Can someone explain why digital download prices are so high?  Why do they even start out at the same price as physical media?  And why do they stay so high for so long, often seeming never to come down?  Right now W101 is $23 brand new at Amazon vs. $60 on the eShop.  I'm not one of those people who has to have a physical copy to "feel it in my hands" or whatever.  I am intrigued by the minimalism of going all digital but can't justify it because of the pricing.

Retailers have access to multiple sources for their shipments, many of whom offer discounts on stock they want rid of.
This is why "bomba" games happen.

An EA game is expected to sell 10 million, only 6 million pre-orders sell-through, 1 million week-1 buys.
EA has the 10 million it estimated would sell day 1, and also produced 2 million for week 2 sales.
Now they have 5 million units to sell this week, or they're showing a loss in their department.
They offer their wholesaler 2 million at the normal price, and an extra million at say half that.

Something like that.

Realistically, the eShop is controlled by Nintendo, or the publisher.
They don't lose any money by holding stock when it's virtual and doesn't exist until it's purchased.
A physical stock however, will cost money over time if nobody buys it.
You liquidate your physical stock, to free up the physical space it takes in your storehouse, or storefront.
sometimes you're willing to even take a loss on what you purchased the stock for to get rid of it and have the chance of selling something new.

Probably some unicorn tongue excuse that you're paying for the convenience or something.

They probably don't think that lowering the price will cause sales to increase much. And they'll lose a lot of money by selling the game for a lower price to the market they monopolize, the digital market. They know those wanting digital and those wanting the game immediately are going to pay the $60 no matter what. And bargain hunters are going to buy the game off amazon anyway because even if the price is dropped in half they will still buy the game off Amazon for $23.
