IGN says Nintendo sacrificed E3 for stockholders

“Nintendo hasn’t left behind its fans, but it has decided to open new channels of communication that enable the company to make announcements on its own strictly controlled terms. This is a case of the company marching defiantly to its own tune, and refusing to have its news agenda dictated by large-scale American events.
It’s difficult not to see the announcement of the 3DS XL, the 8-Bit Summer and the Smash Bros details literally weeks after E3 as a bit of a middle finger to anyone expecting big announcements at the show– and, more importantly, to E3 itself.”
So to sum it up Nintendo only showed launch games to please stockholders, Nintendo's other plan is to have news keep coming through Nintendo Direct and Nintendo Fall Conference than just E3 - Fall conference.
Makes perfect sense and at least we can look forward towards better Wii U conferences in the near future.

Yeah, you've done a great job so far, letting the Metal Heads destroy the palace.

So Nintendo Fall Conference confirmed?
actually, what kind of conferences could be held before release... assuming the release is a bit before black friday (the most obvious right now)
Yep, the Nintendo Fall Conference is in September, usually right before TGS which they call they're conference Pre-TGS even though they aren't going to TGS, at the conference they will announce future Wii U games, Nintendo Network, Virtual Console, eShop, etc.
I could actully see them talking about Virtual console and eShop releated news at Nintendo Direct in August.

Just about everyone's stock fell at E3, I think that happens every E3.Didn't Nintendo's stock ultimately end up dropping anyway post E3?

Gee, you wonder why stockholders even claim shares on the companies to begin with.
Yeah stockholders don't seem like the most clever or patient of people, like that one guy who said the only reason he had stock was because the liked their name.
I also think I heard a story after this E3 where the stockholders said that nintendo was making a current gen system and Iwata fired back with third parties are not even using half the systems power.
So Wii U more than half current gen power confirmed.
