They're a real thing, and they're coming out soon-ish. They're not wireless, though, and instead will be going through a USB adapter.

It's not a rumor, it's been confirmed by Nintendo and it'll be released along side Smash Bros. It'll be wired controllers and they'll be several different kinds.
You can pre-order some at your local game specialists store, for example I live in the UK so I'll preorder

Pick up the pro. Previously released games don't support GCN controllers and won't work in VC for Wii U. Might in Wii mode in Wii mode, not sure.
Honestly Pro is one of the best controllers ever imo.

I have never played a Super Smash Bros game so I'm really looking forward to its release on the Wii U. Does the game really require that many buttons to play? It seems like such a simple game from the gameplay footage I have seen.

A company called PDP is making Gamecube controllers that plug into the Wiimote and act as a Classic Controller too so they will work with Virtual Console. They are teamed with Nintendo so I think they are gonna be same quality as the normal Nintendo ones. Thanks for the response guys! The wired aspect is a deal breaker for me though as wired controllers won't play well with my entertainment setup because they would be a tripping hazard. If they plugged into the Remote Plus controller the way the Nunchuk does then that would be doable but plugging in directly into the USB port is laughable at this day and age. It's really too bad because it's a cool looking controller.

Special thanks to Horchata. I appreciate it so much.
