New year can never start in a better way than this. Nvidia revealing a brand new processor ; The octa -core Tegra X1. X1 will be the successor of the famous Tegra K1 and will have nearly double the performance of its predecessor. X1 will also be the first ever mobile processor to reach a computational power of a teraflop with a fraction of power of that of a core i7. The first processor to hit a Tera-flop did it back in 2000 and required nearly a million watts to do it.
The major feature of the X1 is that it has 256 Maxwell shader cores + it has CUDA support which makes it great for parallel computing and gaming. Nvidia is aiming that it's processor can leap over the Quallacoms upcoming snapdragon 810 performance both in terms of general and graphical computing.
Here are the specs of the X1:
265 Maxwell Shader Cores
8 CPU core( 4 cortex A57+4 Cortex A53)
60FPS 4K (H.265, H264, VP9)
support for 1.3 GigaPixel camera support
20nm Node
As indicated above, the Tegra X1 CPU will be based Big little architecture which means that 4 A57 cores will be used for intensive computing while 4 cortex A53 cores for light computing.
One of the big features of the X1 is its support for 60fps 4k Video at 60hz which means we can finally enjoy lag free experience when watching 4K .
One of the biggest features of the X1 is its power efficiency, its nearly double that of the K1 which can primarily be linked to the fact that it has a smaller node of 20nm compared to 28 nm of the K1. This means that we can finally see it on our smart phones.
It seems that mobile gaming is finally catching up with home consoles and in the next couple of years we might see our smart phones and tablets surpassing the graphical capabilities of our next gen consoles.
