We all know about this game and how it's coming out November 13.

I have a question though, do you guys know what game this is a sequel to? When I first saw/heard of this game, I thought it was a true sequel to Super Mario 64. It's not looking like it from all the gameplay I have see so far.
It honestly looks like three games combined in one game.
Super Mario Bros 3 + Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario 64= Super Mario Land 3D.

Here is some gameplay footage.

As you can see it's got the familiar deaths from Super Mario Galaxy. There is also a time limit, that was from Super Mario Bros 3. Then you've got that 3D feel that was from Super Mario 64.
So, does anyone know if this is a sequel to a game, or a brand new game?

It's obviously a new type of game. But generally, it's a 3D platformer based on Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Galaxy.

It's sort of a new game, like new super mario bros. But this game is like a throwback to Super Mario Land 3. It has a 3d surrounding like SM64 and SMG.
It's definitely connected with SML3 with the airships, tannuki, raccoon tail, and even the title.

I did read an article that it was a game going back to its roots... hope that helps.

This is looking like a must-buy game for me. It looks promising so far. The only thing that's missing at the moment is Yoshi. It doesn't look like he'll be making an appearance in this game at the moment. I'm sure it'll still be a great game though.

I can't wait for this game. I hope that the story will hopefully be a little different from the other times, but I don't care if it isn't ;)

I think the story will just be something along the lines of: Princess peach gets kidnapped by Bowser. Mario has to rescue her. Personally, I don't find the story important in many Mario games. I'd rather have lots of good levels.

But what's wrong with having lots of good levels and a good story?

Super Mario 3D Land, to my knowledge, is supposed to be Super Mario Bros. 3 with a z-axis. From the impressions I've read, it plays very much like a classic sidescroller, even though the graphics make it look like a Super Mario Galaxy sequel. The camera is entirely scripted - you never get direct control over it - and usually looks at the action from one of four or five different camera angles (from videos, it looks like much of the time it's a side-on view). Mario is locked into moving in eight directions, and you run by pressing a run button. All of the levels have a time limit, and apparently do away with the sheer grandeur of the Galaxy games in exchange for shorter, faster levels focused on quick bursts of fun.

I still have no doubt it's going to be a great game, but it sounds really weird from what I've read about it so far. It's definitely gonna be different from any other Mario game we've ever had before.

And I second AMAC on Yoshi. Yoshi should definitely be in more platformers. I'm still waiting to see a true sequel to Super Mario World...

EDIT: I just realized that the thread's title was slightly off. It's Super Mario 3D Land, not Super Mario Land 3D. I've corrected it.

Adding a note about the thread's title

Personally, I think that "Super Mario Land 3D" sounds better than "Super Mario 3D Land". I'll probably get used to the proper title though and it's not going to put me of the game itself.

I think that Super Mario Land 3D sounds kinda cheesy, as if it was a 3D-ified version of Super Mario Land. Calling it "Super Mario 3D Land" helps to differentiate it better.

Then again, I think that having "3D" in the title of any game at all makes it sound cheesy, anyway. Makes it sound a bit like a bad movie. I'd much rather they called it Super Mario Bros. 5 or something.

But it does sound better. Right?

I think Feld0's right. The title could have been a little more creative.

No matter what the title is called, I'm still confident that this is going to be a fun and great game.

The title doesn't change that fact, no matter how weird and/or cheesy the title may sound.

They could have come up with something better when it comes to the title. But they just want to confirm that on this Mario game, you're on land and not in the galaxy. And it's in 3D, hence the title.
I want this game...

I think the reason they put " Land" in the title was the fact that the two Super Mario Land games were not ordinary Mario games. Super Mario Land did not take place in the Mushroom Kingdom but instead Sarasla ( Is that how you spell it?) Land. Fire Flowers were replaced by Super Balls and most of the enemies were not in any Mario game before and after it. The game kind of sticks out from the rest but in a good way. Since this is the first 3D Mario game to not include collecting Stars of any sort and the fact that it takes on the gameplay of the 2D Mario games like no health meter or power ups that last until you get hit the game sticks out like the original Mario Land games. They probably added 3D in the title because the games has alot of Mario 3 style elements like the Tanuki suit, The Airships and Boom Boom as a boss.

While I don't think the title is overly important, I do think they could have done a better job, the past 3D mario games have had unique titles, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy. I think having this is like putting it in with the SML game series, which I sincerely hope it isn't, I think as a 3D Mario game it should be seperate, or a direct sequel to another 3D Mario game, personally, I would much rather simply, Super Mario 3D. But as I said, name isn't everything and it won't be affecting me getting a copy of the game, I'd still get it if it had an even worse name like 'Mario's Happy Slap Adventures' (actually, that name sound awesome, hint, hint, Nintendo)

"Super Mario 64" is even less creative than "Super Mario 3D Land". How many other games are there that were just called "<series name> 64"?

A lot. Anyways, I'll always just call this game "A Super Mario Tail".

Games that refuse to use Gameplay effectively to do anything are like films that refuse to use cinematography in film to do anything.

Don't forget all the games with the "super" prefix.
