That probably should have been one of my first steps, eh?
Unfortunately, it's working just fine with another device (just tested it with the tv).
I do still hear sound through the headphones plugged into the splitter itself, so the wii u should be fine sending the signal and it being split between audio and visual, not sure why the computer monitor won't detect it, outside of the monitor's capabilities (I think it should be able to get the signal from the wiiu, but not really sure how to check)
Edit: the monitor does have HDMI with HDCP, not sure if required for the wii u but it does have it, if it is.
Edit 2: Thinking back, now I remember hooking my wiiu up to this same monitor before. Then I just used the gamepad sound (I got the splitter for any potential games that don't have the gamepad-only sound setting, to not miss out on audio not sent through the gamepad, as well as for any future consoles). So it should really be getting the signal (splitter video works with another device, wii u to monitor hdmi works, just not both)
Edit 3:
Got it to work, using a hdmi-dvi cable
Setup:
This splitter: J-Tech Digital (Registered US Trademark) Premium Quality HDMI to HDMI + Audio (SPDIF + 3.5mm Stereo) Audio Extractor Converter

Wii u HDMI into splitter. Headphones plugged into splitter for audio. HDMI end plugged into splitter, dvi end plugged into monitor, for video. 720p output from WiiU (it's not picking up the 1080 p using this cable)
Thanks for the help as well, always nice when something works! I'm glad Im not stuck playing on a tiny screen
