Give a publisher an inch and they will try to take a mile. I think what I described is Nintendo not living in the past. People are still like Nintendo needs new ips but will overlook games like XCX and splatoon. The reality is people want Nintendo to be just like Sony and Microsoft. I took a lot of hate on this site from people because I said I wanted Nintendo to get GTAV. That wasnt because I was a big GTA fan. The reality is GTA is the biggest if not one of the biggest third party titles out there. It usually sell upward to twenty million copies per installment. I thought a well done GTA on Wii U launched beside the others could sell a million. Now the devide between Nintendo and third parties is too big. I am not sure what they have to do to ever be on top again but giving quality titles and partnering with studios for games like bayonetta and devils third can not be looked at as living in the past. Remember they is also the rumor from the guy that pretty much told us devils third was coming that they have three more partnerships like that in the works that havent been announced yet. Nintendo will IMO do a lot better next generation but some things like third parties will never be on the same level as sony or microsoft.
The reality is this: people like Nintendo games. But they also really like a lot of the third party offerings. Even the much maligned AAA titles. People are buying them because that's what they want. So make a machine that attracts the developers of those types of games. And in so doing, automatically giving Nintendo a better platform for their own games. No one is saying be the same as Sony and microsoft. But we are saying the policy of not even trying to compete is stupid. Not on,y can nintendo compete, they can win. They are the only gaming centric co panty between the three and are u i query positioned to ensure the success of their console standalone. It that success is limited when they go it alone. They need a steady flow of high quality 1st and 2nd party games as well as all of the third party offerings. In short, the one place anyone ever needs to go is Nintendo. Nintendo console at least as powerful as the competition, the stellar Nointendo game lineup, AAAAND the definitive versions of third party titles.
And stop, with the childish menu designs and sounds. The n64 wasn't like that. The gamecube wasn't like that. The SNES wasn't like that. Even the wii was actually cool looking for its time. The menus were Apple Mac inspired and looked very modern then.
But now, the UI is even less focused and borrows some of the same old design. But mixed with ther outdated elements that don't mesh well along with system sounds that can best be described as captain toad farting skittles out of his butt while jumping down a warp pipe.
That's great in a mario GAME or such. But not the entire ui.
Make it more neutral, allowing your experience to be defined by what games you Re playing and what apps you use. Nothing is more jarring than playing mass effect, arkham, or splinter cell, then jumping to the menu to watch a gritty movie on Netflix only to be greeted by happy skittle farts in between. In shorts, it's Annoying. No one wants to watch Giardians of the Galaxy on a Leapster right? So don't make the console sound like one. Something that could be at home on a child's room , a college dorm, as well as showing off your latest YouTube video to your upscale freinds at an oscars after party. And can be proud about it.
And when it comes to games, having the best audio visual experience never hurt anyone. In fact, this lone aspect is selling consoles for Sony quite well these days. Not saying Nintendo should be Sony. Quite the contrary. But the market is different than it was in the wii days and that won't change for quite some time.
