Hey...

 

I'm looking at picking up myself a Wii U console and I'm planning on getting the new Mario Kart, Smash Brothers and Mario Party. I don't really intend to play any others at present.

 

There's now three controllers... and I'm a touch confused about which ones I will need? Will I be able to use the Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus controllers with new Wii U games or will they require the Pro Controller? Also is there any input to multiple gamepads? Is it basically just a pro controller with a screen?

 

Perhaps someone has an idea?

The pro controller is just a gamepad without a screen. The advantage of that controller is longer battery time, and the ability to use more than one, because that is not possible with the gamepad at the moment. Regarding the wiimotes, that's what you'd use if you play multiplayer in most cases, but I think the "plus" feature is not used in any Wii U games (so far, with the possible exception of the reissues of Wii Sports from the eshop), so an old regular wiimote would probably be good enough.

 

To play multiplayer in a game like Smash Bros., you don't want to use wiimotes, so you will probably have the options of using the Pro Controller (expensive) or the Classic Controller (Pro) to connect to the wiimote. This is a nice and comfortable controller, much like the Pro Controller, but much cheaper.

I see... So it isn't possible to play multiplayer with Pro Controllers? I need the Wiimotes?

What exactly is the "plus" feature? I just thought it was more precise or something.

Sorry if I was a bit unclear: Yes, you can use more than one Pro Controller.

 

The "plus" thing makes the wiimote more precise, but the software needs to use the plus feature. For instance, the only good games for the Wii that uses the plus feature are Red Steel 2 and Zelda: Skyward Sword (and Wii Sports Resort if you like that type of games). In other games, the wiimote plus works just as the wiimote.

 

But do try the classic controller pro, I really like it. (The "classic controller", non-pro, is the same as the CCP, but laid out more like an SNES controller with analog sticks.)

I see, but from Googling, it's clear I'll need a Wiimote to connect to the classic controller. I may not buy any of the Wiimotes because I don't think I'll be playing any Wii games. I may stick with the pro controller, but we'll see. Appreciate the help =)

Yeah I'm pretty sure all the games you mentioned will let you use Wii mote plus. Personally, the only one which I would use a wii remote plus with is Mario Kart because Mario Kart wii was so much fun with the Wii Wheel.

If you restrict yourself to only play these 3 games, you will probably manage without wiimotes, if you get enough pro controllers. The best thing is probably to just buy the controllers you need when the need arises, and now you know the differences between the controllers. Glad I could help you, sorry about being too wordy...

Stick to the pro controller its the best controller ever made imltho! Great qualtity, battery life and works so much better than ps3 or xbox360 or classic controller.

Generally they will all support the Gamepad, then either the Pro controller or the Wiimote. And the classic controllers too, but a little less likely.

Would they really not support the new controller specifically for the Wii U? I think they would have to.

So what I'll do is well wait until the games I want come out before buying any controllers. However... I wonder if I should I buy the console now? I'm buying second hand and can get a pretty decent deal atm. Or should I wait it out for an even better deal in a couple of months...Mmm... decisions... decisions...
