In the absence of a Wii U port of Sonic Generations, quite the rumour has broken out over an entirely original Sonic project for the console titled Sonic Dimensions. Now, if you’ve been reading the blog for a while, you’ll know the drill with rumours – no matter how fantastic they sound (a certain Emily Rogers comes to mind), they should never be held for truth.
With that little disclaimer out of the way, let’s dig in – this is a juicy one.
Sonic Dimensions is a spiritual successor to the Wii-exclusive Sonic Colors. Although it is not clear yet whether the game will be a Wii U exclusive or not, it will supposedly “take advantage of many Wii U specific capabilities.” The storyline revolves around Dr. Eggman splitting the space-time continuum as a result of his latest hare-brained scheme to take over the world, and Sonic with it. Each “split” Sonic will be a different colour and will have his own special abilities, which forms the crux of the game’s mechanics.
We have some details on every Sonic variation’s attributes, with the exception of the green one. They are as follows:
- blue – a uniting “ghost”
- red – slow speed, short jump, ability to create explosions
- orange – something along the lines of Big the Cat – slow and lumbering until he powers up
- purple – move platforms and float
- yellow – fastest Sonic, but also must vulnerable (and it’s not Super Sonic)
The dimensional split has apparently affected every single character in the game, from Sonic to his friends. A kind and caring version of Dr. Eggman will supposedly guide Sonic on his quest, and an evil version of Amy Rose might have a showdown with the hedgehog of her dreams.
But by far the most interesting part of the rumour is that Nintendo staff are collaborating with Sega on level design, along with most of the original crew from Sonic Colors. Nintendo don’t work on a game together with third-party studios very often, so if this last part is true, Sega must be onto something special.
If it’s all true, that is. Once again, I cannot stress enough that this is still purely a rumour. But it’s a scrumptious one that I wouldn’t mind turning out to be true.
