Hey guys, I was thinking of getting a couple 64 gig class 10 sd cards for my Wii U since it has 2 slots for em. I was just wondering if these can be used just like an external hard drive. Basically will I be able to play downloadable games off these cards (Like Trine 2).

Also the Xbox 360 I know gives you the option of installing games to your hard drive so they load faster, is this available on the Wii U. If so can I use the sd cards?

I know these are specific questions but I'm just thinking of my options :P

It's not really confirmed yet...Well I think. But you could obviously save data from your games when you start the games.

Well like DLC and smaller downloadable games and stuff. Not just save game files.

we dont know what amount of memory is inside, but it is should be able to contain games to play instead of sd/external drives

Oh? I thought it was mentioned there woud be 8gb. Enough for saves and little things but not tons of stuff. I know Nintendo said that there wouldn't be a big hardrive because they expect people to buy their own to keep console costs down.

Wii u sounds quite flexible in the way it works. Not only does it have its own 8GB of flash memory, you can use sdcards and usb memory devices be they flash memory or hard drives. Nintendo want people to start buying downloadable games and other content and its not in their interests to restrict people from adding extra memory.

Yes.
In all the official notes Nintendo have published they lump USB hard drive and SD card in the same sentence.
SDHC will be supported, so your class 10 64GB cards would work.

I doubt that. The 3DS can handle a 32GB SD card at max. Being a more powerful console, the Wii U will likely support 32GB, if not more than that.

I hope 64. There's also 128 gigs coming out and I'd like to get those once the price drops a bit.

Well, if Wii U formats the SD card in fat32 then you're screwed. Fat32 doesn't allow for files over 4gb. You can still stack up a lot of files until it's 64gb but the max size per file is around 4gb. And some wii u games might even be 25gb.

Or more, because Wii U supposedly can support dual or even triple layered discs to allow 50 or 75 GB of data.

I really hope games can be played right off the SD Card and/ or the USB drive. That was a big problem for the Wii as some games were large in size. Nintendo also needs to remove something, on the Wii if a game had online ( Ex. Brawl, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, etc) it could not be copied or transferred to the SD card because Nintendo was afraid of hackers, this sucked as most of the online games took up big chunks of space in the consoles memory. This can't be in the Wii U since games will be larger and it would become even more of a problem.
