A BUNCH of info in the link

Smartphone then? I don't like it. Gaming needs physical feedback buttons.

Reminds me of the fan mock ups for the "Revolution" controller in 2005.

This patent now makes sense... with the news back in January or so... of Nintendo using Sharp's free form displays.

Smarphone? Nope. I do not think so as the free form displays can be contoured around physical buttons. Basically covering the entire surface of the controller.

You know what Nintendo really needs to win back the gaming community?.....A new console with a gimmicky controller! Our prayers have been answered!

D-pad,Analog,Shoulder buttons,Rumble. Nintendo practically invented the modern day VG controller. DS4 on PS4 Has a touch pad and motion controls.DS4 is "gimmicky"as well. Xbone controller has a bunch of rumble motors in the triggers. They use a "gimmicky" controller. So the one with a screen the most useful of the 3 is singled out as a negative? Are people this stupid? Touchpad on my DS4 is pretty much useless, not seen it used for anything meaningful. Gamepad screen come in handy many times when had to leave the room.

Sony and MS rely on Nintendo for ideas for controllers. They evolve controllers like it or not.

I don't really know how Nintendo can "win" cause offering a powerful console with a normal controller doesn't really get you anywhere.  There already is that and of the two, one is already dominating.

I said it once, twice, thrice, etc and I'll say it again: Nintendo needs to focus on the lowest price they can pull off without compromising the experience. Games like Windwaker, Splatoon, etc prove that the Wii U as-is can push out really awesome graphics; and the older Wii proves that Nintendo can dominate by acting as a "secondary" console that people purchase alongside their Xbox or Playstation, or even as a entry console to the current generation.

but the wii wasn't successful as a "secondary" console, it was successful because they tapped into a new market, a market which has since moved to smartphones

making a console the same as xbox and ps4 is going to flop, they need something which will get those people (or non gamers again) to buy the console

Hopefully  Ninty comes out with another phallic shaped controller so you can pull the wii-mote out of your arse and swap it out for their new gimmick

Sometimes I just want to play my Nintendo games without shaking my wrist or blowing on my screen. Although I have to say; making a new console for the sole purpose of having the mini-map not on the TV and on my controller instead was some great innovation!....I cant wait for a mini-map that now wraps around my buttons next gen ;)

a controller with a tactile pad in the middle like ps4's controller would be good

Nintendo would do well with an easy to hold/use controller that offers USEABLE and EFFECTIVE innovation that can actually improve how we play games.

The U controller just felt likes cash in on the tablet craze. And that failed horribly.

Just provide a robust, powerful console capable of letting game developers express their vision better than the competition does and ADD innovation to that staple core tenet.
