There is potentially good and bad to the rumours.
The Good:
If they make discs a use-once but also unlock the PC version of the game too, that would be good. However I fear the greedy **** won't do that.
The Bad:
I know several people who do not even have their Xbox 360 connected to the Internet, at least one them doesn't even HAVE broadband at all. Both are currently Xbox 360 gamers, they don't own a PS3. So if Microsoft do this they are forcing them to side with the PS4 as the Xbox simply won't work for them at all.
Personally I think even if the Good point above does apply (fat chance) I will probably still switch to PS4. Bearing in mind Xbox has been my main console since the first one came out. They would have to do something REALLY amazing with the Windows 8 integration to make it worth losing more freedom over.
At least 75% of my games collection is thanks to second hand games. I think they are shooting themselves in the foot if they kill off second hand games.
What about the people who buy second hand games then buy the online pass/DLC? Or who rent a game then buy it on the strength of the rental? (I have done both these things)
One thing you have to take into account here also is that owning the disc of a game isn't the guarantee you can play it in the future that it used to be anyway.
If in 10 years time you want to play an Xbox 360/PS3 game, will it be worth it if you don't have all the patches (and can no longer download them) so have to put up with all the bugs games inevitably launched with?
If your save game was made after patches, the chances are it won't even load it without them, even more likely if you used DLC. In other words, they have ALREADY made games depend on being always online, they have just done it stealthily so that you won't really notice until the patching system is taken offline.
