Alex Hutchinson, the creative director for Assassin’s Creed 3 has shared that the combat system within the game is “completely redone”. The biggest change is the introduction of the two-handed combat system. This allows Connor – the protagonist – to use weapons such as the bow, but also to dual-wield weapons. It’s now possible to hold a tomahawk and a knife at the same time, for instance. As for why bows are still used when, historically, guns had taken over:
…a lot of the different tribes were still using them to hunt from horseback because the guns were so inaccurate. We thought it was a cool weapon, and still historically accurate.
And gameplay-wise, bows are more fun than guns anyway. But I’m mostly curious to see the dual-wielding in action, which I suspect they’ll show off in depth during E3 2012.
