effort into it, and many of the ports and multiplats that were best on Wii U simply wouldn't have been.

I don't think anyone in this thread would deny the Wii U launch was not successful. I don't anyone at Nintendo would say so. IN fact many of the big guys over there have said otherwise. Everyone in this thread has their ideas about what they would do to boost sales. Very few have been very good. Acouple have been obvious. A few have been agreeble. Many were meh. And several were bad. But pretty much all your ideas were bad. I'm not saying that to offend you, I'm just being honest (same thing I've said a million times, I don't have time to beat around the bush, and it's not helping anyone). I literally thought you were joking. I thought you were being sarcastic. All your points have been brought up before and each and every time, Wii U owners and many others have explained why the ideas are stupid, and how all it would cause is more losses and an even poorer launch for Nintendo. You;re suggesting they lose the interest o their current owners, ad lose pretty much all those sales, to try and appeal to a group hat doesn't actually want, and never would buy the Wii U when if it was just another PC hack and was last in the race, with the worst reputation for that type of sale. If your ideas were actually used, Reggie would have to be begging his own family to buy the Wii U so they could pass the 3k sales threshold.

Also people currently don't buy the game for the gamepad simply because they don't actually know how it will affect their experience. Once they get used to it and use it frequently, the vast majority of those friends would never want their Wii U without one. Even if you don't think so, to many it's incredibly useful, even if just for things like off screen play and splitscreen. I know I personally have used the off screen play feature numerous ties, and loved the fact I could every single time. Then the asymmetry for things like watching a video on the TV while till being able to browse. Literally almost every single day I am lad for that. Playing without a TV? Done it several times, plan to do it when I go on vacation in a couple of weeks.

The gamepad has it's uses.

Also the gamecube controller comes bundled because the competitive smash community begged for it and Nintendo wanted to (finally) show them some support. Otherwise why wouldn't they just have gone with the Wii U pro controller?

Or they could just release the games people missed on the VC and save boatloads of time and money, then release new games on top of that.

I am very aware that WWHD is a remastered game. I'm also aware it was made as a "warmup" (so to speak) for one of Nintendo's dev teams.

Now let me explain why you run a higher risk of losing money making a remake. Many of the people who would buy remakes already own a Wii U because they are fans of Nintendo. You're not moving many consoles with those people. Then the number of people who wanted it the first time it came out but couldn't get it then, but are both willing and able to get it now? Also small. Now WWHD was a success, and yes many people are willing to buy a remake if it's a very big upgrade from the original and the original is a classic (a la WWHD and OoT).

BUT

More people are willing to pay for a all new experience. Because bigger groups of all the above mentioned groups would be willing to pay for a new experience, especially if it looks great.

Also, Metroid sales are generally meh. Even for a new experience. Barely anyone who isn't a semi-hardcore to hardcore gamers knows about the game. Won't move many new consoles. Same thing with most people who want it already owning the console. Making remakes of metroid games is some risky stuff.

Well you don't have to be in charge of a company to defend it. Fact is Nintendo is one of the most stand up companies in the industry right now, and they have an incredibly bad reputation which is completely undeserved. Also obviously Nintendo can't personally stand up for themselves in every comment ever, so their fans have to do it for them sometimes. And they really do deserve it because (most times) they try to do what's best for the fans.

But anyway, that's not really related to the current situation. We're not really defending Nintendo, we're defending the gamepad.

As for why it needs defeding and why getting rid of it is a terrible idea, see above. I didn't directly respond to you, but hopefully you'll see my point.

But I'll also add; that controller exists! It's called the Wii U pro controller...

P.S if either of you want to actually see a gimmicky useless touchpad controllers see: PS4 controller.

Yet you don't here people in the "hardcore" community smashing that with disgust nearly as often. Hmmm... I wonder why...

P.P.S I'm not mad :) no one on this forums has ever actually made me mad (despite people thinking so several times...).

I don't think anyone in this thread would deny the Wii U launch was not successful.

I'll deny that quite happily. I'd say the Wii U had a nice launch. It arrived in November and by December it had already sold 3 million units (Excuse the use of IGN, it was the first thing I could find). 3 million in two months is solid, at least in my opinion.

It was the period after launch - you know, most of 2013, that killed the Wii U's momentum. That was where things went wrong.

I don't think bringing up another crappy controller has much to do with this. I didn't even like the normal PS controllers.

You're right, didn't realize launch was that successful. :)

The point isn't the controller itself, it's the amount of "What a stupid gimmick" crap it gets in comparison to the gamepad.

Thanks. It's a pet peeve of mine when people say that the Wii U had a horrible launch and was slow from the start. I agree with everything else in your posts though.

So now I'm wondering what a nondescript amount of people supposedly says has to do with me, but oh well. Some mysteries are best left alone.

I use the Pro Controller most the time. However been many times I been watching a movie and use the gamepad to play a game while watching. It also helped me one time with a computer issue when my PC would not connect to the internet and my tablets battery was dead so grabbed the WiiU Gamepad googled my issue opened command prompt on my PC fixed the issue. I also love it for Google Earth and exploring some real life locations moving the gamepad around. Gamepad can serve more than just a second screen but a great exploration tool for a game or application. Thing is it's nintendo's fault for not talking about this more.

If I was in charge I would make Super Metroid HD and Super Mario Sunshine 2 as launch titles for the Super Nintendo 2 HD. All games will run at 120 FPS with 4K resolution.

I think most talk about how it didn't have games like Pikmin, Donkey Kong, 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, Metroid, Zelda at launch. I mean I personally didn't care, I thought it had a pretty good launch games to get you started, most launch titles arn't that great for any system, though Wii did really good. We did get a few meh ports, but if done right was a stepping stone for more titles to follow, sadly that didn't happen. People just had high expectations and they would not work with Nintendo's dev cycle.
