French E3 interview of Nintendo's product manager (Translated)

I think this Nintendo guy did let go of some exclusive pieces of info during this interview, thought I'd share with you guys :)
 
Here is the original video (total bia*** to download, couldn't sub it).
 
I did the translation very late at night, don't hesitate to ask if anything seems odd.

 

 

G:Hey all, welcome on the Nintendo booth, I am now with Najib Messaoudi, product manager at Nintendo. How are you?
 
N: Very well thanks.
 
G: So, a few hours ago now, we've had a chance to discover Nintendo's digital event that revealed upcoming games for Wii U and 3DS. 
My first question is about the very nature of this digital event, why make an online video and not a conference like your competitors?
 
N: Well, to separate ourselves from the pack for one thing and also because we think this is best our viewers around the world. 
A conference may make a stronger impression on the E3 public but for the large majority that's not with us in LA, we think communication is more efficient with a video. 
By the bye, the internet feedback is rather positive and we pay attention to that.
 
G: It's true, we noticed it, you guys (the viewers), were extraordinarily numerous to comment the event on Twitter.
Among other things, we finally got to see the NFC figures, or should I say NFP at Nintendo, can you tell us more on the way these are gonna work?
 
N: Yes, we've shown the figures for the first time, ten of them are gonna come out at first, most of them from the Mario Universe. They will come out with Smash Bros for the Wii U.
 
G: When exactly?
 
N: At the end of the year.
 
G: 2014?
 
N: Yes, 2014 for sure.
Smash Bros for 3DS will come out on October 3rd, you can announce this date, but the WiiU version will come out a bit later at an unknown date.
The most attractive feature of these figures that interact with the Wii U gamepad is that you will be able to use the same figure in different games. So a figure will send and retrieve data in Smash Bros. but also in MK8 for example.
That means MK8 is likely to evolve though updates.
 
G: You mean Nintendo is planning on updating several existing games to use the NFC technology?
 
N: Yes exactly.
 
G: What's interesting is also the link with Disney Infinity and Skylanders, indeed their figures make use of some parts of the Nintendo NFC technology, right?
 
N: Exactly, their figures are already compatible, so this is great for 3rd party editors.
 
G: What does that mean? Do you have more things to offer to people who play Disney Infinity and Skylanders?
 
N: For one thing you will be able to use a single figure for different games. That's all I can say for now.
As for content, it will depend on the games and the editors. What I can say is that the figures both send and receive data.
Data will differ depending on the games.
 
G: How will these figures be sold? Will they be bundled with games?
 
N: We haven't made plans for bundles yet, for now they are to be  sold independantly.
 
G: Among the important announcements that we were longing for, Shigeru Myamoto has presented his new projects, can you tell us more about them?
 
N: There is Project guard, a very promising tower defense. It is only a project that could turn into a stand-alone game or could be part of a larger game as for example Starfox.
It makes intensive use of the gamepad, you will have to position 12 different cameras and control them. You could chose camera 8 and defend its zone. Other players can warn you and indicate endangered cameras. This is a really cool tower defense that lets the pressure escalate really fast.
 
G: So are these games or mere experiments?
 
N: These are game projects, that's how we see them for now, they will be finalized in 2015 and until then Mr. Myamoto will be free to decide of their fate.
 
G: Among the many MANY games you have revealed today, which one is the most interesting, or maybe the one that makes the best use of the gamepad?
 
N: I think Smash Bros. is gonna surprise many people and its even better than it looks. For me it's n°1.
There are others that I'm fond of, Bayonetta 2 is very promising especially since we will bundle it with the first episode.
Devil's 3rd has also looks like pure genius, à subtle mix of FPS elements and Ninja gaiden. You start with an FPS attack as you move forward and finish your ennemy with katana slashes.
Obviously Xenoblade Chronicle X is coming, or the Legend of Zelda that really looks fantastic.
 
