A new console, codenamed “Ouya” is in development by a new company. The current design, shown above, is similar to the GameCube, but based on the early information, there’s a few interesting tidbits that make this worth paying attention to. First, the console is set to be $99 and will be “hackable”, meaning if you have development skills, you can change the operating system (considering it’s running on Android) and all the other underlying software on the hardware.
There’s also a lot of interesting people involved, including Yves Behar – a renowned designer who worked on the Jambox and One Laptop Per Child – and also staff from Peek, Color, and IGN. For the moment, it’s early days, but it’s always nice to have a new competitor.
