Adam Sessler, the former co-host of X-Play, has shared on Twitter that he is “confident” that the Wii U will “not come out this year” and will “not provide the needed stimulation to the industry”. The last point feels pointless to comment on for the moment. Whether or not Wii U will “stimulate” the industry — or if that should even be the responsibility of a single platform — could be debated until the end of time.

As for the Wii U not coming out this year though, that just feels like a strange belief to hold. Everything is pointing toward a release in 2012. Aside from Nintendo just flat-out saying it’s coming this year, there’s also the fact that:

  • Marketing materials have appeared at offline retailers.
  • Online retailers have started to list the console for preorder.
  • Numerous media outlets have shared expected release dates from trusted sources.
  • Multiple publishers have accidentally hinted at the Wii U’s release date.
  • The timing of the media briefing makes sense for a September announcement, then November release.

Yes, there could be a delay. But to me, nothing in particular points to one. I’d be extremely surprised if the Wii U is not in our hands before the end of 2012.
