practically already known over 2 years ago by a close reporter running www.phoronix.com/
valve has officially opened up a blog about steam for linux at http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/linux/

shown to be already running native are the client and source engine for games like left for dead 2
in order to reach the goal to get the game running to linux standards, valve has gone so far to patch and fix part of the linux kernel, now thats some dedication

alongside this, hidden in the osx version of games lately updated are bits of code telling the game to run in "linux" mode, these are found in several popular source games like portal2 and teamfortress2

also rumored by a fan email, and not very suprising, steam for linux will be available before the end of the year

YAY

No they haven't.
They've just tested it, and L4D2 is working on it.

L4D2 is important because that game is as far as Valve plan to bring the Source engine, according to them a few years back.
So it should be a less-hard task to port the rest of Valve's games.

This is pretty exciting. Although we likely won't see the Linux version of the Steam client for a while, it's great to hear that Valve are actively working on porting it and the Source engine over. I have been considering a switch to Linux for some time; and although I'm aware that the vast majority of Steam's library won't be playable at launch, having the framework in place for Linux software delivery opens the door for developers to port their efforts over as well.

Sorry for being the clueless guy here but, what is Linux exactly? Is it an operating system like PC or Mac?

Yes, it's an operating system.
It's a derivative of the basis to mac,
They're like first cousins.

it is an open-source (as in you can take the code and poot on it) kernel that what in the linux world we call distributions are made with

the biggest and (personally) best right now is ubuntu, as it is half ran by a company almost entirely off of donations, making it (and practially every other distribution) free

personally the best thing about linux is you can do whatever you want with it, think of windows, you only got one desktop, you dont want to know how many desktops you can download in linux distributions

for how little its used, its actually quite amazing, and is nearly identically smooth as windows engine, the problem is its not supported, your games and graphics drivers are mostly meant for windows, not linux, so you run into problems

but by having steam run on linux, hopefully this can cause a cascade where other gaming companies, etc. realize that theres a hungery crowd of linux users that will quite literally puke money at whather company says linux first, valves just reading the obvious inscriptions on the wall.

Wow, so now Mac users don't have to feel like they're the ones getting shafted. Mac and PC users can laugh at Linux users together :P
No offense to Linux users, its a great operating system, but it tends to have compatibility issues, unless you use Wine.

You talking about KDE, Gnome, blah blah blah, ... ?
ubuntu's only so popular because it's based on debian. :P And they made the interface pretty so Windows users would be less scared when making the change.

It's an operating system but PC and Mac aren't. :P

Best thing is that it's free.
