MNN

Nintendo of America president was asked by Forbes how he expects Wii U will compete against the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One. Specifically, Fils-Aime pointed out that both the PlayStation 2 and the original Wii were less powerful than the competition, but that didn’t stop either of those consoles dominating the marketplace. However, both consoles had a huge array of games along with some notable classics. Here’s what he had to say.

“The processing power of the hardware really doesn’t matter. I say that with confidence looking at the most recent generation of home consoles where the Wii, which the broad industry looked at and said “boy, that seems to be underpowered” but sold 100 million units globally. And the consumer saw the innovation of the Wii Remote and the active gameplay we offered.”

“Even if you look at the generation before that, it was Sony’s product that was underpowered compared to the other two home consoles and yet they won that generation. In the end it comes down to the games. The games drive the install base, the games excite the consumer. We feel excited about the games not just from a first party perspective, But from third party as well.”

It takes a lot to admit Sony won the GC generation (in terms of sales, don't hit me).

I think coming in dead last by a large margin makes it rather easy to admit.

It's simply fact.

Difference being, PS2 excelled at having third party games.

Nintendo/Reggie desperately trying to put out the flames !

The PS2 was completely different it came off the back of the PS1 & that was HUGE & most people that had a PS1 went on to buy a PS2, it was up against the DreamCast, Xbox & GameCube,

Sega were on their last legs, Microsoft were new in the console market.

I can see where he's coming, PS1 was half the power of N64 and PS2 being significantly weaker than Gamecube however both Playstation consoles were power houses when it came to third party support.

Its games that sell consoles, it always has been this way & it always will be.

Say what you want about Nintendo games being good, people want choice & the WiiU has limited choice of games, the WiiU is eight months in now & there should be new games coming out every week !

GCN sold 20 million, while Xbox sold 24 million. I'd say GCN and Xbox were pretty close.

Dreamcast 10 million.

Difference being, PS2 excelled at having third party games.

PS2 survived on third party exclusives and their own first party. The nicest selling game, though, were GTA's and Grand Trisimo games. If you look at all the best selling games, most were launched ad exclusives and then moved to other platforms or were always exclusive (first party and FFX).

So yes, it survived on third party, but Nintendo has more first party IP's. They just need to make them.

He could also have mentioned Snes winning, PS1 winning, NDS winning. All underpowered and still won.

By the way, about time someone publicly mentions that consoles can win even if underpowered.

I love their confidence in their console. No matter what, they never doubt it. Makes me more glad I got one.

Well, the context here is important. It is a Forbes comment, not a comment to IGN. I do not think for a moment that Nintendo is thinking a Wii situation has a chance, or that this is what we have now. If anything, there are odd parallels to the PS2 launch, well somewhat, if you grasp at straws.

The PS2 had an amazing library of games, the Wii sales were hugely increased by middle aged parents who thought it would be fun to play Wii Sports with their kids and ended up throwing it in the closet for the rest of eternity.

The Wii U costs $299 at launch with a controller that has a huge touch screen on it, do people really think it's going to rival the other next-gen systems in terms of power? They've shown nothing to prove it yet and I don't see it happening.

I understand that it's not all about power (although if you're telling yourself that power doesn't matter, I don't know what to tell you). The Wii U has a terrible library of games so far, and even though there's going to be a ton of Nintendo titles coming out by next year, I've totally lost interest due to the fact that their franchises are just becoming really bland to me. Mario Kart 8's big gimmick is the fact that the courses make you drive upside down and on walls... Super Mario 3D World is just a huge damn slap in the face, we were expecting this epic, grand adventure and we just got a 3DS title in HD with multiplayer slapped on to it (Oh, no online multiplayer, no excuse for that crap) and Super Smash looks like the same thing in HD with new characters. All that on top of the fact that 3rd party developers won't even support the damn thing (with reason not to) made me sell my Wii U in exchange for a PS4 pre-order and I haven't regretted it one bit. Gaming this gen is on PC and PS4 for me.

This is coming from someone who is typically a Nintendo fanboy, I'm not bashing the system for the sake of it, I'm just telling it how I see it.

While its true that being the most powerful hardware does not determine success, its still not a benefit in being the least powerful.  So far, its hard to argue the idea that the Wii U would most likely have sold better had they gone with a controller Pro instead of the gamepad, and sold the console for $199.  Nintendo still needs to hit home why the gamepad is such a big deal, and why consumers will want it.  Nintendo Land shows off some asymetrical gameplay that is a lot of fun for local multi player, but Nintendo hasnt done a good job of making that known to the mass market.  The offscreen play should be another thing Nintendo needs to market.  The Wii U's marketing has been terrible.  Not only do a lot of people still not realize the Wii U is an entirely new console, but they have now idea what makes the gamepad special.

The PS3 was able to get things turned around after a terrible first 18 months, so maybe Nintendo can do it to, but third party support for 2014 will be determined this holiday.  If the Wii U is selling and third party titles are selling at a reasonable level, then multi plats will surely be there in 2014.  Overall I am starting to see the Wii U as being a niche product.  Best case scenario the Wii U will have an install base of 8 million units at the end of the year, pretty much on pace to do Gamecube numbers, maybe N64 numbers if they support the Wii U with first party software for all five years, unlike the Gamecube and Wii that were getting very little towards the end of their lifetime.
