Hi, i am new Wii U user, bought it for my kids (also hooked on it 
)
my kids are young, constantly juggling DVD and switching games. I am afraid they will scratch the DVD soon. I know it is illegal to copy DVD, but can i atleast copy games to system memory so i dont have to keep changing DVDs?

Download them from the eshop. Which means buying them again.
Or teach your kids how to take care of stuff.

Think about it.
If You were allowed to do this, why would anyone keep the Disc?
They wouldn't. They'd download the game, sell the disc, and then the next person would do the same.

Currently there's no means to copy a disk to internal memory. And on the consoles that do, they all currently require you to insert the disk before the game will play.

they are not just normal dvds, it's a proprietary high-density optical disc developed just for the WiiU, it will have loads of copy protection, the WiiU cannot play dvd's anyway.

Wii U like Wii and Gamecube uses a proprietary disc. Wii discs were similar to to DVD and held the same amount of data 4.7 GB single layer with the ability to do double layer. Wii U uses once again a proprietary disc that is similar (other than some minor physical differences) to blu ray and each layer holds 25GB..don't think any Wii U games use double layer discs yet. Since Gamecube Nintendo has had a strong relationship with Panasonic (who is also a partner in blu ray) and has helped develop and manufacture the discs and the disc drives for each console. (hell even at Nintendo they use Panasonic TV's)Wii could play DVDs but was software disabled to avoid royalty costs. You can enable it in Homebrew channel. Wii U I doubt has the same ability as it was imitially planned to have Wii play DVDs using an external device.
What really helped sink SEGA aside from themselves making mistakes from 32X-Saturn which hurt development costs for DC...anyhoo what helped sink SEGA was Saturn and Dreamcast were they were super easy to burn and pirate discs. Despite making their own disc with GD Rom (stood for GB disc as it held 1.2 GB) could still be slapped in a CD burner. PS1 has an issue with this as well. That was Nintendo's biggest fear if they went CD would kill them with piracy(tho kinda funny if they went CD PS1 would have likely gone the way of 3d0 and CDi)
NES wanted to avoid what plagued Atari and decided to only allow licensed games on the hardware so those pirated carts and companies like Tengen had legal trouble with Nintendo.
Nintendo has always been deathly afraid of piracy and always super protective. Which the paranoia has hurt and helped them. If Nintendo even feels the slightest of piracy threat they will avoid it. So we don't have installs and and maybe accounts tied to specific consoles and such. Nothing made can't be broken and of course piracy of Nintendo games on every system but much less of it. It often causes headaches for honest users like us.

Yeah i was pretty sure you were referring to the app that transfers the game save (but won't transfer unless you have the game installed, which is a catch-22 if you want to sell the physical copy to help pay for the digital version)
