This isn't a secret... Super Mario 3D World should of sold much more though, I'm kind of scared that it did that bad for a Mario game...

They hate sharing sweaty controllers.

It didn't do bad.

You have to figure that about 1 million Wii U units sold in Japan. The game sold 100K copies, that's a 10% attach rate, which is phenomenal.

Just to compare, Galaxy 2 sold around 325K copies in its first week in Japan, on a pre-established Wii userbase probably somewhere in the 10 million range (In Japan)...or even higher.

Yeah, but people don't have the ability to illegally download Super Mario 3D World yet.

did they include digital dl sales as well? If they didn't then it's possible it sold quite a bit more, who knows?

It sold really well, it was number 2, after the new Final Fantasy XIII game for PS3, and that after having been out for 4 days. On a console that has sold 1 million in Japan. The interesting part is how it affects hardware sales. It seems to do that only to some extent, but the Wii U is selling 20000/week in Japan now, as opposed to around 5000/week most of the year.

Just for reference, this is by far the lowest first week sales of any 3d mario in Japan, ever.

Looks like its all up to Murrica now.

That's pretty damning, but with the 3DS domination in Japan can you really expect much else? I'm curious how the other two systems are going to sell over there.

Somehow I knew what this was about when I saw the title.

I hate to say it, but I do find it quite funny that this is the worst selling 3D Mario platformer at launch. Hopefully it will send a message to Nintendo.

Given Wii U`s state in Japan, this was expected - although i wanted double the sales numbers!

We shouldn`t have expected more from Mario when the console itself struggled since launch. Only now it´s putting up decent numbers.

That`s why Nintendo needs to come up, for the next generation, with a HW strategy that allows for handheld and home console to work as one. If they can get the handheld to actually be a controller for the home console, whilst offering a gamepad in a separate SKU, they can start selling the new home console way cheaper and have millions of handheld players as potential customers. You could start playing a game on the handheld, save your progresso and resume playing at home on the big screen and vice versa.

Not to mention that droughts would be overcomed.

There would need to be 3x as many digital purchases as physical for it to reach the average week 1 of past 3d mario launches.

Haven't they been in decline for 20 years?
50 mario platformers in 2 years surely can't help either, not good Iwata.

No, not at all, even ignoring the 3ds monster, the last galaxy sold 360k its opening week.

Galaxy was such a terrible game though.
It probably made people stop wanting to buy new Mario games.

The Galaxy games were awesome!

But very much overrated.

Which is now why Nintendo seems to be stuck thinking that somehow Mario platformers can only fit into three categories: New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario 3D ..., and Super Mario Galaxy.

It's very sad that Nintendo thinks that those who aren't satisfied with Super Mario 3D World are wanting Galaxy 3 instead. No, the next Mario platformer needs to have an original theme, at the very least! No more sequels! Because Mario sequels just feel like rehashes most of the time (at least, recent Mario sequels do).
