Would be interesting, but concerning. I question the stability of using a fork of Android. As a blackberry fan I'm hoping it will be a fork of BlackBerry 10, as the RTOS QNX core would work great as a highly stable gaming OS, and it already has pretty good Android support while still being able to conform to Nintendo's anti piracy and stability demands.

NEVER knew there was another blackberry fan on this forum. Yes QNX is amazing but them doing anything with blackberry the name alone would kill them. Nintendo needs western audience the most and blackberry is dead in the west.  Was talking earlier with Ryudo and I agree if it is android it would be something super customized for them. Not just the base android OS as that is very open source and piracy would be a BIG issue. Nintendo is smarter than that. BTW I am rocking the passport.

If true then anyone with a smart phone can play all of its games I would imagine. Great stuff. Not.

Honestly, I don't think Blackberry marring Nintendo's name would be an issue. It wouldn't be running Blackberry 10, but the QNX kernel and Android runtime (at minimum). QNX is already a pretty flexible OS that runs on virtually everything, and Nintendo would simply need to get the Android VM on it and then they would just do the same amount of customizing as they would need to do for any other OS (hardware optimization, Nintendo specific APIs and services). Hell, the BBM system would add really good reliability to online gaming and BES can be made into a parental controls system.

 

And I'm rocking the Z30, which I got on sale for $300.

BASED is a key word. Wii U discs are Blu Ray BASED. Pannasonic developed them as they did Blu Ray. So could be similar or even if it is android it will likely heavily custom. Amazon does for Kindle.

"Based" is not in the original translation. It seems to be indicated that the original article (a Japanese business site) says it actually IS Android, and we don't know if that means that or if a derivative of Android or simply "Android game compatible." It would really suck if it was actually Android (and seems implausible, at least to me) so a port - or a different OS with an Android compatibility layer - seems more likely.

Probably not.

Just means it runs a version of Android, could even just be Nintendo making an OS easier by using Android coz it already exists. I doubt you'll be playing Nintendo games on Android, but it is possible...

 Aside from its codename, we know little about Nintendo's in-development "NX" console. Yesterday, however, Japanese publication Nikkei claimed to have hit upon a particularly juicy detail about the next-gen gaming system, with its sources stating the NX will run some form of Google's Android OS. The rumor wasn't exactly far-fetched, givenNintendo's plans to get into mobile games this year; but alas, it appears to have been a blast of hot air. Today, a Nintendo spokesperson's commented on the hearsay -- or rather, shot it down in flames -- declaring "There is no truth to the report saying that we are planning to adopt Android for NX." Denials don't get much clearer than that, but hopefully whatever platform Nintendo's outfitting the NX with will be less Wii

Aside from Nintendo not having proper control over their OS? Android would more or less have to be heavily modified to work with gaming hardware and have any control over the software. Android by nature is a partially open hodge-podge of code, which conflicts with Nintendo's 20+ year stance of having a very tight control of what their consoles run and how well it works. Nintendo is simply better off working from a very stable OS core (Like BeOS or QNX) then add needed features instead of taking a OS specific to phones and stripping out everything unwanted. Like it or not Nintendo has no intention of waking up one day and finding that people can root their consoles and pirate their games willy-nilly, OR have to deal with an OS that does not prioritize game processing over random background tasks.
