So I am looking at purchasing a Wii U but I am not sure what to think of it. On one hand, it tempts me more than a ps4 and an xbox one due to its free online, nintendos interesting vibrant ips, (read: NOT monotonous generic military corridor shooters) the innovative gamepad and potentially the estore as I would love to see some of the exclusive digital titles nintendo possesses. (although I couldn't find much info on these outside of A Hat in Time and pokemon rumble.)

However, I am aware the social features are limited, as are the amount of games in general and with that said, the games along with the console seem extremely pricey. (the premium console alone retails for around $500NZD where I live.) I was also disheartened when I heard that the estore contains no n64/gamecube titles along with no gamecube backwards compatibility (this would of instantly sold the system for me) and that the systems portability is restricted since the gamepad isn't actually the console.

Currently where I am living I have an OUYA, a 360, a PS3, a Wii and a gaming laptop, and I wanted to hear from Wii U owners about whether they feel that they made a good purchase, what some of the pros and cons of the system are, and if the system is worth my investment. Thanks guys.

I think everyone can agree that they love the gamepad, and love the off-tv play. I haven't regretted my decision, I've had great fun with it. The games are only 50-60$ full price here, but I guess they can be expensive where you live.  I wouldn't expect much 3rd party / indie exclusives unless this christmas takes off. I am slightly disapointed with Mii Verse though, its still needs many improvements, but I play games alone, and usually don't care about the social aspects.

What games would you recommend? Preferably outside of the typical recommendations?

top games for wiiu imo are ZombiU, pikmin 3, rayman legends, and the best of the best, wonderful 101!  of course windwaker, mario, and nintendo land are great too but those 4 mentioned are just GOLD! except wonderful 101.... that's platinum.

Thinking back to November of last year when I picked up my Wii U, it was a meh/okay purchase at the time. There were next to no games that I liked. I am pretty picky when it comes to games, though. I only really like first party Nintendo stuff. :P Now, though, I think it was a good buy. It's cheaper (at least in the US), there's a decent amount of games out, and there's a lot more on the way. If any of the available or announced titles interest you, I'd definitely say go for it. :)

The social features aren't limited.

Considering Miiverse they're probably actually better.

I for one don't regret the purchase of this system because it has/will have a ton of exclusives by next year and the gamepad is great stuff. Being able to stream video through it is awesome and the browser is real fast and easy to navigate. Miiverse ain't great but the potential is there hopefully Nintendo can take advantage of this. Still I would advise you to wait at least till December.

I've said this on another thread but I think that people should wait on buying this system due to not having enough games and I feel by December the system will have enough to warrant the purchase. Then the following year is looking like its gonna be fantastic for Wiiu so yeah.
Games I would say are for sure buys are Pikmin3, Wind Waker,Need for Speed(best version),Monster Hunter, and Lego City. There's several other games but I feel those are either better on last gen systems or are a mix bag(ZombiU). Still there's a new Sonic and Mario games coming out and those look fantastic ; also dues ex and watch dogs seem to be better in wii u compared to last gen. Also a lot of indie stuff is coming soon and some that's come out is real good stuff. Again by December those games will be out and I feel the system will look a whole lot better.

Miiverse was better around launch, it's on a low right now because there are lots of people (like me) who haven't used it in ages.

Miiverse used to be filled with artists in every community, but now it's empty.

I hope it will pick up again when more of the killer apps launch (sharing MK8 videos? F YEAH!).

A console is only as interesting as its games. So far, there are 3 exclusives that are better than what you can expect to get on a Sony or Microsoft console (imo): ZombiU, Pikmin 3 and the Wonderful 101. There will be more. Regarding the gamepad: yes, it's a great controller, but personally, I would rather have seen an evolution of the wiimote and nunchuk.

Can't you access the Wii eshop through Wii mode? There are N64 titles on there.

You must only buy one if you love Nintendo IPs. The Gamepad is amazing, but it's getting ignored by third party so it's not worth it if you don't like Mario, Zelda, DK, Metroid etc.
No sig.

Wonderful 101(unlike anything else out or you probably played before). Lego city(just plain fun and lots to see and do). Zombi U( great atmosphere different from most run and shoot zombi games. Well made). Trine 2( IMO best launch game. Amazing graphics fun to play). So many more but you said not typical ones so that's what I thought of.

I wouldn't have bought the Wii U (or any console) for $500 USD, and probably not for $418, which is the current conversion of $500 NZD to USD.  Is the Zelda WWHD bundle available where you are?  That would increase the value some.

With that said, I'm very happy with my Zelda bundle for the price I paid ($300 USD).  I disagree that the amount of games available is limited.  I don't have enough time to play the games I'd like to be able to play on my Wii U.  Certain online features feel limited but Miiverse is mostly awesome.

I think it's still too early to tell what will happen with N64/GC games on the eShop.  Who knows?

As for the system's portability being "restricted," I'm not really sure what you mean.  It's a hell of a lot more "portable" than the other consoles because of the Gamepad but it's still a home console and not a portable handheld.  Although it is still "portable" in the sense that you don't need a TV and can use it anywhere you can plug in the console (I saw a picture of someone playing it on a plane with the console plugged in and using the gamepad, not sure if that was real or fake).  The PS4 may eventually be more "portable" if all PS4 games can be played on Vita, but that also requires buying another device.  Let me just say also that I can't overstate how awesome I think the off-screen gamepad feature is, especially given that I didn't have to buy another device like with PS4.

To sum up: I am overall very happy with the purchase but probably would've waited if it were $400+ USD.

My only complaint with the Wii U is the OS I completely hate it. Its has this screen called the Wara Wara plaza. You can view different people experieences with games and comments they have made on Miiverse about said game. Its use less to me and something I never use. Other than that the gamepad is amazing and off-tv play IMO is here to stay. A lot of debate has gone on about the technical abilities of this console. Last gen, next gen, or inbetween? The Wii U is a balanced and efficient designed console. It was designed to be an "in between" console or "stop gap" if you would. 2014 will be the year a lot of Wii U naysayers eat crow for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Nintendo is based around making games that are fun to play and that's not going to change. The Wii U fall lineup is being drastically overlooked. Really starting from August of this year through what we know is coming through February of next year you have every type of game you could want to play. Get a Wii U and get it now.

WARNING: this console was made to play games and have fun. Focus on that and not the other things the gaming media and fanboys will try and focus on to make the console seem irrelevant.

Nah unfortunately they don't sell that bundle here and if they did, knowing our sub par retailers, they would charge extortionately for it.

In regards to gamecube games on the estore, it would be amazing, but honestly I don't trust nintendo to have the brains to implement that, and if by some miracle I am wrong they'd probably only run at 480p.

In terms of portability, my first impressions of the device were that the gamepad WAS the console, and not merely a gamepad, meaning I could take it to work with me etc like a DS for example. I also heard very few games can be played without the TV on with the gamepad alone.

I may have found a clearance sale for $299 NZD here but obviously stock is limited, but I am considering it..

I would be happy to have Gamecube games running at 480p and available to play on the gamepad like Wii games now are.  Would you also want them to somehow upscale them?

As for portability, that sounds like a poor job of marketing on Nintendo's part - not making it clear that there is a gamepad AND a console.

Where did you hear that very few games can be played on the gamepad alone?  All the games I currently own can be played on just the gamepad.  And off the top of my head I can't think of any games (that I don't own) that can't be played that way. Do you know if there's a list or something of games that have to be played on the TV?
