This is for all you hard drive nerds! I am more likely going to grab an 8gig Wii U at some point, however; I'd like to grab a decently-sized HDD so that both my laptop and Wii U can benefit from (so that I get more bang for my buck instead of just buying a 32gig Wii U), but I need some spending advice for someone on a budget. I don't need a Terabyte; I am not too much a pack rat, but I would like to invest in digital gaming.

What HDD do I suggest I purchase would a good amount of size for a good price? Thanks.

Best thing if your not getting ASAP would be to check out TigerDirect or NewEgg on a weekly basis. They almost always have a great deal with free shipping. Smallest you can really get now a days are 50Ogb and will run you 50-70 bucks on sale. Stick with Seagate or Western Digital. I know ou said you dont need a 1tb drive...but honestly they are so cheap now its the best bang for your buck.

Agreed, 1TB now really are "best bang for your buck" especially since you can split that to 500 for both your PC and console. If you decide to game digitally on both it might be a good idea.
I personally use NewEgg.
1TB Seagate for $90. ... same price as this 750GB Seagate.
$60 for 500GB Seagate

I'd just go with the 1TB.

Also be careful with using it for both your Laptop and PC because the Wii U will probably format the HDD into some weird way that a PC can't read. So if you are planning on buying one for both, you may have to think about a different option.

Be wary, the suck is coming.

Usb 3.0 isn't the Wii U using Usb 2.0? would it still fit :P

Haha maybe I should actually put my gender on my profile...
Anyways, I've never heard of a console doing the formatting? You should be able to partition the drive so that your PCs and Wii U each only see a different single 500GB partition.

Usb 3.0 isn't the Wii U using Usb 2.0? would it still fit :P

Yeah it will work, just only have 2.0 speeds.

It'll either use ntfs or fat32.
The Nintendo/Wii U stuff will be encrypted though, obviously.
Just like the SD cards for the past 9001 years in Nintendo consoles.

Seagate/samsung are the best manufacturers in my opinion, and they're now the same company so...
Western Digital are alright, they're usually cheaper, but in my experience they die easier on fumbles/drops. Considering you'll be moving it a bit, I don't think it's worth the risk.

All 3.5 inch external hard drives need to be plugged into the wall as well as USB, 2.5 is so much better in that regard, but you pay a bit more for it.

Like I said, not a pack rat. I don't need 500gb! But thanks for suggesting Newegg! I will look around and see what I can find!

I know you said not a packrat but I find once you get more space to work with you start downloading more. Happy to help though. :P I'd really recommend at least getting a 500GB to split 250 each way. It sounds like more than it is. At least for someone like me who downloads a lot of media heh.

Well I've been a PC gamer for a long time, and I usually do not play too many computer games at once, so space wasn't an issue. The Wii U is bringing me back to consoles, and I've never owned a console that was able to download mother titles, so I don't know what it is going to be like as far as space. I imagined that only a few would be digital, so I need not extreme amounts of memory, but I know I will invest in indie games, but they are always miniscule in filesize compared to retail titles.

I hate having too much stuff. It's an OCD of mine. I am more worried about quality over quantity as far as game downloads. I am more likely to have big games than small. I don't want to spend too much on memory I won't use, because I pay bills with mediocre income, so it is really a budget thing.

I wish I was a kid again!

When it comes to storage options, I like to think of it like this.

You want a new place to live. You either pick:

A. the small apartment for less money because you don't have much stuff, but if you end up getting more stuff you will need to move to a bigger place.

B. the nice big place for a bit more money so you have room for more stuff later on if you choose to get more. but if not at least you still have the option.

If you choose option A, you could essentially be spending more than option B if you choose to upgrade later on.
