Remember that IGN is wrong often and could be likened to the National Enquirer tabloid magazine, but for the video game industry.
They're hit or miss. Don't take their articles too seriously.

Thanks for the clarification. On a side note, why are people bashing IGN? You guys do realize that gonintendo also reported on the story. Most, if not all gaming websites, report on rumors. I do agree that IGN is rather bias when it comes to reviews, but because they report on stories like these, you can't simply deem them inaccurate or unreliable.http://www.freepaten...20120115595.pdf
The patent is from this document. The document was published a couple of days ago, but as numerous people already have pointed out, the patent itself is likely an old one. Analog sticks are still a possibility though.
EDIT: Document was filed by Nintendo October 2011, which of course was after the Wii U's first reveal. So I guess...?

Do this if you have a PS3 controller at hand. How will that work for a third person uncharted-like game? Like, when you need to use the face buttons, you will need to move your entire hand and slide it down to reach?
Since the circle pad is above the face buttons on the Wii U controller, you want to have your thumb at say Triangle as the resting point (or in the Wii U's case, the circle pad). Then, move just your thumb down to say X. It's not that very different.
In the FPS example, you'll spend more time twiddling with the camera as opposed to face buttons, so having your thumb in a much more natural position for the most part seems like an ergonomic move by Nintendo.
Of course, in this patent, it's way too far down for this.
lolwut.
An actual serious post from Megadriven Coffee.
Embrace this once in a lifetime event!

You may be right but the Wii U controller isnt that big. I dont think it would require to move the whole hand to get to the buttons. There is no grip to hold the controller and the face buttons are right below the right analog stick? How will that work for a third person uncharted-like game? Like, when you need to use the face buttons, you will need to move your entire hand and slide it down to reach? Whereas the PS3 controller or 360 controller you just need to move your thumb. This wii u design is the best http://www.megapirat...r-featured.html it just needed triggers. They need to be offset.
And yes, this is an old patent filed in october but published now.
If IGN is inaccurate, then how is GameSpot. They're the one that gave Skyward Sword a 7.5...Thanks for the clarification. On a side note, why are people bashing IGN? I looks less appealing in general shape now.
Yes ... i really hope Im not wrong on this one and it's just an image mixup rather than going with this design, well the E3 one didn't look anything like this i hope they just improve on the design instead of making it like a freaking 80' tv remote from sci-fi or something.
