Anyone know if it's possible to have save data on the Wii U system memory but the game itself on external hdd? If so, is there any disadvantage?
Game and save data in different places?

Yes, I think it's possible. There's no disadvantage. It's just a hassle moving the datas around.

Ok, I was just thinking it'd be useful if the hdd died for some reason. Then you would at least have your save game files and could just re-download the game

I thought it already did that? Was not aware save data was also stored on external media.
It must be based on where you first started a game as I started LEGO City Undercover before I added the USB stick and it still loads the save game off the console.
