Yes, it does. The bad thing about playing online (on the Wii U) is that you can't change your characters or invite friends. It's pretty annoying.

After you play a match, you can only do a rematch with the same characters. You can't change them unless you leave the match and rejoin.

yeah, it's pretty stupid. i had the 360 version, but i bought the wii u one too.