G: Will we see many more games that make use of the gamepad exclusive features? They haven't been used much…
 
N: It depends on the games, actually we felt it didn't make much sense as a central element in MK8, but we offered off-TV possibilities nonetheless, that are in my opinion the main feature of the gamepad.
Many other ongoing projects make interesting use of the gamepad, Mr Myamoto's projects for example, make use of gameplay mechanics that are only possible on the Wii U gamepad.
These projects rely enormously on the gamepad, but we also have Hyrule Warriors that allows local multiplayer gaming without split screens.
Mario Party also allows players to control Bowser independantly against four other players.
Loads of asymetric gameplay is coming, NFC is coming , the gamepad is very much alive and the center of our attention. 
 
G: The digital event put the highlight on the Wii U, what about the 3DS?
 
N: Indeed the highlight was on the Wii U. As you pointed out, we revealed a whole lot of games. New IP like Captain Toad, splatoon and Devil's third get the Wii U a lot of attention but we also have games coming for the 3DS such as MH4, (hesitating) Smash Bros., (Trying to think of something) we also focus on japanese games that are not yet out in France like Fantasy life, or Shin megami Tensei.
Also if you look back, Tomodachi just came out, Bravely default, Fire Emblem, there are many games to play on the 3DS.
 
G: This E3 really gives the feeling that Nintendo is finally coming into its own, indeed you've announced a whole lot of games for the Wii U but why such a slow start compared to the one of the original Wii?
 
N: I think the typical Wii U Gameplay is more complex than motion gaming that anybody can get the hang of in 10 sec.
Also, our communication wasn't optimal from the start, people thought the Wii U was just a new accessory for the Wii.
For the hardcore gamers though, the difference is obvious and they know the Wii U is far superior both from a technical POV and a Gameplay POV.
 
G: So the Wii U is more Hardcore gamer oriented… but a key element is still missing, you have great games, big IP, and no 3rd party games, how do you plan on making them come back to you. Assassin's creed, Call of Duty are important stuff for hardcore gamers.
 
N: Well, most people have PCs to play these games, but 
we still count on 3rd party editors. We should lead the way and show that Wii U games sell well. We've done it well with Tropical Freeze, we've done it REALLY well with MK8.
We will keep demonstrating the Wii U's potential, 3rd party games will follow.
 
G: MK8 is a great success, both worldwide and in France specifically, as I understand it, the Wii U sales were multiplied by 10 those last weeks. Do you have more precise figures for us?
 
N: The console sales are up by 660% in France, I don't remember how many units were sold this week (yeah… right ^^) but I can tell you the Wii U wasn't the least sold console this week.
 
G: Which one would that be?
 
N: Can't tell you that, you have amazingly informed sources, ask them…
 
G: Blabla Pokemon center in France, blabla… (4:20am)
 
G: Like Nintendo did, I will conclude this interview on Zelda.
We'd been expecting a new Zelda for a very long time, it is THE game everyone wanted to see.
I was personnally blown away by the video intro, it's a great mix between mature Twilight Princess style and more artsy Skyward sword style, can you tell us more on the story?
For one thing, was that character Link?
 
N: The character that we saw? He's Link, normally he's Link, unless I'm wrong, but the info that I got says he's Link. 
For one thing, we got a glimpse of what I hope is Epona, it may be another horse but I think it's Epona, what I can tell you is the world is gonna be a lot more open, rule-changingly, I think it's gonna be the most surprising Zelda in many years.
 
G: The last 3DS Zelda was very good, it innovated, letting you deal with the dungeons in any order, giving you access to all the in-game equipment from the start.
Will that idea be carried into this new Wii U episode?
 
N: You can expect the dugeons to be accessible in whatever order that you want, as for the in-game items, I can't tell as I have no info on that.
 
G: Ok then… 2015 means early 2015? Summer? Fall?
 
N: Before 2016
 
G: K thx bye

Interesting. I'm reminded of another interview that had some lost in translation and turned out to be crap, but this sounds pretty solid. Still holding out hope that totally isn't Link in the Zelda trailer. :P

Some people always have a cellphone on them. I'm so awesome I always have a 3DS.

Ugh. I was so fine with the interviewer until that question :/

 

Also LOL at the fact he seems to know as much about Zelda as we do "i think that was Link? And that was Epona... right? I hope it was Epona..."
