I just got my WiiU and a few games, Super mario U, Super Luigi U and Mario cart 5. I don't really want to have to spend fifty bucks on the WiiU controller plus but am not comfortable playing on the game pad. I wanted to get the new WiiU fight pad controller but no one at Gamestop can give me a straight answer as to if it will work with Mario U. Does anyone have them both and. And try it for me?
Thank you!
All right, for New Super Mario Bros U, you can use the Gamepad, the Pro Controller, wiimote or the classic controller (pro or not). The "fight pad controller" is a classic controller pro designed as a Gamecube controller, so it should work with NSMBU. Just make sure you have a wiimote, since the classic controllers need to be plugged into one.
You might also want to consider a regular classic controller (same as the "fight pad", but a more conventional design):

I think you should be able to find one slightly cheaper than that though.

I don't think Mario Kart 5 is on Wii U, that was a DS game. Lol
Anyways, I think you should just stick it out for a while until you can get the Pro Controller. It's gonna be better than playing with a fight pad which I assume is like a arcade cabinet type of thing. Also remember that the Gamepad is mandatory for some parts in games like 3D World. If you have a Wii remote then you could use that in the meantime to play.
Special thanks to Horchata. I appreciate it so much.

Classic controller is one of my favorites, you should be good with that. To me it's much better than the Pro Controller.
Special thanks to Horchata. I appreciate it so much.

Pro is the way to go if you don't want to use gamepad.

It is odd to play on the gamepad while looking at the TV. Gonna take time to get used to

It takes a while to understand what the gamepad is all about. With it's screen you tend to want to look at it, even when you don't need or want too. After a while it will become just a normal controller in your hands and depending upon the game, you'll see the unique experience it can bring to gaming.

So the old classic controller for Wii does not work with Super Mario U. I gave up and bought a pro controller tonight, another fifty bucks, i need to be DONE spemding money on this!
At Wii u launch, pro controller was not supported but after super Luigi u was released there was an update allowing pro controller support. Super Mario 3d world has support for Wii classic controller.

That's actually true, sorry about that! I googled it and someone had written somewhere that it works. The classic controller works well with games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World. But now you have the pro controller so you won't need it.
