Nintendolife

The Wii U isn't just an upgrade, it's an entirely new console. This is the most important bit of information in a message Nintendo has sent out to Wii owners, emphasizing that there is in fact a difference between the two systems.

It's time to discover Wii U.

Wii U is the all-new home console from Nintendo. It's not just an upgrade - it's an entirely new system that will change the way you and your family experience games and entertainment.

This isn't the first time that the company has had to let potential consumers know their Wii U's from their Wii's, as a promotional flyer titled 'Why Wii U?' was found at this year's PAX East.

Global President of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, stated in Nintendo's latest Financial Results Briefing that many people considered the GamePad to be a peripheral for the Wii, and the company hadn't "tried hard enough" to make people understand the system.

Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to Wii. We feel deeply responsible for not having tried hard enough to have consumers understand the product.

Iwata has promised that the company will continue to make numerous efforts to help people understand its product value, while adding to the Wii U's software library.

Spoiler

Hopefully they'll get the message across that the Wii U is not an upgrade to the Wii U. Thoughts?

A step in the right direction, but I do wonder how many people still turn on their Wiis.

Some people always have a cellphone on them. I'm so awesome I always have a 3DS.

I'm amazed they're using that service to actually advertise for themselves.

They usually forget about those types of systems they have made available for themselves.

And how many people will actually read the message?

Fun fact. when the Wii U was first announced, i actually thought it was a handheld that could be used on the T.V.

I think it`s a really good idea. They could create some sort of vídeo too to better explain the diferences and let people download it to Wii.

Maybe they should do the same with 3DSs. Lots of young gamers out there who don`t really know what Wii U is and what games/services are there for Wii U.

Just make a freaking commercial to advertise this!!!!!! No one plays their wii's anymore! It died a month after I got it. Yeah I played it once for zelda and Mario galaxy and smash bros and metroid. But I never consistantly played it. And the majority of people who bought the wii don't play it anymore. Use commercials to advertise, not a dumb message.

I was once known here as KillerMario, but since I really like Banjo-Kazooie, I changed my display name to show them my respect :)

The Wii U needs a name change its the only way Nintendo can get the message clear as they suck at marketing.

Dunno, but I did...

Is this a first batch of advertisement from Nintendo? Are they starting massive advertisement now that people started hyping for next gen?

The marketing will get there eventually now, I hate to speak too soon but it looks like things are starting to slowly pick up.

That's never going to happen. Its just not practical to change the name now.

Did the 3DS had this much confusion at launch?

Did the 3DS had this much confusion at launch?

Kind of, there were a lot of people confused about if it was a 3D DS, or a new system. But I think that since the Wii was a huge success, and tons of people knew about it. That resulted in more people being confused about whether or not the Wii U was a new system.

As for this ad, they could have done better. Maybe explain some of the Wii U's features that the Wii doesn't have. Like Miiverse,Tvii, improved online, etc. Putting a large focus on the Gamepad only confuses casual consumers more.
