Nintendo just needs to pump out one of their more adult toned games every now and then, at least to balance their family friendly/kid/casual crowd. No one is asking for a drastic shift, especially not their Japanese developer partners.

They do have all the excuses to stop making platformers though.

the key word something they have not been doing they kind of forgot they have other gamers that like other games. No reason its been this long without F-Zero, Starfox, and new Ip's that are more than mini games and RPG's that are geard more towards the Japanese market.

Yes, he said it.  There are real adults, and there are the modern selfish, narcissistic manchildren who want to spend their entire lives pretending like they're still in college.

And now that I just finished putting my daughter to bed, I think I'll go play "kiddie Nintendo games." :)

O.o

So I have to be married with kids to be a "real" adult.

With your logic, who needs college!

On topic: Nintendo doesn't need to make "adult" (lol) games. They just need to make good games. Notice the plural there.

I feel that this whole "adult" video games phase will end soon. It's already over saturated as it is. It's just a matter of time until big budget games crash. Indie developers will be responsible for the next big thing. And the cycle will repeat.

But Nintendo can only benefit with becoming a little "westernized".

What Japanese developers are those Sega and Platinum Games? Two developers out of how many?

They have 10 billion dollars in the bank. Probably less because of the Wii U now tho

Yeah, and after 1 year of being Sony, they have 7 billion, 2 years, 4 billion, 3 years 2 billion, 4 years, all that money's gone.
It's not feasible.
Maybe after they expand their business into "QoL" products like rfid tags and chip implants for medical companies, they can think about pooling their money and wasting it on getting the 1-hit wonder every 5 years.

No, they dont. Those games you are referring to are manchild games. They target teens, who dont understand what 'adult' is, and 'adults' wwho have yet to grow up and are suffering arrested development, and are going to end up living in a van down by the river.

Real adults have families children and responsibilities, such as playing games that are appropriate for their children to watch and play with them. And as long as they are doing that, might as well be some of the best games ever made.

We already have two identical machines, why do these morons keep wanting everything to be exactly the same?

You are very very bitter because you're a minority.

Nintendo doesn't need to westernize to that extent. They do need to be aggressive enough with their next console to actually get third party support. This doesn't mean they need to beat the online infrastructure of Microsoft and Xbox Live, but they do need to invest in a network they can future proof and have key features like voice chat etc. I'd honestly be ok with paying $30-$50 a year if it meant having a good online network like the other companies, but that's just personal preference. that stuff does require money to maintain you know.

As Nollog said, they would lose all their money if they went that direction completely, but there are some obvious changes they can make that won't cost them much that will make them competitive. They really need to launch last, or at least reveal last this next generation so they can make sure they have tech similar enough for third parties to port most games fairly easily. This way they can make sure they have similar architecture (x86 , powerPC. etc).

Another obvious change and in my opinion the biggest flaw of the Wii U is bringing back analog triggers. this one speaks for itself. Those alone open up the entire racing and fps genres to Nintendo systems. Neither of those changes will cost them billions of dollars and they can reap huge rewards.

As for something I would like to see Nintendo do that is unique, but could be competitive if marketed correctly and planned for financially, is to develop a technology that basically lets servers dynamically switch between configurations for various games. Basically have a server network where servers rotate between the settings for hosting matches of various games. Basically servers wouldn't have to be retired for one game, or even one generation, because the settings for every game that is on a Nintendo device had server settings that just get called and set up prior to a match.

^that was very hypothetical. let me know what you think of the concept without considering cost etc.

Honestly? I'm not really that interested in third party games that much. I like the games the Wii U has, and I enjoy the Indy games a lot. it would be awesome if Nintendo could convince Valve to port The Orange Box to the Wii U though.

They are perceived as more "adult" because they are story driven with real-life themes.

So real adults only play games that are suitable for children? Does that mean someone is a bad parent if they play violent games or if they watch game of thrones?

As a parent, I can tell you I don't play games like Bayonets and The Last of Us in front of my children, nor do I watch Dexter and movies like Zack and Mire make a Porno (really great movie btw) I'm front of my kids. I in fact do not like that my ex wife has remarried to a man who has played Call of Duty zombie mode in front of my kids and they are both obsessed with zombies and blowing them up. They are two and four btw. So, yes I think that was irresponsible on their part to introduce our children to that type of game.

Now, other parents can do what they feel is right with their children.

I think I just found some respect for you. Good man. A lot of parents are painfully lazy at keeping an eye on what their children are exposed to. Thank you for being a responsible parent.

^_^

Thank you, my friend. I try my best with my kids, and they mean everything to me. I can only hope they grow up to be better than myself. But, every good parent wishes that for their kids.
