Here's a story I didn't see coming. According to rumors, (jip there it is) Nintendo is developing an educational only Nintendo tablet running on Android.

That doesn't look like focus to me, I wished Nintendo would devote resources and time on core busines. New ventures might pay of but it can destroy the focus too.

Come to think of it, why did Nintendo choose to build an own OS for their 3ds and WiiU. Wouldn't be much smarter to use an android licence (or even Apple's iOS) as a base and build an Nintendo gameconsole layer upon that? Sure, building it yourself has a better connection to your ability to keep in control... But it's not Nintendo's core business, building an OS.

Anyway, here's the link

You will only find IOS on Apple hardware, it's not open source. Android (Google) is already established to run well as a mobile platform and we've seen Nintendo and Google team up with the Maps App on the Wii U.

With this educational tablet, perhaps Nintendo wants to have google services available rather then writing their own email, doc, and standard apps that are already available and polished by google. It would be silly to write, from the gound up an email app when something like gmail is already there, same goes for a maps app etc.

I can also see Nintendo perhaps having a separate market place for their own mobile apps specifically designed for this market.

No offense, but that's a sonic rainboom idea. Android os isn't the best at resource management, and it would cause Nintendo to not have any control. The current Wii U and 3DS OS is designed so that the game gets a priority to all resources, let alone being optimized for very different hardware. And with Android OS Nintendo runs the risk of the system being hacked very easily. Though admittedly I could see Nintendo licensing a rtos such as Blackberry's QNX, that would be a HUGE boon to system speed and smoothness. But that's a kernel, not a whole OS. Android is simply not designed to be a general purpos os. Have you seen any non-phone/tablet implementations that were not terrible or at the bare minimum not great?

I think the OP should change the title of the thread as the story/info available doesn't talk about replacing the current OS with android. It specifically talks about a tablet running android. Basically a Nintendo designed tablet, running android, with Nintendo software/apps. Otherwise this conversation is pointless.

It's called Research & Development. It's usually done when someone wants to test an idea.

How can a tablet be "educational"? Will it be used like Dora, or stuff for school etc.?

90% sure this is bullsh**, but then again, with Nintendo releasing a thing called a 2DS and them not responding... who knows.

Apps, Games used as a tool for learning. Funny though since google itself just announced this: http://googleenterpr...oogle-play.html

Amazing how the internet is dangerous, in my excitement I released information that should not, Now I'm out of the project who liked!<br />

<br />Looks like it was real.<br />

<br />I'd imagine they don't use android for 3ds and wii u because this is a result from them trying to merge their handheld and console r&amp;d effort after the wii u was launched.<br />
I fully expect a tablet next gen from Nintendo.

I'm almost sure that there's something wrong with this. Either he was lying, or he's just too valuable to fire.

I'm not a huge fan of Android- BUT I think their next handheld should have the capability to run Android Apps.  I'd imagine that Nintendo won't release or even announce a release of a new handheld for another two years at the earliest.  By then the price of components, namely memory will come down so much that this might not be an issue.

Android app compatibility is a different story.

Nothing wrong with Nintendo using android. Saves time and resources developing basic stuff.

But you can bet it won't be stock and will likely be one of the most customized versions anywhere

IF they do it at all.

I don't mind Nintendo branching out.
The gaming/profit landscape is changing.

Sony and ms have other major businesses that keep them going.

Nintendo could leverage their tech expertise in embedded systems to come up with viable products that would be worthwhile.

But they'll likely need to restructure... Unless iwatas recent executive shuffle was hinting at that.

UPDATE: A Nintendo representative has informed IGN that there is no employee at Nintendo by the name of Nando Monterazo now or at the time of the tweets.

No need to worry guys :)

Receiving the changes to a new coding system for tablet-style hardware for Nintendo games....

@chris_utah3ds @desero It is, a tablet with educational games for children with Nintendo characters....

Amazing how the internet is dangerous, in my excitement I released information that should not, Now I'm out of the project who liked!

Another site is suggesting he might not be using his real name, but looking at his tweets, it sounds pretty bogus to me. Nintendo most certainly has a very strict policy about employee interactions on social media sites, and it wouldn't be hard to track down this guy's real identity if he were to post something this stupid.

Still, it's not exactly the worst idea in the world. The handheld market is shrinking more and more each year and Nintendo should be thinking about ways to expand their business.
