So I had to buy a new Mario Kart 8 disc from Amazon since my first one went bad, and upon further inspection I had noticed that it has shiny spots on it on the label. Which seems to be the label with a few chips in it revealing the disc under it. Awhile back someone else posted a pic showing this problem as well on another forum. Mine are kinda like his.

So yeah should I contact Amazon and get a replacement? Or will it not hurt much?

Yes. Get a replacement. If it gets worse you risk the game not working.

If you see light holding it up to a lamp in those scratches then the disc maybe useless.

Yes the data is stored on sliver top layer.
If that part gets messed up its all over.
The bottom of the disc is the clear layer, it can get scratch to hell and then you can buff it out to be clear and readable again.

I have to correct you on this. The data is actually printed in the clear polycarbonate layer. The top aluminum layer is there to reflect the laser (the artwork is printed on another layer on top of that), so if it's missing in spots, the laser goes through and the drive can't read the disc.

 

The reason the disc can get scratched and still be read is because the data is not located in the very surface of the polymer.

yes you are correct.

I have just always went on it being that top layer but its the layer under that. The bottom is the clear part. You can see all the layers  on old disc

In a DVD the metal layer lies deep in the disc. So the paint chipping off from the label won't matter.

You're right, my bad. It's more like a BluRay, which means the information is stored closer to the bottom layer instead. (Which in turn means that it has protection on that side.) But it means that what happens to the top of it is even more irrelevant.
