Back in August I met with the CEO of Atari and in the middle of an interview he dropped some pretty ludicrous news on me—"You will hear a lot more about Asteroids in the next few weeks. It's a PC game. It's going to be a survival game on the asteroids."

Yes, Atari is indeed working on a reboot of a 30-plus year old arcade game where you play as a triangle. Or, actually, Atari is publishing said reboot. Today, we got the first official details on Asteroids: Outpost, "where players mine, build and defend their base and grow their fortune as they go 'from rocks to riches.'"

That pun came straight from the press release, I swear.

It sounds like your standard survival game: "While on a massive, unforgiving asteroid, players face the challenges of exploring the asteroid, collecting resources, scavenging for ore, crafting equipment, and expanding their territory as they build highly customized bases." Oh, except because it's Asteroids you'll also have to protect your base from asteroids raining out of the sky and demolishing your base.

Remember when Defender was rebooted on PS2 and Gamecube. No? How about Space Invaders on PS2..oh no? Ok then How about Final Fight on PS2...oh once again no. Centipede on Dreamcast?

Ah I bet you remember Bomberman on Xbox 360. Oh we try to forget that. This is what happens when you try attach a name to a game that has nothing to do with the original game and/or premise. Atari is dead. We don't need a followup to 40 year old game. It was simple and worked. A followup with updated visuals would work just fine as a steam game or indie game. This is a game using a name desperate for money.

Oh but it has crafting! You know the mini game mechanic that is used because of games embarassed to be video games but make a mini game making it MORE a video game thus contradicting it's purpose other than useless padding. Yeah mash up a bunch of modern popular crap mechanics mush it into one game give it a name we know and BAM profit..or so they hope.

I'd love a re-release of the original asteroids instead of this. I loved that game when I was a kid.
