Do you guys use the stat-modifying moves that your Pokemon have (like Leer, Tail Whip, etc)?  Or do you usually forget them when you need room for a new attack?

I used them in Emerald but in this game I was so over-leveled I didn't bother most of the time. I did keep Calm Mind though because I like the way it looks.

Why doesn’t Mario have an absurd crotch buldge holding in his 10 inch slice of manhood? Why doesn’t Yoshi look like a Fist of the North Starcharacter.

For the main game, I usually forget about them. But for competitive teams, they're absolutely essential. Swords Dance is my favorite to use.

You mean for battling online against other players?

I always forget them as I go through the games, but when I play competitively I always make movesets that include those types of moves. They are critical to having a good team and winning battles.

Usually I don't use them when playing the main game with a few exceptions like Carracosta's shell smash, I loved that move.

It depends on the pokemon for me. Honedge for example, is a great physical attacker, with Fury Attack and the ghost-type version of Quick Attack (can't remember the name), and since it has good defense, I use Swords Dance to make it more powerful without worrying about the opponent doing a lot of damage to it. However, it's really slow, so I have a move to sharply increase speed (can't remember what it's called again, I'm really rusty with this) to help out a bit. Skiddo is a decent mixed attacker from what I've seen so far, so I use Growth to increase Physical and Special Attack to help out. Usually, I worry about not doing damage right away, so I usually load it with offensive moves, but these are two exceptions for me.

Why are these moves so much more important in competitive battles?

How does the strategy for those usually go, anyway?  Since real people aren't like the dumb trainers and can react to type weaknesses, it seems like it could just be a bunch of pokemon swapping.

It is a bunch of pokemon swapping, that's why the entry hazards like stealth rock, toxic spikes, and spikes are essential for making people think twice about switching. the idea is to just anticipate your opponent's reaction to what you are going to do.

You usually create a team that works well together, that covers each pokemon's weaknesses and have pokemon to offensively hit hard, and to have supporting/tanking pokemon that can take hard hits for you. stat boosting moves come in to play when say you have a volcarona with quiver dance which boosts sp attack sp defense and speed. along with fiery dance, bug buzzm and hurricane. your opponent has a forretress that would be wrecked by firey dance( and is slower so they can't attack first so they have to switch out. you would then use quiver dance to boosts volcarona's stats while they switch out. That quiver dance is essential for volcarona because it has a base 100 speed. meaning it's fast-ish, but there are a lot faster. quiver dance allows it to out speed nearly anything that isn't a quick attack variant so faster things don't come in, survive a hit and KO it. plus the special attack boost makes him hit things that take neutral damage a lot harder.

Hopefully ^this gives you an idea.
