I've tried persuading my friends to buy a Wii U, but they aren't prepared to buy a console which won't be used much by them.

A great way to get friends really interested is to invite them over to play.
Nintendoland is some of the most fun I've ever had gaming with other people. My two adult sons both want a a Wii U, just from playing Nintendoland. ....
My phone rang just now while I'm typing this reply. It's my eldest son "Hey dad, wanna come over for a beer? Bring the game(wii u) with you too".
It may be a while before he gets his own system if I keep taking him my one.
